Spyder on fire

 This new owner just wants to hear if there is a commonality among the fires. One problem BMW had for a few years was the use of plastic quick disconnects in the fuel lines. They failed all too frequently and were eventually replaced with metal ones. Are there any quick disconnects in the fuel lines of a Spyder?
See pic 1

For permanent solutions I could see several possibilities. Remove the charcoal cannister (EPA would not approve), move the charcoal cannister away from possible sources of ignition (could be expensive), move the exhaust pipe to a different location ( again expensive)and I would like not to see all these fuel joints directly above hot and possibly leaking exhaust.
.

Many of us did the canisterectomy last year. I believe the canister is only required in California. BRP makes a 50 State bike. I have been running without the canister and there have been no problems. I sleep better at night without it.

Something else that will help lower the temperatures in that particular area is double wrap that back exhaust header. This also reduces the heat on the insulating material on the front of the gas tank.

I doubled wrapped both exhaust pipes on ours and you won't believe the temperature difference just sitting at red lights or stop signs. The DEI 2 inch wrap works great. It is a pain to wrap the back cylinder pipe but well worth the effort.

As a matter of safety if you haven't changed to the worm screw clamps especially on the fuel lines I'd consider it. Ken krb1945

Questions.

Did this get reported to BRP as of yet?

Did this get reported to the NHTSA yet and is it going to be?

:agree:

:cus: the Canister!

Glad I've had mine yanked..... very interested to see the pics of the burnt parts on this Spyder.

Really only two choices of where the fuel for the fire came from---- a line that carries fuel--- or that :cus: Canister.

------------------

Someone mentioned areas of the Spyder hitting 1000 degrees under the hood? Really? That sure seems high.... I was thinking more in the 500 range. What areas are getting that hot?

Yikes, I might have just dodged a bullet! A couple days ago, I backed the Spyder out and noticed a few droplets on the floor. I looked underneath and saw liquid dripping from underneath. A quick sniff id'd it as gasoline. I pulled the right side panel and gas was running off the cannister. The hose connections seemed good. Suffice it to say, the cannister is now gone and the vent is routed back and off the left side. (Don't know why they would ever route the vent that was on the cannister directly under front end of the motor.) I can't see any cracks in the cannister that explain exactly where the gas was coming from... but I can say that it is not happening any more.

An e-mail has been sent to Carlo, or at least to what I believe is Carlo's e-mail anyway. I want to see first what Carlo will say, if anything then the next step is to report it to the NHSTA (or NHTSA, whichever it is). I don't expect a reply from Carlo at least until Wed. since they won't be back in 'til Tue. and figured with tech support being out for the last 2 weeks that he will be too swamped to reply on Tue. I would like to think though that seeing as how Carlo seems to get really good praises for the work he does that he does in fact give my e-mail some of his time and that he actually replies to me. I will update you all when and if he does.

As for my ryde, I should get a call from the insurance adjuster tomorrow then likely they will take a look at it on Tue.

I also finally found the cable to my phone. I only took 3 pics since I was busy working the phone with the insurance, roadside provider and tow truck company. The pics should show most of what was fried, melted and charred.

EDIT Hmm, seems my phone stored some of the pics upside down. At least it looks that way anyway.

Doesn't matter what Carlo says... You need to report it to the NHTSA.

Yes, this much I do know. I am just giving him the courtesy of a chance to reply to my mail. I had already planned on reporting it so timing or the lack thereof I don't think would really matter seeing as how I am only talking a few days here.

Thanks Spyryder for the help on that! :D As I am sure you all can tell already but in the two pics of the wiring and stuff you can clearly see the missing extension on the tube coming from the charcoal cannister that Mo Lee was talking about.

I turned 'em right side up for ya.;)

I can't see a hose clamp on the righthand side of the fuel filter.....

But liquid gas leaking down there really shouldn't ignite...Can't tell you how many times I've spilled gas on a hot exhaust by accident-- never had it ignite. I'm still thinking fumes from that stupid canister-- and then a spark from something-- like the purge valve solenoid....

Don't like their setup in that area at all.

I believe all vehicle fires have to be reported... seems I remember reading that somewhere last year.... not positive though.

Did you have the 'Second' update done?

I am not 100% positive as well but again I will repeat myself, I am reporting this issue. While many may not agree with me on waiting a day or two, again it is because I want to give Carlo the courtesy of having a chance to reply to my e-mail before I do. Call it wrong or whatever, it's just the way I am. It's not like BRP is going to hand me keys to a brand new Spyder free of charge, again it's just me extending him a little courtesy.

As for the second update I will be honest, I am sure they were done and I say that because I bought the Spyder used just a month ago. I did have it at Cowtown only days after I got it for an oil pressure switch that had gone bad and I was told they did all the updates at that time. I was told that 5 total updates were done and I trust them enough that when they say they did it, then it was done.

Don't expect too much from Carlo. BRP treated the fires last year with mostly silence. They will acknowledge that you had a fire and that's about it. Carlo told me that they had studied the fires and then closed the book. They never told us what they found. They just sort of skated by this issue and got away with it because there were only eight fires that we know of. There have been two more this year. BRP never saw my bike after the fire. It went straight to the salvage yard. There was no interest in seeing it. The two updates speak louder than words.

Do the canisterectomy. It will remove one of the risk factors.
