There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Spyder on fire

Fire

OMG :yikes:I'm glad you didn't get hurt luckily you put it out quickly that could provide some valuable answers that could help us all out. Keep us posted

Hi guys jaanpla, is right this is what we're are thinking just still no hard evidence its seem to be the only thing we can all figure out........going to be staying on this till we know for sure, but yes repairs are all on order, and it will be under way.....there's really not much to go off of small fire in a enclosed area?????? as we all know fumes are worse than gases.....so for now this is the verdict........my suggestion, and again this is my suggestion rather than everyone trying to remove the charcoal canister.....which i can't tell you to do, is to extend the vent line hose off of it and make it go out the bottom or further back on your bike simple easy fix, but again this is not a have to case, just a peace of mind suggestion from me personally. Any questions feel free to call or pm me I would be happy to talk more My Cell is 314 623 4743 call any time....except for SpyderGene, you are on the no call list:joke::joke::joke: lol

Was this included as part of the second update if a Spyder owner took it back to the dealership?

Yes it was. So a large number of Spyders have probably been altered and thus the marked reduction in fires.

Do I remember right that this particular Spyder had not had that done?:dontknow:

That we can find......no:shocked:.....All the budds updates say nothing about this that we can findnojoke Also removing the driver side splash panel on the bottom side of the motor can help move some stail air out also allows the motor to run a shade cooler....but more than likely you wont see bars diffrent on your gauges.....keep in mind we are still working with brp on this at the present time!:chat: lots to go over.....this is happing to only a very few bikes so its harder to figur out but it does need to be! venting and air flow make all the diffrence here that we can tell so far.....wish we had a major breakthrew but, i think right now most of you already have it somewhat figured out.........keeping you all updated!

Yes that is right, according to Len. When I had initially brought my Spyder to Cowtown for a bad oil pressure switch (a week after I bought it) I am pretty sure Dan told me that they did 5 updates to the bike. Now me not being mechanically inclined as to how these bikes work I am guessing now that since Len said the second update wasn't done that the 5 updates I was told about had to do with other stuff. I know I read somewhere that there was one for the DPS and some for other things. Maybe that's what was done at the initial visit of my Spyder to Cowtown.

In any case, I am just very glad and thankful that Cowtown is the place that's going to be fixing my Spyder. I feel I can easily trust riding it again since they will be the ones working on it but just to be extra safe from now on no more pulling right into the garage after riding. From now on it's going to get a mandatory cool down time outside. I would much rather have my Spyder turn to ashes than my house :D

Also wanted to add that I contacted the guy I bought my Spyder from to let him know what happened and I asked if any updates were done when he had the bike. He said that no updates were done because since it was working fine for him that he didn't want to bring it in and possibly then have something go bad. Much like the saying "if it isn't broke don't fix it" I guess and to a point that does make sense.

To clear some of this up as far as we can find going back on this model it does not have any updates for the canister vent line......went back with my service man and pulled it all up......There are several updates for this bike, we did all the updates the computer showed to do.....but the vent line is not in buds to be done.......I do think its agood idea at this point but is only my opionon and not a factory update that we can find so far.....if anything changes we will make note, but at this point there is nothing in the computer saying to do this:dontknow:

Exactly why I am happy Cowtown is working on my bike. They are really on it!! :2thumbs:

Len, at the very least I owe you guys lunch when you tell me to come in and pick up my ryde :D

Ok, so it's 90% sure that the canister is the fuel source.....what ignited it.....a blown exhaust gasket?

I was up to Cowtown yesturday and the Insurance claim is still in the process.. I once again saw the outcome of the fire.. I'm not sure if we will every know what actually started the fire, I suppose it could have been a blown gasket, any type of spark with-in the engine compartment could have started it, I'm sure we will all agree to that, possible the plug wire could have also had some type of short in it and just as Joe turn the key to shut it done it arked off the engine, again Len is on it and will need a bit more time I'm sure... I can tell you this though, I was parked right beside him and had shut mine off already and walking away from it when I heard Joe shut it off,, there was a CLOUD of WHITE smoke that smoothered the intire bike followed by flames that was coming out of the Right side panels (as you sit on the spyder).. Thats all I can really tell, Len's report along with BRP's input can hopefully find the cause of the fire but again, its to early to actually tell and we may never actually really know what started it..

X-Joe

Pretty sure I remember in one of the updates that changed the cycling of the vent solenoid that BRP added a longer hose to the cannister that went forward and exited thru the splash plate behind the radiator on the right.

But I guess it could have just been one of our members that did that for his own reasons.

My wife keeps saying I have something called "Old Timers Disease" and I misremember stuff all the time. :shemademe_smilie:

Here's the update INCLUDING a new vent hose:

This was no were in the buds up dates.....this should not be listed as a if its surging iteam upgade, but a safty upgrade item.....:dontknow:

:dontknow:
Just my thoughts but if they listed it as a Safety up grade, then they would have to have a Recall!
It's Cheaper [for them] to play the odds.

Thanks for the link we have coppied it and are sending it to our brp contact. This was no were in the buds up dates.....this should not be listed as a if its surging iteam upgade, but a safty upgrade item.....:dontknow:

Well, yeah.......now we know that.
But at the time it was a surging problem that the update was supposed to fix.
I think that they added the extra length of hose because of either the gas smell problem or (cynically) they suspected the fire problem was related to the cannister and snuck in a fix.

"Please note that these updates are not necessary if you have not noticed changes in the performance of your roadster since the DPS safety recall was performed."

I really wonder about this statement.

That canister is just a fume leaking bomb ready to go off--- just needs a spark... and I wonder if the spark isn't coming from the purge solenoid itself.

This also seems to happen once the heat really kicks up.

Where there's fumes--- there's strong potential for FIRE.

I know Len and others can't really come right out and tell people to yank those canisters---- but I can---- YANK EM!

I'd love to see one of our vendors out here sell a kit for people to make it simple. Couple feet of hose, some clamps, a fuel filter and some zip ties....
