Rider explains why the Spyder is not a motorcycle

Yeah, Yaa Know--
I have had a neurological limp for 16 years- Thats Not why I ride a Spyder- Before it" came on" Being active duty I ran 3 miles a day (7 minute Miles!) for Many years!!! I still workout 6 days a week (3 Spinning and 3 Arc Trainer) and being a Vegetarian am In the best shape of my life BUT you wouldn,t know that by seeing me limp around?

Limp OR not I would have bought the Spyder because its GREAT and in my mind Safe enough for me to risk my life on it!! I personally would Not ride on 2 wheels in todays world of Texters and distracted drivers even if I didn,t have a limp because it limits your % of being safe.

Very well said:yes::yes:

If you listen closely, he actually compliments the Spyder. But he does sound like he has a 3rd grade education!

Disclaimer: the first thing to always say is, "To each his or her own, ride your own ride."

That said...

Hey, bikes are fun. GREAT fun. Many of us have ridden bikes, or still ride bikes. Those of us who never have ridden bikes, and only Spyders-- you're missing out. But you probably know that.

But Spyders are fun. GREAT fun. As any of us well know. They don't ride like bikes, but so what?

You know what else don't ride like bikes? ATVs. Snowmobiles. Jet-Skis. Waverunners. Go-Karts. Sidecar hacks. On and on... there are *plenty* of great fun vehicles out there.

Oh, and guess what? *Motorcycles* ride differently from each other, too. Sport bikes versus cruisers versus dual sports versus dirtbikes versus supermotos versus scooters versus... etc., etc.

It's not just a binary choice, "Motorcycle, or car," yet time and again I've read two-wheel riders put it precisely that way, and use that crutch to ridicule the Spyder. A vehicle many of them haven't ridden, or if they have, ridden under circumstances destined to give them a negative impression (i.e., the countersteering-veteran motorcycle rider who spends only 10 miles test riding a Spyder wondering why the "ride sucks so much" :roflblack:).

Alas, this rider voiced the two common Spyder misconceptions I hear most from loyal two-wheel riders:
1. The Spyder is only for riders who can't ride a motorcycle because they're disabled/afraid of dropping it/too old, etc.
2. If it doesn't lean, you might as well just get a car.

To #1, I always respond: at the age of 36 in perfect health I got a Spyder because it's uniquely fun... AND because I can't drop it. :joke: Riding my Spyder in lousy urban terrain, I can stop better than any bike, I can ride over terrain that would drop any bike and laugh inside my helmet wondering what just went under my wheel, and I can keep my dang feet up at every last dang light in a city full of them.

To #2, again, go-karts don't lean, ATVs don't lean, plenty of vehicles that aren't cars don't lean. And they're still more fun riding than cars, no? But unlike those fun vehicles, I can take my Spyder out on the street, like cars and bikes. But unlike a car, I can enjoy the same open-air perch I can enjoy on a bike (and nooo, a convertible is NOT comparable to being atop a bike or a trike, as we all know). But unlike a bike, I don't have to worry about half the things looking to hurt me-- or worse-- on two-wheels, allowing me to concentrate on the OTHER things out there on the road looking to hurt me.

Anyway, I wish I could meet this guy. I'd let him ride my Spyder, and I'd borrow his bike, ignorance would be eradicated, and many smiles would be had, I guarantee! :doorag::D

The only thing I will say about this is, the Spyder rider has a female passenger and the rest don't. Need we say more ????? :doorag:

I forced my way through this video, and found myself shaking my head many, many times. As one of the younger riders here (28), I seem to catch flak from time to time for riding a spyder. I hear the term 'pussy' thrown out in the video, but I find it interesting that no one has said it to my face (The same as this kid didn't say it to the pilot's face in this video). I think mine has a little to do with the combat patches, OIF veteran patches, and Combat Medic insignia adorning my jacket/trike. Who knows.

