Helmet Recommendations

I'm looking for a helmet - thinking a modular style - and was wonder if any of you had any recommendations or thoughts. Thanks!

Helmets are a very personal choice for everyone. What one person likes another dislikes. I have the Shoei Neotec modular helmet and love it. Very pricey, but my noggin' is priceless. My suggestion is to find a shop that has a variety of helmets and a knowledgeable salesperson. Try on many different helmets and styles. If you find one you like but has pressure points, a good knowledgeable salesperson can try different pads (thicker or thinner) to give you that perfect fit. The helmets should be snug but not too tight. Also, don't skimp on price. Your helmet will be the most important thing for your Spyder that you will ever buy IMO.

Nolan: Been using these for years. Prefer the modular versions. The N-44 and N-40 (latest iterations) will NOT accept the Sena communicators. I have two more being delivered today. Now I have eight.

Good deal on N-40 from Motorcycle Superstore. $242 each. Sizing is very important. You should test for size on the brand you decide to go with at a local store. You can then decide whether to spend your money there or use the internet. Internet saved me $100 per helmet this go around.

I agree, you can't cheap out on helmet

Obviously money plays a factor in all the stuff we buy, but this is a good place to over invest!

wife and I both wear schuberth c3 and love them, they do take a little while to break in but worth the investment. Quiet, comfortable and solidly built.

The absolute best helmet you can buy is the one that fits your head shape and is comfortable to wear....so you will!

Don't buy a helmet without trying it on for proper fit and shape. I found Cycle Gear had a great assortment of brands and price range to try out. Figures my head fit an Arai.....At least I have one thing in common with Jay Leno!

A Scorpion modular helmet. The visors are quickly interchangeable. You can easily take the chin bar off and wear it as an open face.

modular is the way to go. very flexible. Get a carbon fiber is you can afford it. About 75 to 100 more bucks but the weight on long trip is very noticeable. They weight a lot less than the plastic and on long rides your neck will love you.

I have been comparing weight differences - carbon to the Aria Signet Q and have found little if any weight difference. If you have some data on weight comparisons, carbon to non carbon. Please share.

Every helmet brand is a slightly different shape. Some even vary in their own brand. Find the shape that best matches your head (regular, oval regular, slightly oval etc etc) and measure your head size, and then look at the reviews. Most Shoeis for example are intermediate oval, meaning they will fit a head that is oval in shape, rather than round.

Have a look on the Web and here for suggestions that fit your requirements, then check the Webb site for reviews and fitment. You will still have to try one on (preferably wear it in the shop for at least a half hour) before buying, of course

Thanks everyone for your help. The suggestions and tips really helped in the selection process. Purchased a HJC IS MAX II and am very pleased with the fit, comfort and quietness of the helmet. The visibility is excellent and the inner shield is convenient - no more struggling with sunglasses! Going into the bike shop informed and somewhat knowledgeable made the selection process less daunting. Thanks again! :thumbup:

Just re-read the thread properly and noticed the OP bought a HJC helmet, good choice that, I had a nasty off in 2011 and the HJC saved my life. :thumbup:
