Spyder on fire

Sorry I didn't update this sooner.

I got my Spyder back this past Thursday and I must say it rides even better than what it did before! :2thumbs: I guess having it torn completely down helped to get the extra kinks worked out

If I remember correctly based on what Len told me it basically got a new wiring system, some new panels, a new airbox lid, and some other stuff. Cannister is still there but now has the extension added to the vent hose.

I want to again thank Len and the crew at Cowtown for the awesome work they did on my ryde. They really are the best at what they do :bowdown: It runs better than it has when I first got it. It goes a long way to making me feel comfortable getting back on it again. I must admit though, I am still just a little bit paranoid. I look like a fool sniffing around the bike everytime I shut it down now just to make sure I don't smell anything burning :roflblack:

Hi gang, Ok I am going to tell you this in my own opion.....not anything official! Here's what I belive caused the fire....maybe i'm wrong...But I belive at low to now speeds when its hot, and if your canister fuel purge valve opens and realeses the fuems and no air flowing and if you have a small spark....such as a spark plug wire arking or some type of other spark, the combination of all three at the same time, I belive is what has caused the problem....so a very very small chance of all three of theses things happening at the same time, coupled with heat is the cause of this fire........again this is just my opion....but any of you with rs.....check with your dealer or do it yourself just add afoot or so hose on to the vent line comming out of the canister and should give you peace of mine....thanks gang, feel free to disagree....I'm open for others thought

I have to agree with that in a way, I think the fumes from the vent hose being released along with a spark from the plug boots or other component may be causing a small ignition of the vapors for a quick moment. However the rider is unaware, I think the ignition is very short lived but the short lived flame hits the hoses and wiring and it starts to burn and smolder plus with the heat and any other trapped fumes and oil residue, etc. it will eventually spread causing the flame to breakout and black smoke which is from the plastic wiring and rubber burning. I don’t think the canister itself is causing the problem but I do think the improper placing of the vent line which the second update corrects is a big culprit. I think the second update should be a mandatory recall and not only if you’re having problems. Why would you have a vent line dump gas fumes into a hot already crowded engine compartment with tons of electrical systems around it, not to mention the high voltage spark plug boots?!?!? My suggestion is to do the vent line update even if the cost is out of your own pocket, I think your problems will be solved.

Bike has raw gas leak

When we were picking up our new-to-us '08 up last week, fuel started streaming out underneath the bike as soon as they cranked it up. I pointed it out and they wheeled it into the shop. A fuel line leading to the charcoal cnnister had split and they replaced it. After reading this thread, I'm thinking of removing the canister and associated lines.

I have a 09 with 275 miles and have the same problem. The dealer came and towed bike and had tech replace canister, hose, claps, and did all recalls an d updates. However, started bike this morning and more fuel than originally was pouring out the side. So disappointed with the leak, because the temperature in my city is 105 and heat index as high as 115.

I am a new rider now afraid bike has the potential of catching on fire.:dontknow:

I had a fuel leak - it was pouring out like a garden hose - was a loose clamp. Easy fix. Did you check to see if a clamp was loose?