There was just a bit too much misinformation and ignorance of life in general going on in this video to really make me feel like I got anything from it (aside from a sense of disappointment at the individual).
"It leans out!" Well, yes. Trikes tend to do that, you can't see it on most, due to the axle, but any trike pilot can tell you that the weight shifts to the outside.
"...Disabilities..." Keep hot-rodding your 250cc dirtbike like that, and you'll know all about disabilities. It only takes a second to change a lifetime.
"...Can't pass it on turns..." This is typically an unwise move to begin with, because if you don't know the skill level of the other rider/pilot, you may end up causing an accident.
I could go on, but I think I'm preaching to the choir.

Regardless, I think this is the sort of chap who is bound to run his mouth sometime to someone who isn't going to tolerate it, and lay him in the street next to his bike. I'd adore a video of that. I don't want to see him really hurt, or anything, but I'd love to see some 'physical correction' of his ignorance going on here.

It truly was an interesting video. Young, healthy, risk-taker, as evidenced by his wheelie and reference about Spyders being impossible to pass on a curve, will be irreverent about a safer 'cousin' to the motorcycle. They can't pull a wheelie, nor can they drag a knee...only their knuckles.

I found that his rant about not being able to fully classify the rider as a p**** until he questions the rider about his physical challenges to be most interesting. So let me get this right, if you ride a Spyder, you have to have a physical handicap or a mental one...! And this jerk is the one who wants to make that judgement!

The nice thing is that we don't need their blessing. We didn't buy the Spyder to please or to spite anyone else. We all did it for reasons that are important to us alone.

Let 'em ride and let 'em talk, but let us enjoy our day riding safely and respectfully on whatever we choose. ...Gnirtsnod

For me, it reminds me of the joke about the midget that goes to the bordello...

When the madame asks him "who do you plan on pleasing with that little thing?", he replies "me!".

I don't particularly care what others think about my vehicle. It's what I chose to make me happy and it does a pretty good job of it.

Don't like it? Don't buy it. Want to tell me why it sucks? Go right ahead. Luckily I am secure enough that I really don't care. If you can make a rationale analysis with meaningful insights, I'll listen and exchange ideas if so inclined. If not, I'll ignore you.

Life's too short to care about other's opinions on such trivial matters. The fact that he feels the need to denigrate the Spyder in such an emotional rant tells me his opinion is meaningless to me.

 Well said!

I guess I'm old enough to remember when real bikes were American made and cruisers. Back then this kid and his Japanese 250 dirt bike would have been ridiculed by 90% of the biker public and perhaps chased with a baseball bat by the remaining 10%. Times change, now that more and more folks are staying healthier and living longer more forms of "outdoor" fun are starting to appear on the road. We are a tribal culture even if we think we are modern and advanced. Most young folks have not stretched their independent legs yet and want to stay within their tribal group, in this case for the young comentator, two wheel motorcycles. He feels threatened by anything that is different and that weakens his beliefs that he is part of a superior as opposed to different tribe. As we get older and wiser we understand that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and that all riders or all types, makes and styles of motorcycle make it more enjoyable and interesting for us all. I have ridden motorcycles of all types for the past 35 years. I am a combat vet, been wounded twice and have lost a lot of my strength in my legs as I've gotten older. I have only been on a Spyder for four years and its been 35 years since I was wounded. The only cripple in that Vidieo was the guy on the 250. Lets hope as he gets older he makes a speedy recovery!

He can not only vote, he can procreate. YouTube is 90% worthless drivel and 10% fascinating, educational, entertaining stuff.

The only reason for this video was to upset and he's succeeded based on what I've read here. So, those that think he's an idiot, think again.

He didn't upset me. That was just a bunch on nonsensical babble and his opinion isn't important enough to me to really care. He should stick with his dirtbike.......

Doing a wheel y while following someone and traffic coming in the opposite direction shows a man(?) who should not have been given a liscense to start with. :lecturef_smilie:

Ok, we get it... he's an idiot, we are bigger idiots if we listened and got offended by his crap, and we are all happy with our :spyder2:'s! Next topic, please!

Let's face it. The video gave us some interesting discussion points to brighten up our day on the site. No offense taken, just a bunch of opinions to make the day more interesting.
