• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

To Steve (BRPcare) about DESS issues

My vote is for BRP to give the dealers the ability to disable it. If someone feels they need my Spyder more than I do, well that is why I pay for insurance.

Why would you think that you would be covered by insurance for theft when the immobilizer has been deliberately bypassed?

There's not a vehicle made that couldn't be stolen regardless of security items if they thief(s) want it bad enough. What good is BRP's security for the Spyder if it has the potential to leave you stranded at anytime, anywhere.

Electronics that receive signals wouldn't cause a problem. It's devices that transmit that MAY cause a problem, and that would be only if they are transmitting while the DESS is interrogating the key.

Without knowing the frequency of the key RF it is guess work.

To my way of thinking I believe the root of the problem is the lack of strength of the radio waves coming from the key. That may be related to a too weak magnetic field that stimulates the key to produce its radio wave, or maybe a less than ideal frequency of the magnetic field. The chip in the 2014 and later keys is different than 2013 earlier and the entire scheme may just not be as robust as it used to be. It's conceivable to me that the ultimate solution may require a new chip in the key.

^^^^ That kinda makes sense. But, the more posts I read on this, more and more ideas kinda make sense -- or not !
BRP have to be monitoring this chit chat - I'm sure.
I know Yamaha, Cypress CA monitor the FJR forum.

That's not the point if someone can steal it. Of course they can. Back up a truck load it on and it's gone. Immobilizer or not. In every insurance policy there is language that gets them off the hook to pay if the owner deliberately increases the risk to the insurer. So if the owner disables or allows the immobiliser to be disabled and that is a factor in the loss. They don't have to pay.

Bypassing really isn't the answer. They need to figure out how to fix the problem.

Since all of this hullabaloo started, when they went to the "upgraded" system with the Crypto-Chip keys: do you think that they're expecting the same old DESS module to handle chores that it wasn't designed for? :dontknow:

Or was that upgraded at the same time?

And this is the whole point of this thread. Isn't it. BRP needs to fix this!

No, this was not the point of this thread. The point of the thread was simply to ask a question. And it was directed to BRPcare. All other except one is conversation telling of their experience and feelings about the issue. The focus is still to get a real answer from Steve or someone at BRPcare.

PS: Don't be sorry, a great deal of information has surfaced that has stirred some good discussion. I still think that what we are seeing might be the system functioning the way it was intended. Not necessarily how we think it should.

I'm sure BRP is aware of it and will keep us informed as what to do.

You are probably right that they know about it, but you are smoking some good stuff if you think that they give a crap or will let us know. Look at the suggestions so far, "its your fault, he have something Look what it took and how many years before they had to fix the heat issue in the 2013. They never admitted that it was their fault.

IMO if they figure this out, the Gov will probably be the ones to force them to. IMO the easiest solution is to go back to the 2013 units, reprogram the ECM if need. I agree disabling it, does open up a can of worms for them and I think that if the dealer could do it, they would probably do it and not tell you. You'd never know one way or the other.

Do many of the folks that have had the DESS error have the GPS unit? These emit a significant amount of RF noise and may be part of the problem. On the RT they are very near the ignition key. Just a theory.

My local friends, neither have a GPS and they have had DESS failures.

I doubt BRP themselves is smart enough to solve this. They probably have a vendor of the system, software and BRP is going to them to resolve it.

It's been over 2 years since the first ignition switch fiasco, and about that time DESS errors began to happen. 2 years is a long time to troubleshoot the cause, design a remedy, and accomplish repairs.

I bet the answer is on an email server somewhere that has no relevant information on it...

I'd bet that BRP makes the vendor eat the cost to replace the defective DESS modules, ignition switch's, keys and labor. It's not costing them so they don't care.

Edit: I'd also guess that BRP will not reply, they are hoping that this and the other thread just become inactive and that nobody notices. "Just shut up and hope they go away".

DESS & FIXING

:gaah:....Just to scare the Cr*p out of all of you......The RT windshield ARM started breaking in 2011 ....5 years ago.......and this is a MEGA EXPENSE REPAIR ....... Not hard or expensive to re-design ..Heck the guy in Australia did it in His Garage ...........Has BRP done anything on this YET ...:yikes: :roflblack: :roflblack: :roflblack: :roflblack: :roflblack: :roflblack: ......so don't anybody hold their breath waiting.....JMHO.....Mike

I'm not sure the government is interested if it's not a threat to life or limb. And again, does anyone have a number of actual issues. We have 8,900 miles on our 2015 rts and ride with others who have 14s and 15s. None of us have had an issue as of yet. I've also noticed in other postings members describing how and where to drill your key so a holder can be added. Have the affected done this?

The only thing drilling your key would do is if you drilled thru the chip, then it wouldn't work. And I see that some 2015s have had this problem. If it was per chance other interference, they could quickly reproduce it in their lab, if they actually cared or wanted to fix it. I probably won't sell my 14 yet, like Sam is thinking but I think when Honda gets their 3 wheeler into production (front wheels) BRP will have a problem.
