backrest from rss keeps coming off while driving

the backrest i have which was dealer installed keeps falling off as i am driving..it is an everytime issue now and i have had to leave it off...what is even more disturbing to me, is that the plate cover when you dont have the backrest on, rattles like crazy and i cannot leave that on..so basically i just have this hollow shell in the back..any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanx..

I think the locking mechanism is broken. If they installed it, it's probably broken since then. Also, possibly the cable used to unlock the backrest for removal has the locking function just barely catching because the cable is pulling it. Just a personal look by you should be able to see this, if you haven't already done so.

Can't add much more here. It sounds like the dealer did something wrong on the install. You are the first that has mentioned backrest falling off. A great accessory to have if you want to take someone you don't like for a ride though. :roflblack:

It does sound like the locking cable is out of adjustment since both the backrest and the rattle of the sport plate are happening. If something was broke, your Sport plate would not rattle it would just lift right up and fall off.

I'm not sure when this was installed (Limited time liability from dealer), but if it was installed awhile ago you better hope nothing is broken because you can not get parts for BRP accessories.

The sport plate and back rest are both a 2 stage latch and lock like a car door.

The first click you here is the latch engaging, but it's not locked in yet. I've noticed on both our Spyders that it might feel locked in fairly tight but then when you start riding it'll rattle or move about. It shouldn't come off tho, as it is latched and under spring tension. If it unlatches on it's own, the cable is either way out of adjustment or just plain installed wrong.

You have to give the backrest/plate a good shove to make sure you get that second click which is the lock. If it's unreasonably difficult to get it to lock in, again it's something wrong with the installation. In our case it was the rubber bumpers. When we had them painted they removed the stock rubber bumpers and lost them. They tried to use some bumpers they found elsewhere and they were too thick so it was difficult to lock in. On the one Spyder we replaced them with thinner ones, on the other I just push harder.

Good luck. Get your dealer to figure it out, that's what you paid them for in the first place right?

I installed my own. I have a lot of experience in installing, on cars, water craft, and motorcycles. I would take it back to your dealer and tell him to repair it or replace it or you are going to talk to BRP. It's a BRP item they must fix or replace it.
