Ticking

Started my 08 GS yesterday and heard a ticking noise coming from the engine which am sure it wasn't doing before???Just back from a weekend ride covering 560 miles without any problems but still ticking,anyone had this with theirs or any ideas what it might be?Just over 7000 on the clock

First I will say that many people refer to the sound(s) an engine makes when it is cooling down as "ticking" and that is normal. For a moment I'll assume that what you are referring to is different. Ticking sounds often come from the valve train. The most likely causes are a. low oil level and b. the valves are out of adjustment and need a new shim(s). With your low mileage the need for shim replacement is highly unlikely. The clutch also could make such a noise. You do not say if you are driving a manual or semi automatic, but they both have a clutch. Good luck :thumbup:

Sorry it's a manual,I know the sound you mean when it's cooling but this ticking is when it's running.Think I will do an oil n filter change to see if that helps,Thanks for the reply

I'd have a look at the oil first. I think you are on the right track with an oil & filter change :thumbup:

Ok oil change done still ticking :/ also I put in the 3.9L and it was below half on the dip stick???

You DID follow the correct procedure for checking the oil level; didn't you?
If it's taking that much oil; it had to be just about bone dry in there!

Yup I was reading the manual as I was doing it :L there was plenty oil came out Bob and I now have it just below full which is where I like it Things went **** up when I noticed the back mud guard was broken down the sides so I ended up stripping as much off as I could.I had been hearing a rattle coming from the back end for a while but never noticed it until tonight,has anyone else had this happen

If you rev it up from idle; does the ticking stop? :dontknow:
(I'm no mechanic at all; but I wonder if a lifter in the valvetrain got damaged somehow...)

Split

From what I've read and seen the split on the rear mudguard bracket was a common fault on earlier models.
The later models have an extra support bracket added.

You can see it in the top of the right hand corner of the photo.

:agree: . To check, take your upper panel off both sides and the upper right front panel. After dark with the engine running, on the left side check the spark plug wire for sparking to engine or frame, on the right side a small hand mirror and look between the front of the air box and the right side of the engine for sparking. Can't here the ticking when I rev it,starting to think am just being paranoid :L Yeh was speaking to folk on FB and it's a common fault on the 08s so trying to do something with the plastic light holder but not sure if it will work I will check the plugs once it's back together again,thanks again for your help folks

Most times you won't hear electric ticking when you rev to engine, do to there is a higher current at idle. If it is a spark plug wire is the problem don't over fill the gas tank, it may start a fire. That's IMHO.

I've not heard that ticking is a common problem with the Spyder. If it's bothering you, it's probably worth nailing down. Especially if it is an arching wire. But if it needs a cam shim and it's loud enough to hear, that also needs to be addressed.

If it's your imagination... Well, I'm not sure there is a fix for that! :dontknow:

Ok, now we're talking about a common problem. Sorry for the mis-read on my part.

You know we are all waiting impatiently for you to find this annoying Ticking source....

Don't make me have to buy a ticket to Scotland!
