Confirmed USA 2013 RT-S MELTING

Scotty had a good idea in another post. File a complaint with the NHTSA to get them to move their approval process along.
Perhaps I interpreted previous posts about this subject incorrectly, but I was under the impression the FIX is currently being evaluated by NHTSA, i.e. they want to make sure the FIX is a true FIX. No sense in NHTSA approving something that isn't permanent.

I liked the one post wondering which "bean counter" approved the original 2013 design. I am not an engineer, but just looking at the close proximity of the exhaust to the plastic parts AND knowing from previous model years complaints about high heat coming off the exhaust, it doesn't make sense this passed the smell test let alone trained design engineers.

Thanks for posting the pics for the 2013. Does anyone know how this is different from 2012's? Any pictures to compare?

NO More wobbles at highway speeds when you get your Spyder Laser Aligned...the biggest problem right now is finding a dealer that has the new laser system...www.spydercomfort.com
Fits right in with the discussion and subject of this thread.

There is no recall in the US as yet, only in Canada.
Reminds me of the old saying...

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around, does it make a sound?

If a Spyder catches fire and there is no recall in the US, does it really burn?

Just received a phone call from my dealership's service advisor, telling me the recall is official and he has ordered kits to fix the problem... he will notify me when those kits show up and in goes my '13RT... LOVE LARSON POWERSPORTS! :D

Still not listed on NHTSA site.

Yes it does, I have a game camera with sound in the woods 2 miles from anyone,
And a tree did fall and made a sound....

Parts ordered

Called the dealer this morning here in Daytona Beach. They found the approval this morning and the parts are ordered for my 2013 RT. Also, it seems that Mike at Spydercomfort has designed a heat shield for the heat under the glove box. I will be anxious to try that out also. I think once these issues are addressed, I'll be good to go. :ohyea::ohyea::ohyea:

i was told by my SPYD3R mechanic last nite at an OCR gathering, that the dealers have been informed not to sell the 2013 RT's in the U.S. because of this...:yikes:
any1 know if this is FACT...?

Yes, its true. My new RT-S is being held at the dealer and unable to deliver until the recall is cleared. Parts are shipping today for delivery tomorrow. We now hope to take delivery Sat evening or next Friday if not.

Spyder to Dealer Today

I got my :spyder2: to the dealer today so they can fix the recall issues. Three days ago they had order the new Master Cylinder, as mine was melted, unknown when it will arrive. :dontknow:
The did have the "RECALL KITS" to shield the MC. BRP has NOT included wrapping the exhaust pipe :banghead:
My TECH said he would do that for me when he gets the MC installed. My TECH, Shawn, has a WEB PG showing PICTURES of the BRP repair.

Dropped our RT-S in for service

I had other issues to have looked at on our new Spyder as well as an oil change. I heard about the recall and sent it to the dealer. Now I don't have a Spyder for a couple extra days as they wait for the part. They won't let me take it home! I assume that means the part has melted but not yet failed. Too dangerous to drive. I have 6200 miles on the bike. And we just got back from a 3500 mile trip to Great Smolky Mountains. Man it's hot there. No wonder there is heat stress on the machine. Especially riding two up with a trailer the whole way.

The dealer is great. They are stuck between me and BRP and doing all they can. But I'm in Ontario. My riding is coming to end real fast. I have two months at the most before I have tuck her away for the winter:(

I'm going to try to get my hands on the old part. I'm concerned about how hot this machine gets.

Your dealer will probably have to send that part back to BRP...
Perhaps your dealer will let you get some pics of it before they send it back?? :dontknow:

2013 rt with 3k miles

saw post today so i pulled tupperware off to find no problem, Yet:ohyea:Will call dealership tomorrow, thanks for the heads up:bowdown:

who is the person that puts "plastic" this close to a heat source?

who is the person that puts "plastic" this close to a heat source? When we where racing Quarter Midgets the plastic fuel line ran within 2 inches of the exhaust so I wrapped my fuel line in insulation, went to the Grands in CT and was deemed "illegal" in the inspection area after winning the feature " for cooling the fuel " ? hello??? well finally 2 years later after many fires the fuel line has to be now" braided steel " ...sometimes no common sense

Who is the person that puts "plastic" this close to a heat source? Easy. It is the engineer who can save a nickel a ton when one manufactures a couple hundred thousand units nojoke

Like the comedian said about God when he designed women, "who in their right mind would put a waste disposal outlet right next to a recreation area..."

Got my recall notice yesterday and called the dealer. Repair kits are on backorder, so he took my name and phone # and will call to schedule a visit when they come in. Now, wouldn't the folks at BRP know how many units are out there and get the parts supply in order for an issue they were aware of several months ago? I'm starting to rethink my purchase here. $30 large is a lot of money to be sitting in the garage waiting on someone to call.

All Repairs are Done.....

Just got home from a 300 mile weekend trip on my 2013 RT-S with 2000 miles on the odometer. Read about the RECALL and pulled the tupperware to find this, see attached pics. So now I wait for our gov't to make a decision, could be years of no riding...:gaah: HELP me BRP :yikes:

Talked to my service dept today, Pro Caliber, Longview, WA, all the RECALL work was completed on :spyder:. They also wrapped the exhaust pipe for me. Pick up tomorrow and see how the "HEAT" issue was taken care of...:dontknow:

Thanks Shawn for your great work on this issue...

Maybe they were just waiting to see if any more Spyders would burn up before they did anything

Recall Notice

Maybe they were just waiting to see if any more Spyders would burn up before they did anything

Got home from long weekend ride, about 1000 miles, went camping for a few days, came back home this past Monday, put on the new gadget floor boards Tuesday, and went for a 250 mile ride. Went to work Wednesday, stopped to check the mail, and there it was - Important Safety Recall Notice - Air mailed out from Canada, on the 4th of September. Called the dealer this morning, has everything he needs for the fix, but booked through next Tuesday. Scheduled to take it in next weekend for the fix. He said he would probably have to replace the master cylinder as well from what he's seen so far. Called a local dealer and their service dept. is still in the dark about the Recall. go figure !! :sour:

Finally got around to pulling off the Tupperware and looking . . . sure enough, my master cylinder is melting . . . I have an appointment on the 17th . . . question is, should I ride it there (an hour's trip), or tell them to tow it?

I can't really answer your question. All I can say is that I have almost 14,000 miles on my 2013 RT-S. I took it in soley for the purpose of having my 14,000 oil change and maintenance, the "recall fix", some other "diddys" and found that the Master Cylinder was melting and needed a new one. I had no idea, and would think that this condition did not occur just when I was taking it to the dealership. Hope this helps.

Chris
