Yellow Spyder Fire

Irrelevant was probably a poor choice of words.

The point I was attempting to make was that had this been an isolated incident, i.e. no other Spyders had spontaneously combusted, then looking for an external cause would be far more relevant. The fact that other spyders have caught fire should focus the investigation around looking for a common cause.

How many years did Ford deny anything systemic withing their trucks that could cause them to catch fire while sitting in a driveway hours after being parked only to find a defective cruise control switch was the culprit?

Personally, I think you have to rule out any common element before you start looking at additional causal factors. Perhaps it will turn out that the common issue is load on the accessory circuit? Who knows?

I just find it highly unlikely that these fires (3 or 4 that I'm aware of) aren't the result of the same defect.

IMHO what was plugged into the accessory socket is not relevant until all common factors are eliminated. You certainly have the right to disagree.

The real truth is we are all working in the dark here. Nobody knows much of anything and we are all speculating (including me).

It has been mentioned, and it is sadly true, that with this much fire damage it may well be there can be no definite cause determined. Fire investigation is an art mixed with science, experience and a good eye for evidence.

Some are better at it than others. Even so there are many times where even an expert just can't say.

The thing to avoid here are "Conclusions", all of which have a high probablity of error and get us no closer to a solution.

I pulled into my shop one day and shut the spyder off and before I got off I saw smoke and smelled plastic burning. I quickly jumped off and pulled it back outside. I then looked to see what it was and it turned out to be a locate flag that I must have run over and flipped up on the exhaust pipe. I have had all sorts of stuff catch fire when it gets flipped up on the hot engine of the mower too.

A fire incident that happened to me.

I am going to tell you something that happened to my yellow/black spyder. A few weeks back I was on a short ride and smelled burning. Then I saw flames inside the left side cover. I pulled over got the side cover off and put the fire out. I found the remains of a white terry type cloth on my oil cooler. When I had checked the catch can earlier there was no cloth there. I had just replaced all my shop cloths with 50 new ones which are a reddish orange. All 50 were accounted for and none have burns on them. Now I do not know where this cloth came from but since this incidence I have checked every little cavity on all our spyders with a flashlight. The only thing I found during this inspection were a couple of loose part numbers labels. There is nothing quite like a fire between your legs to scare the bee jeebers out of you when you have a full tank of gas.

Bare in mind the cloth was lying on the oil cooler when it started to flame. It was not on the manifold but 3 inches away on the cooler. Thank goodness two weeks earlier I had shielded the electronic module just above the oil cooler. You wouldn't think there was that much heat on the oil cooler.

You may want to look for the reminents of a cloth in the area where the fire started. /Ken

I'am sad pissed off and upset about this entire thing. I have spoke with another Spyder Rando.......he has stopped by and saw the bike. I have spoken to him about this and we have both shared questions.

I know this matter is dear and true to the hearts of every bike owner out here. I will update folks as to any information once i get it. In the event it my help someone else form dealing with matters of this nature. At this time I have filed a claim with my Insurance Company they have already sent out a rep. To view the bike.

BRP has called me Three times. In fact they called once the day after this happened within 24 hours. So to say they are not aware or concerned about matters like this is not true. This is only my opion as we all know one's view can chage with time.

Now depending on what they do with the information that could change my view of what I think about them.

Keep In mind I was not active on this forum for sometime. And honest i did not even know about this as a problem with these bikes. Until I was on the phone with the Insurance company and my youngest son on his own searched the web and found a couple pictures of some bikes that caught on fire.

At this time I understand the huge concern about this matter with everyone out here. As soon as I know anything and anything that is true not guessing to the cause I myself will post that information and will not wait for someone else to inform all the people on this forum about the cause.

In closing I would like to thank each and everyone for the concern they have shared and shown about my safety in this matter.

I will pass on any information that I get that would help to ensure the safety of each and every person out here that rides or ownes a spyder.

Thank you

...

