Slight "surging" feeling

I have a 2012 RTS and sometimes while going down fairly level highways I get the feeling of the bike surging a little. I have a cramp buster on the throttle and know I am holding it steady. Anyone else experience this? I crank the throttle and the feeling goes away. Usually occurs around 50mph or so. And only occasionally. The feeling is very slight.

I thought it was just me

Interesting. This has happened to me a few times as well. I thought it was just me (and perhaps it is), so I will be watching this thread to see if there are others and/or a solution. It is really "slight" as you observed, and mine goes away if you get on the throttle a bit. Same speed and same symptoms, hmmmmmmm.... FYI: 2011 RT-S SM5

Yup....got this too - surging

When my 2012 Spyder RT limited was new, did not notice the surging. Lately, on cruise control, I feel it surging. Maybe I'm just getting too sensitive to the bike. I also notice the vibrations at certain rpm's even with my Smoothspyder Tensioner installed.

Don't know what's causing the surging -- I have about 6300 miles on it and bought it new in March this year. Lots of riding and we really enjoy it. Pro's: FUN, cons: fuel economy, vibrations, high rpm's needed vs. gold wing, etc. Even with all the cons, we really like the bike.

Good luck with your Spyder! :2thumbs:

Me too

I too have had that experience. Usually riding at approximately 50 MPH steady pace. Can speed up a bit and it goes away. Happens with me controlling or with the cruise control controlling. Doesn't happen always, but is annoying when it does. No idea what is causing it...

It's normal. It's the motor running toward the lean end for fuel efficiency. Many bikes do the same. The ecu tries to hit a 14.7 afr. The slight surge is Most noticeable when the load on the motor is minimal (light throttle) but the ecu shoots for the same peramiters during idle and decel too.
Nothing to worry about but can be somewhat annoying.

Bike surge

Just a thought, the surge is most likely due to ECU but could also be from a vacuum leak. When my 2011 RT-s first did it I never gave it a second thought. A few hundred miles later it began to surge right after start up and soon it would surge and then almost die. About 8 months ago it ran very bad and would not idle at all. Dealer was helpful on the phone as trailering it there (150 miles) was not something I wanted to do. We checked the codes and he felt it was the small vacuum hoses that connect to the TB. They are accessible on the left side. One hose was cracked through completely and the other broke off in my hand as I touched it. Went to an auto parts store and purchased the right diameter hose. Measured and cut the new hose to length as best I could determine. Put them on and the bike ran fine. No surge, no high rpm revving after start up. The heat does have an adverse effect on the rubber. That was about 3000 miles ago. I have checked them once since then. Have to remove lots of TW to get to them so I now have extra hose and will just replace them the next time I remove all the TW.

 It's news to me as well...
Perhaps I'll have to have the dealer order me new vacuum lines and have them installed at the next oil change...

This is so odd that someone would bring this up just as I was about to. I also have a 2012 limited and a couple of weeks ago I thought I felt in surging around fifty mph holding steady and riding two up. Didn't think to much about it infact figured it was just me. Then last week I thought I felt it again same speed and two up. Yesterday same, two up fifty mph felt like it was surging. Apply just a little throttle and its gone. It appears to not be a big deal just apply a bit more throttle and all is well I'm just glad that I'm not the only one that felt this and maybe I'm not nuts after all! Regardless of what the wife thinks. But gotta tell ya all. We love this bike.

I have never noticed it with either of my RT's, but then again I seldom ride at 50 mph. Lean surge is pretty common in vehicle with smog engines, though...sometime quite pronounced. My BMW RT does it and even my Ford F-150 does it. It is often more pronounced in hot weather. As long as we have to meet EPA standards it is going to be with us, I'm afraid.

You might want to look at your exhaust pipe gaskets. The OEM go away pretty quickly and I was told years ago that it was causing the surge on my 2008 RS. The right side one is the problem. Replace it with a Honda gasket and remove it as a cause. It probably needs to be done anyway.

I agree, had to replace my exhaust gaskets at 5000 miles and the slight surging and exhaust popping went away. Replaced them with the Honda parts and they have been great!

I feel it when cruise is on and I am going down that highway above 60. I believe it is wind gusts. In the morning when there is no wind I only feel it a little when passing large cars or trucks. In the afternoon when our usual 10-15 mph winds are up, I feel it more.
