Spewing gas!

My dealer is closed until Tuesday, I'll make an appointment to get it checked out.
If I ride it at all, I will try to keep it full.
I haven't had it very long. It's one of the ones that REEK of gas fumes. Pretty frustrating to say the least.....the dealer says its normal. It's so bad I can't put it in the garage until it dissipates.
These bikes aren't cheap, and I feel it shouldn't smell of gas so bad all the time. I even smell it when I'm driving down the road!
:gaah:
Sorry for the rant.

My wife has a 2012 RT and the fumes are horrible after a ride in warm or hot weather. I too have to leave it in the driveway for an hour or two after a ride or the fumes fill the house. My dealer claims they have never heard of the issue (BS). Can-Am said they would get back to me and never did after couple go- rounds. Hope you have better luck.

Glad no one was injured in your case... that is frightening .

Post a picture of your ST and we'll tell you if you've got the updated airflow panels. I'm thinking that you don't.

Nope, you don't have the airflow panels. Get a complaint filed at your dealer and they'll get it worked out with BRP.

Thanks yall!
I did see online that there are updated panel.......I contacted BRP directly and they opened a case, this was a couple of weeks ago. The original dealer I bought the bike from is 150 miles away......so I switched to a local dealer and set them up as my current dealer.
The one I purchased from said the gas smell was normal.
Hoping the local dealer can resolve the issues.

If you bought this from a Spyder dealer, then in my opinion, it was criminal for him to sell it to you & say all recalls had been done, when the biggest & most serious of all Spyder recalls HAD NOT BEEN DONE.

If you purchased it privately I can understand how the new panels might not have been fitted.

You should most definitely contact steve: [email protected] & give him a full account of what happened.

You could easily have been a human torch, heaven forbid.

I think I am almost as upset & mad as you must be!!!

I would definitely update your dealer and BRP about the issue and let them know that this update process needs to be sped up and dealt with asap.

I would let both of them know the severity of this issue. In your case someone, if not multiple people could have been seriously burned or even burned to death.

PM sent.

Back to the original event for just a second, Billy's diagnosis was spot on. The Spyder gas tank is always vented to atmosphere through the charcoal canister. When the purge valve opens, it simply sucks the vapors into the motor, but the path to atmosphere is still open and there are no valves in the canister to cause blockage. (Dissected it) The only plausible failure that could have held that kind of tank pressure would be the rollover valve - or some say tip over valve - on the tank where the vent line connects, went closed and then the tank pressure kept it closed. Right now it may still be stuck, or maybe it has come open again. A stuck valve is not uncommon in the auto industry and it has happened to other Spyders before this.

Once you get the new panels and can keep tank temperature under control, the valve may work correctly and it may never happen again. Or, you could get it replaced for peace of mind for 35 bucks.

How can you say all the recalls have not been done. Changing out the 2013 panels for 2014 ones for free was a goodwill gesture for those people who complained. It was not a recall.

So the OP does not have the 2014 panels and the OP should try and get them. Great relief for that volcano vent on the left leg. OK

But that does not fix the fuel tank not venting correctly and does not fix a gas smelly machine. Those are separate problems that need to fixed no matter what panels this Spyder has.

Didn't know that.

I assumed it was. My wife tells me never to assume anything. I stand corrected.

However it bloody well should have been a recall. Just my very humble opinion of course.

I was able to find a mobile mechanic that is coming to the house today to see what the heck is going on.
I will let y'all know what he comes up with.
He is certain is an easy and quick fix.....yay!!

i absolutely have every intention of contacting the local dealer I have switched to, and I will be contacting BRP as well. I could have blown up an entire gas station. Being showered with hot gas is scary and am so greatful no one was burned!
my gear my all be ruined due to the intense gas smell.....even tho I washed it 2x.
i just want to ride and enjoy life, not have to worry about blowing up every time I need to get gas.
It definitely was a volatile situation

Hi Dmpsam,

Re: I hope it's a cheap fix

I had my Purge Valve replaced by my local independent mechanic last week; the valve was ~$45.

Good luck,

Jerry Baumchen

PS) It took about 5 minutes to replace it and the two Oetiker clamps; removing the clamps took the most of the time.

Ok.....the mobile mechanic came and I had him bypass that Evaporative canister, like the rest of y'all have done. Cheap enough......cost me 60 bucks plus the few parts. The canister is still on the bike, but he did bypass it for me.
I ran it for a short while, went to the store and back. It was up to temp, ran like the wind, and the gas cap came off without spewing hot gas out.
Mother Nature is being fickle today, and keeps threatening to storm pretty good.
Im anxious to get it nice and hot on a good long ride.
I'll keep y'all informed if anything changes.
Thanks again for all the awesome responses and information! This forum rocks!

The 2013 was not included in the heat fix recall. The 2014 panels are being given to owners of the 2013 has a goodwill gesture, its not a recall. Only the 2013 RT was recalled by the DOT/BRP.

You will never fix they gas smell on any 2012 and prior 998, or the 13 ST. Its an unfortunate part of its return style fuel system that superheats the fuel in the tank. Its not subject to recall like the 2013 RT even though the design is the same.