As it is now, I'm not concerned about a Spyder fire any more than I am about a fire with my Lexus...there are simply too many things that people do to these bikes and many times the fires might not be due to anything BRP has done...

Lexus has a fire problem too? I thought Lexus owners only had to worry about floormats wedging under the accelerator pedal?

Thank you for your very thoughtful post. I am sure you are unhappy, to say the least. You seem to have handled it well, though, and my hat is off to you. One final request. Please file a complaint with the NHTSA. If these fires are not reported, there is less possibility of a solution for us all.

Yep, there are plenty of Lexus fire videos like this one.

Guess you'll have to park your Lexus now.

Tell me what you drive and I can get you a video of one burning. Maybe we should all start walking!

Oh, but then I can find you a video of pedestrians getting nailed by people who have decided NOT to park their potentially faulty vehicle.

I guess you just can't win! :joke::D:joke:

Thanks for the update Mr. K. Hopefully they will be able to locate the cause and you can let the rest of us know. I would also be interested in finding out how the insurance company deals with an issue like this.

Best of luck to you.

All these problems are just crazy. Ive owned my spyder for only about 3 months and now I wonder if I made a bad decision. I have not had any problems so far, but with all thats going on I can only wonder when it will start. Dont get me wrong I love my spyder, but dang enough is enough. I have owned numerious bikes and have never seen anything like this. For everyone who is having problems I really hope things get straightened out for ya.

Exactly.

Heck -- Someguy(Mike) still plays the drums even after watching Spinal Tap-----:roflblack:

Heck #2 --- if everyone judged having a wife by what my ex was like---- nobody would ever get married!:roflblack:

Let's let the facts come out --- but reporting with the NHTSA is most important!

I am really sorry to hear you feel that way. I hope, like after having an accident yourself, you find a way to get past it. I never thought I'd say this, but it is beginning to look like the best way to Spyder without worry is to stay the heck off the forums! :D Reports of problems are useful, the continual rehashing of them is not. Now we are scaring off formerly contented owners who have had no problems and are perfectly happy. What have we done! :yikes:

:agree:Would love to see a complete poll results on these issues but we probably could never get all the happy owners without problems to add their 2 cents. I still say if we saw the complete picture, meaning all Spyders the problems would not look so bad.

+1

Millions of people have been diagnosed with cancer. There are many, many millions more who live cancer free. What's happening in some cases here would be akin to those cancer free people walking around deathly worried about the day when they will contract cancer.

thats exactly my point in the other post I had and nearly got castrated for it!:yikes::D

Sorry Scotty, I have to disagree, just this once.......LOL

Ignorance might be bliss, and I guess it works for some folks, but I'd MUCH prefer to run with all the information I can.....If we don't discuss problems, how can we find a solution? Or lean on the manufacturer? Although at times, things look gloomy, so does anything in life. This too shall pass......I think the answer lies in keeping it in perspective as it applies to YOUR OWN situation. But I need to be armed with all the information I can in order to do that....

I'd rather be aware and be prepared for a possible incident, than to have something strike out of the clear blue sky, because I didn't pay attention to the chatter.....:chat:

I have to agree with you when that flury of information is based on FACTS. Unfortunately, of late, much, not all but quite a bit of the "facts" in recent posts are in reality just opinions and speculation!! While everybody is truly entitled to their opinions, opinions do not resolve problems. Well thought out, well researched quantitative analysis solves problems. Several spyderlovers have attempted to do this by at the very least trying to determine the scope of the problems. You know like what model year had the fires, spyders running or stopped, problems before or after updates, what category of mods and yet this has still not been accomplished because the focus has been on complaining or voicing ones discontent with BRP.

Come on people, instead of the continual BRP and spyder bashing and/or negativity lets actually try to get some factual data that we can collectively provide to BRP to assist in resolving the problems. I was always taught by my parents that it is ALWAYS BETTER TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION THEN PART OF THE PROBLEM !

OK I am ready to be castrated now by my fellow spyderlovers....bring on the blade !
