There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Oil for spyder

RP MOTO 4T 20W50
$5.99
This weight oil will not meet BRP specs! The Spyder takes 5W40 synthetic, with restrictions on the specification, too. Some folks have substituted 10W40 motorcycle oils (Amsoil) and some have used 5W40 Shell Rotella diesel (I think). Look at some old post here. or do a search.

Read your manual and look carefully at any oil you substitute to make sure it meets the spec. You already have a major problem that needs dealer attention. Don't void the warranty with the wrong oil. A good dealer would pick the wounded Spyder up at your house since it is not rideable, BTW.

Just wondering why everyone always wants to skimp on oil. This is the most important thing you can do to keep the bike in good condition. A few bucks now sure beats a bunch later plus all the time of no bike to ride and the troubles with having to get it fixed.:dontknow:

Never skimp on oil or preventative maintenance, '91 BMW has 397K miles on it and all I did was PM. Only other major thing done was a top end rebuild during that time. It is imperative that all maintenance is done accordingly to ensure long and happy relationships with your mechanical friends.

This is the oil that the BRP dealer in Florida used in my bike (reading invoices) for over 9,000 miles. :read:

good call scotty.Do not put anything but what is called for in your owners manual.brp pays a lot of money to its engineers to make an oil to work with there engines.!!!
I have worked for Honda for 15 years and have replaced many transmissions because people put the wrong fluid in it because they think they are more intelligent than Honda! You can change more often and that never hurts.

I think I'd be saving that documentation someplace safe.......
Yeah, scary when the dealer doesn't follow BRP's own spec. If there were an oil related problem, BRP certainly wouldn't cover it under warranty, and you would be forced to sue the dealer directly. Ouch! I'd be asking some real serious questions, or finding another dealer pronto.

Given what happened according to your post about the Spyder biting back I wouldn't be messing with anything and just wait for the dealer to address the issue. A major oil leak like that at 1,200 miles is abnormal enough that I wouldn't waste time trying to diagnose it myself.

What oil other than BRP oil can be used in the :spyder:. I have not found the leak as yet.:(

my buddy is using Castrol 5W-40 Syn ... the BRP oil comes in on Castrol pallets ... so that would lead people to believe that Castrol makes the oil for BRP .

:agree::agree::agree:

Exactly. Why try to save $150 a year by using some cheaper oil?

I would RUN from any dealer that isn't using the BRP specific branded oil. They are playing with fire. I would be shocked if BRP allows this practice.

I guess if the owner brings in their own oil that meets the proper specs - sure - but for a dealer to sell another brand of oil for the Spyder is just asking for trouble.

If you follow the exact specs the manual requires - you should be fine.

My Spyder will never drink anything other than genuine BRP oil.

As an avid reader of this forum and soon to be Spyder owner I have a question.

It seems the first thing people do when they get (some even before!) their spyder is plunk down several hundred to several thousand dollars on mods, add-ons, upgrades, etc. but worry/want to save a couple of bucks on something as important as oil? :dontknow:

We have already gone through Oil War I on this site and it looks like Oil War II is breaking out. The Owners Guide has recommendations and every owner is free to follow or ignore them. The real savings on oil changes is not the oil, but the labor at $90/hr. Owners did not agree in Oil War I and I doubt Oil War II will end any differently. For the record, I am with the BRP oil allies even though it is obviously made by some other major oil supplier.

I don't worry about the cost of oil, however there are just as good if not better oils available at you local auto parts store that meet the requirements of BRP so why not use them? Another thing to consider is the ease of purchase. I live about 70 miles from my dealer and if I'm changing my own oil every 3K why not use something I can pick up 5 miles from my house?

I use MOBIL 1 in my Nissan Frontier V6, and my Wife's Mazda Protege ES. I've been using it for years in all my vehicles. If BRP doesn't show this as an alternative, so be it. I'll use the BRP Synthetic. I will not go cheap on oil. It's not worth it; just like Scotty said.

I guess I should have said oil that meets or exceeds BRP recommended oil. So just for the record I did purchase the BRP oil.

BRP doesn't recommend BRANDS (other than its own), only specifications. My suggestion; put the least expensive 5W40 Synthetic that meets the BRP specs in your Spyder, and enjoy the ride. The recommended change interval virtually guarantees ANY MANUFACTURER'S OIL will meet your engine's needs -- even "cheap" oil. ;)

Some get a "feel good" from using BRP branded oil, others get the same by saving a few bucks over BRP's (my opinion) ridiculously over-priced offering -- to each his own.

Until someone offers credible evidence proving BRP's branded oil allows our Spyder to run better or last longer, I will continue to purchase my oil at Wally-World -- three miles from home (instead of 40) at 17 bucks-a-gallon (instead of 28).

Regards,

Mark
