• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

High heat paint re- visited

anyone know of anything new in the high heat spray paint realm. i can't keep paint on my pipe. it all starts to burn off or let go at some point. i have VHT header paint on it right now, it has lasted the longest, but is ready for a do-over. lots of new members means new ideas. any thoughts?:popcorn:

I was gonna suggest some of VHT's finest... but you've already got it in your arsenal. :opps:
How long did it last when compared to your other choices? Paint is always needing to be refreshed, so perhaps it just did it's deal and was ready for a fresh spritz...

i think the red has lasted about one riding season, more or less. i'll look for that thread. the rustoleum, about half that. sprayed it red around aug. 7, 2012. 2 or 3 thousand miles ago. w t h . way less than i thought.:banghead:

I think lasting a riding season is great! I use a high temp black from RS Hughes on my wife's Spyder. I (or she) have to touch up the end of the pipe (same pipe you have) every few months.

i just finished my RT OEM-DYI MUFFLER MOD today... and i used RUSTOLEUM BBQ GRILL paint, with no ill effects...
oh ya, sure, i smell burgers while ryding, but that ain't a bad thing now, is it.... :bbq:

powder coating might do it. i just found out a guy in my neighborhood can powdercoat. going to look into it.:thumbup:
 
Powedercoated finishes can change color under extremely high heat conditions. I have seen bright red turn to a dull brownish burgundy on headers.

I worked at Morton International Powder Coatings in the 1990's. They had a powder coating that turned to the colour that the customer wanted after the first heating. I don't know if they still make it. What was brand of the powder coating that was used that turned colour and how many years ago. There are many different manfacture that make coatings world wide.

I don't know the brands of the failures I have seen, only the results. They were not mine. Most of the color change was near the header flanges, where the heat is most intense. In an automotive application, it could also readily have involved contamination of the heated surface. I have never seen ceramic coated headers do it, though. My feeling about pipes is that it is best to just repaint them periodically, and learn to live with it. Even the highest rated coatings (excepts ceramic) seem to deteriorate over time. JMHO

failed. vht header paint is failing. i just thought there might be something better to use, short of powdercoating. maybe a silver, or black again. they all look good for a couple of months , then it starts to flake off.:dontknow: my pipe ( muffler) is large i.d. small o.d., so the exterior gets much hotter than the stock pipe.
 
high heat paint.

My dad used air high temp power coat pant. $25. for the power, if you have a power coater he can get it. must have all grease and sand it out to be lay down but will hold like a rock. cw
 
the key to getting a durable finish is to glass bead the surface wash with denatured alcohol and paint as soon as possible at room temp, two to three coats no more waiting 60 min between coats. let dry 24 hours then heat it slowly to operating temp.

I just bought a Yoshimura slip-on exhaust for my RSS. The can is black carbon fiber :yes: but the rest is shiny stainless steel.:mad:

I read this thread and while I'm investigating the cost of powder coating, I'm wondering about the relative ease of the high heat paint. Did anyone use this particular VHT product? http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/flameproof/ Was it particularly difficult and did it last? I'm OK with touching up once a season.

Any input would be helpful.

DEI High Temp Silicone Paint lasted the longest for me.

that's exactly what i did. satin black ceramic coating.i was told it's ceramic, anyway. :roflblack: i guess it's been over a thousand miles or so and it still looks great. no burning anywhere. i'm done with the heat paint.:thumbup:

the VHT red is what i used last time, it didn't do well. i think i had the best luck with rustoleum ultra bbq black.
