• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I am brand new to can am....have a 2013 st limited.
today I went for a ride, was down 3 bars on gas and decided to get some before taking the long route where Gas is hard to come by.
Anyway, pulled to the pump, pop the seat, unscrew the cap and that thing went flying, then HOT gas literally spews out of the tank like a fountain!! :shocked: I was soaked, it spews over the pump and onto the car next to me as well, soaking their car and the poor girl at the pump.
Has anyone else experienced this??
Im feeling thankful no one was really burned bad, and can't believe this didn't catch the entire gas pump on fire!!
I'm no stranger to bikes, been riding for over 20 yrs, just new to can am.

:yikes: No not common Glad no injuries The gas can get hot & has vents to relieve pressure you may have a clog or obstruction need to get checked out. :congrats::welcome:

Yikes...!!

will build up pressure as well as boil the gas. Still will not catch fire unless something ignites it. Your system is plugged and not breathing. Usually you have a tough time getting the cap off when this happens. You should have it checked out and keep the tank full till you do...
 
My dealer is closed until Tuesday, I'll make an appointment to get it checked out.
If I ride it at all, I will try to keep it full.
I haven't had it very long. It's one of the ones that REEK of gas fumes. Pretty frustrating to say the least.....the dealer says its normal. It's so bad I can't put it in the garage until it dissipates.
These bikes aren't cheap, and I feel it shouldn't smell of gas so bad all the time. I even smell it when I'm driving down the road!

Nota rant when you have genuine concern & problems. Hope its gets fixed for you & you can enjoy :spyder2: Like rest of us:doorag:
 
Your experience sounds like the roll over valve is stuck shut and may need to be replaced.

As to your gas smell. Your dealer is full of it. It does not have to stink of gas. Mine does not and never did except for a 2 week period in the fall of 2014. Not sure why because it fixed itself before I really could find out for sure. If it stinks it means that the purge system is not working correctly and your dealer has to figure out why and fix it. BRP has updated the purge system. I installed the new system last winter just to keep it up to date. Tried to get it free in goodwill but no success. If you are still under warranty I would try and get it replaced. The old purge valve is replaced with an assembly that has a new purge valve, filter and check valve. When I replaced mine. It was full of black dust that I assume was carbon from the canister. That to me explains why the filter was added and maybe why the purge valves are failing. See item 32. Old purge valve and new assembly in the square inset.

I forgot got to mention it has no warranty, I bought it used with 3300 miles on it.

I hope it's a cheap fix, but doubt it.

1. Have the 2014 air scoops been put on your st? They would help with the hot gas. You can research them on this forum. You may still be able to get them free.
2. Did you go from low altitude to high, or hot to cold, between cap openings? That with the plunged vent would cause the eruption.

Not sure on the air scoops....have searched, but can't seem to find a photo to tell.
i live in Denver, and went up to the halfway mark at mount Evans. It's definitely a higher altitude. I made the same run once before, but went to the summit,and 2 weeks ago went up pikes peak and back. Never had an issue with spewing hot gas.....never had an issue at all!
And all were between cap openings.
part of me wants to drive it tomorrow and see if it happens again, and the other part of me not no, but hell no.
my brand new shoei neotec helmet reeks of gasoline, even tho I removed all the pads and washed them. And my new jacket reeks even tho it was washed 2x. Over 1200.00 in gear. :banghead:
 
POSSIBLE SOLUTION

Since this may be on your dime ....you may want to consider doing a " canisterectomy " on your 998 V-twin ....that is re-moval of the Charcoal filter completely...... On both my V-twins I put in a "T" fitting and lowered the the Gas over-flowline that fed into the EVAP canister ...... However yours appears to be clogged and it would take quite awhile for the GAS inside to evaporate ( if ever ).........Mike :thumbup:

Hmmm.....I may look into that. Being female I'm a little nervous to tear into my machine......but once I hear what the dealer wants, I'm motivated! Lol.
Dealer charges 250. For oil changes, so I do my own. Was nervous about it tho.

Search "New airflow panels for 2013 st" on this forum. Look at pictures on page 13.
If you do not have the new panels, read all the posts there. You may have to educate your dealer about them. He may not know that he can get them for you, and totally free to you. Be polite but do your homework and be persistent. That is a good price for oil change and service. I pay $350.

After stopping for fuel wait at least 5 minutes before opening the tank. Raise the seat and wait a bit. And unscrew it slowly when you do. I agree that the emission canister sounds like it is clogged to me, too. Heard of that happening before. Elevational change might have made it worse, but definitely something wrong.

interesting read on the boiling gas.....my son swore he heard something boiling the day I brought it home. I didn't hear anything, so I dismissed it. :opps:
I did all my own work on my other bike, but that was minimal......didn't have a bit of trouble with it. I hope this bike won't be a "money pit"......I really like it.

After what happened to you, no rant is long enough.

I wish you well in the education of your dealer. Though it should be him educating the customer not vice versa.
