BR swaybar and hardware
Finished the Baja Ron bar today in my '22 F3 Special after waiting a few days for the specific hardware to finish the job, here's the long story;
I owned a '20 Ryker rally that had jittery steering above 50mph, I had read about it and sure enough it was true. I didn't jump in to the whole bar and link change but did just the links first, a set of spyder extras links, nice enough and easy enough to swap out. What I learned however was how sloppy the original hardware was when I removed it and the original links were not simply plastic but nylon reinforced. I did the complete replacement and boom, just like that, 90% of the jitters were gone, great but the hardware was bothering me. When I had time I went back and swapped everything back to original and took a ride, yeah, jitters returned. I then carefully measured everything and planned and ordered everything that would fit snug. Frame attachment was 1/4in as was the bar end but the balls in the links were closer to 6mm and so was the hardware. To make that matter worse the shoulders didn't pass completely through the frame or bar. The first thing I did was to get the 6mm bolts with the correct shoulder and I installed them with the original links and boom, 90% jitter reduction but I wasn't satisfied. I ordered 1/4in heim joints with an adjuster and the proper shoulder length and the steering/tracking was now rock solid.
Fast forward, I now own a spyder and while the tracking had only a fraction of the jitters the ryker had, it was still there so when I decided to do the bar upgrade I knew what to do. I got the hardware and did that too but I kept the original 8mm in the upper frame but actually wrapped the bolt with aluminum tape to snug them up (yeah, there was that much play in them) and slid a thin fiber washer in there to take up some slack. Down below I got a pair of 8mm stainless 30mm shoulder bolts and used 2 thin stainless washers, this bolt takes a 6mm nylon insert nut to finish, tightened up to torque specs and took a short winter ride and wow, what a difference, awesome.
