Spyder on fire

"Please note that these updates are not necessary if you have not noticed changes in the performance of your roadster since the DPS safety recall was performed."

I really wonder about this statement.

That canister is just a fume leaking bomb ready to go off--- just needs a spark... and I wonder if the spark isn't coming from the purge solenoid itself.

This also seems to happen once the heat really kicks up.

Where there's fumes--- there's strong potential for FIRE.

I know Len and others can't really come right out and tell people to yank those canisters---- but I can---- YANK EM!

I'd love to see one of our vendors out here sell a kit for people to make it simple. Couple feet of hose, some clamps, a fuel filter and some zip ties....

I agree, but no one ever will take that liability. They'd be crazy to. :yikes:

Emergency Kit for our rides

I like what Firefly had to say about a "kit"....was thinking the same thing yesterday. Hope this is on topic...I'm a newbie and having read most everything in the forums I started thinking about putting together an "Emergency/Spare parts" Kit to carry with me constantly. Is there anybody here that's compiled a list of the most common MINOR repairs that have been required on thier rides while traveling? I noticed that there are issues with replacement parts taking a long time because of customs issues. I'd like to put together such a kit which I think would include extra plugs, relays/fuses, gaskets, fire extinguisher, bulbs for signals/other lights, coolant, Fix-A-Flat. and of course a flashlight and the Almighty Duct Tape. I'd appreciate input regarding any other part(s) I should include in this kit that would cover most off-site repairs... 2 months of trouble free riding thus far (knocking on wood).

Nah, I am still here :D

I called Cowtown Yesterday and was told by Tom that the only thing not done is the DPS. This was an issue even before the fire, was just waiting on the unit to come in. Well it did but the way I understand it is the new DPS unit wasn't adjusting right, whatever that means. So now they are waiting on BRP to send a new one (2nd) is my guess.

I am going to call there this morning because if I am looking at waiting another month which is what it took BRP to send the first unit out then I am going to have them put the bike back together and just pick it up for now if at all possible. I rode it for about 3 weeks before the fire without DPS and actually got used to it anyway. When I took Len's demo bike home after the fire the working DPS was actually kind of hard for me to get used to since I rode my Spyder without DPS for a while.

Anyway that is where I stand for now as far as my Spyder is concerned. I just want it back while I am still comfortable about the thought of getting back on it. I have ZERO doubt that Cowtown fixed it up right, if not better than what it was before the fire but even knowing that didn't help soothe that feeling of aprehension of getting back on the bike that I had the first week after the fire. My son even told me that he doesn't want to ride my bike anymore and before the fire he was my riding buddy :( But now that feeling is starting to ease up a little for me so yeah, I just want to get back on it while I am still comfortable with the bike.

I'll fill you all in after I get it back as to what all was done and replaced.

I performed a canisterectomy, and then ran the "overflow" line to the back of the Spyder. When it go hot, the fumes were still horrific - they were unbearable before. When discussed with Tech Services, BRP told me to re-install the canister.

I did that & left the line to the rear intact. While there are occasional fumes, when it's really hot (that's 90 here), the problem seems to have gone away. My take is the moved vent tube is the largest part of the fix.

Note that my Spyder always runs at 5/6 bars when the temperature is above 65.

That's sorta on the high end. I have the green, hindle but no ram or juice and run in the 4 in 80F+ and touching 5 when slowing down. I did add ice in the coolent and changed over to royal purple.

welcome

Probably a combination of too-full tank and high heat that did it. I've filled mine to the brim many times and have never had a problem.

I also did the canisterectomy and vented the hose to the swingarm away from the exhaust.

I personally don't trust that :cus: canister. It's not needed and I have no fumes since doing it.

If you are talking about my Spyder then yes, heat could definitely have been one of the causes but not an overfilled fuel tank. Reason I say this is when my Spyder caught on fire I had about half a tank of fuel in it.

If you were refering to something else then please disregard my rambling :D

I was referring to the individual mentioned that had gas over-flowing.

I believe your fire was due to that stupid :cus: canister.

Hi gang, Ok I am going to tell you this in my own opion.....not anything official! Here's what I belive caused the fire....maybe i'm wrong...But I belive at low to now speeds when its hot, and if your canister fuel purge valve opens and realeses the fuems and no air flowing and if you have a small spark....such as a spark plug wire arking or some type of other spark, the combination of all three at the same time, I belive is what has caused the problem....so a very very small chance of all three of theses things happening at the same time, coupled with heat is the cause of this fire........again this is just my opion....but any of you with rs.....check with your dealer or do it yourself just add afoot or so hose on to the vent line comming out of the canister and should give you peace of mine....thanks gang, feel free to disagree....I'm open for others thought

Agreed,, MoLee and I have ours ran all the way near the rear of the tire all Zipped tied in,, Can't hardly see it at all.. And yes after I shut mine off you can still small GAS VAPOR FUMES near the rear end---- Wait let me re-word it, rear tire area..

Now I am not sure here, but I do not think that Firefly is a big fan of this canister... :D

All kidding aside, I tend to agree with him. Seems to me all this stupid thing is is an ignition source. Will definitely do the vent hose mod at least. I will consider the canisterectomy as well...

The first one that catches fire with a vent hose installed, my cannister will go. There is several things in that area that could fuel a fire I think if someone could figure a way to lower the heat in that area it would be even better.

Got it done MoLee....I have a new engine oil addditive and radiator addditive, I ran it saturday in the spyder we took to the lake......drop the engine temp 30 degrees i could feel it running cooler when i rode it! the fan only kicked on one time that i know of, got it back today and check, s it with a lazor and it works....plus it gives longer life to the engine......been running it, in the gear case of one of our drag boats....normal get maybe one race, three pssses out of a gearcase.....have gotten 6 races out of it with the new oil, and still going 18 passes and everything looks great so far!:2thumbs: let me know i'll get you a test sample!

No fair keeping this a secret from the rest of us Len. :D You can send me a PM if you like, but I would definitely like to know what you are using that makes that much of a difference.

I suspect Water Wetter and a good Synthetic oil would do a lot, however the rear exhaust header is just wrong, takes up too much room the way it runs across the area. Needs to run straight down and either be wrapped or ceramic coated.

I removed the carbon canister entirely. Already had the purge valve line blocked up, but after hearing about the fires in that area, decided the canister was not worth the worry, so I got a double quarter inch nipple fitting and just added to the vent line which ran from the fuel tank to the canister and extended it to the front drain hole next to the radiator and secured it with a zip tie to the round cage frame. This was an easy fix and no gas fumes.

Sorry I didn't update this sooner.

I got my Spyder back this past Thursday and I must say it rides even better than what it did before! :2thumbs: I guess having it torn completely down helped to get the extra kinks worked out :D

If I remember correctly based on what Len told me it basically got a new wiring system, some new panels, a new airbox lid, and some other stuff. Cannister is still there but now has the extension added to the vent hose.

I want to again thank Len and the crew at Cowtown for the awesome work they did on my ryde. They really are the best at what they do  It runs better than it has when I first got it. It goes a long way to making me feel comfortable getting back on it again. I must admit though, I am still just a little bit paranoid. I look like a fool sniffing around the bike everytime I shut it down now just to make sure I don't smell anything burning :roflblack:
