• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Just curious - if I pick up the filter and oil from a BRP dealer would I still be covered under warranty if i provide my own 600 mile service.

Let me be the first to NOT answer your question, but to recommend that you let a dealer do the 600 mile service. I think this is a "penny wise, pound foolish" situation.

(I bet you a nickel that even the hard core mechanics and bike restorers who are members on this message board will agree... :thumbup: )
 
Anyone know if going over the 625 is a bad thing in the eyes of BRP? I have 550 miles on it now with a 200 mile ride setup for sunday. So I will likely have 800+ miles on it by the time i'm able to get the first service done.

BRP didn't have any oil filters available for the batch of deliveries in the Spring. Our dealer said just to ride it until they came in. I actually obtained a filter elsewhere, and cut back on riding a bit until the service, but still had 850 on the clock when it went in. They had absolutely no problem with that.

check with your dealer first....many dealers, including mine in harlingen texas have done the first service free of charge. my sales manager said they would use it as practice for their service staff since they haven't worked on many :spyder:yet.
 
These bikes arent fine china. Change the oil, and drive on. If you have any mechanical ability, and 2 eyes, you can do what the dealer does, and it wont cost you an arm and a leg.
 
Supposedly the dealer goes over the bike during first service and checks a number of settings and measurements.
I was suprised to learn that the computer check which is normally a first service item to be checked, is not checked by my dealer.

This is exactly what I was worried about - it has nothing to do with the expense, I don't like monkeys training on a bike that my wife and I depend on for our safety!
 
i understand what your saying.......our dealer was very thorough and took us step by step explaining what they have done, taking my wife and i to the service area to meet with the tech and showing exactly what they do for the first service. there isnt much about the service thats any different from a cruiser or a sportbike. my only fear was if something were to go wrong with the spyder after 600 miles and i did the service myself, brp would come back and say it was something i caused.

What could they say - you didn't pour the oil in the right hole! LOL:yikes:
 
I don't think it's the oil change as much as the other checks that they are supposed to complete at 600 miles. I've changed my own oil for each oil change after the 600 mile check. For my 6,000 mile service, I changed my own oil but the dealer still got the Spyder to do their checks.

Actually......

The ONLY part of the first service your dealer can do that you can't is hook up to the BUDS and download any stored error codes. Some may have qualms about adjusting the drive belt themselves, but other than that, I can't think of any service task beyond the skills of the average back yard mechanic.


From the Spyder Operator's Guide:
  • Replace Engine Oil and Filter
  • Inspect Engine Coolant
  • Check Fault Codes -- (need a BUDS computer)
  • Inspect Spark Plugs
  • Inspect Drive Belt
  • Lubricate Suspension Arms
  • Inspect Parking Brake
That's it for the 625 mile service -- seems pretty straightforward to me. Indeed, aside from pulling a spark plug and connecting the thing to a BUDS computer, I would consider ALL of these tasks mandatory before taking a long trip. It seems a bit much to me that I would have to take the thing to the dealer any time I wanted to leave the local area...

If you find a problem while inspecting your machine, then you can decide whether any required repairs are beyond your capabilities. If so, take to the dealer armed with the knowledge of exactly what's wrong, and exactly what you want them to do to fix it. You can avoid a myriad of misunderstandings with this technique!

If you complete the service items yourself, and you're concerned about warranty issues, obtain a small booklet, write down what you did, the mileage, the date and sign it. You might even consider taking a few photos as "proof" you completed the service. Log all the maintenance tasks you complete in the booklet the same way. Store the booklet and photos with your other Spyder-related maintenance paperwork.

We have done the service on mine and have had no issues at all. It has been in the shop for the brake issues and a belt issue early on, but the dealer had no issues with us doing the service ourselves. Hubby builds and restores bikes so he knows his way around more than the mechanics at the shop. We did call Lamonster for some advice on the belt tension but other than that, no issues at all and a lot less money.

NO DEALER IN NEW MEXICO. THERE IS A CAN-AM DEALER, BUT NOBODY TRAINED TO WORK ON SPYDERS. I MET A GUY FROM THE SERVICE DEPT. HE SAID SOME SPYDER OWNERS ARE BRINGING THEM IN ANYWAY. I DID THE 1ST OIL CHANGE MYSELF AT 1000M. MY SPYDER HAS ABOUT 1400M NOW. KNOCK ON WOOD, I AM NOT HAVING ANY OF THE PROBLEMS I HAVE HEARD OF YET. DID NOT WANT TO TRUST THE DEALER SINCE THEY ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO WORK ON SPYDERS. ALSO AFTER DOING THE OIL CHANGE MYSELF AND SEEING WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO, I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO PAY 100 DOLLARS OR BETTER FOR AN OIL CHANGE. I WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO BREAK DOWN AND BUY A MANUEL.
 
Just had my first service at 770 miles. With the sales tax it came to $260. What have others paid? Seems high to me but then my Spyder dealer is in a "high rent district".
