North to Alaska Blog

I stayed at a great hotel in Canmore right by the Walmart.

As to a "post-mortem" on NtA-2015, I was thinking the same thing. I've been gathering thoughts, but find my basket is small! I'll start writing them down.

I am so looking forward to what you folks think now that you have completed a true bucket list trip.

What started as a statement by Murphybrown over a year ago, grew into a large number of people jumping on the bandwagon. The number whittled down to the intrepid number of participants, and the planning and packing began.

A great group of people with a common goal in mind...and its looking like everything was pretty much a success. Rain, mud, and minor breakdown glitches don't count for much when the whole trip is considered.

The whole group is to be commended for their stick to it mind set and making things work--regardless of some of the inconveniences. The whole bunch of you are to be congratulated and special kudos to Karyl for making it happen.

We (Linda & Dwayne) feel blessed to have been a part and for the opportunity to meet such great people from all over the country. Linda still says this is the best summer she has had since being in Alaska--and that covers almost twenty years. I second the motion. It was a great experience for us to meet you all.

If William Shatner (Captain Kirk) were here, he might say:

Alaska: The Last Frontier. This was the voyage of the North to Alaska travelers. Their one-month mission: to explore strange new country, to seek out new friends and new towns, to boldly go where only the brave have gone before.

Well Kathy and I are home safe and sound even though a car driver with Kansas plates tried to run us off the road as we entered Minnesota. Kathy was driving and as she was passing in the left lane with our front tire even with his passenger door he came over. Kathy had to take the left shoulder and slam on the brakes to avoid the collision. I do believe that he knew that we were there, but did not care.

Arrived home at 6:30 with a pizza and movie in hand to wind down. Kathy took the dirty duds down to the Landry room in the basement while I carried stuff in.
She came up and kissed me and said welcome home our basement is flooded.
Turns out that last week there were some heavy storms and power was out.

No problem as I have a battery backup sump pump along side my main sump pump. As luck would have it both stopped working.

So our nice finished basement now has water from corner to corner and I had to make a fast run to Home Depot for a new sump pump. Kathy made the call to our insurance company and I called a company to have them come out and clean up and remove all the carpet. There rep will be out tomorrow to look it over

Surprises are not always good ones!

Tomorrow will be busy as I also need to service and clean the Spyder.

Oh that really sucks Les. So much for a day of rest before you head back to work.

We came home to water running across our driveway and our dog sitter said it had been that way for a few days. Our neighbor said, no, it had been that way the entire time we were gone. Got my water bill today it was $170, normal is $30. I guess he didn't think it was odd enough to pick up the phone and call us! :banghead: The same neighbor sent me text messages to tell me the dog sitter was out till 2:30 am one night but neglected to tell me that I was watering the entire neighborhood.

Ann,

it's good to have neighbors that watch out for you:shocked:.

Sorry to hear that this happened! Our neighbors were watching our place also, but I never asked them to check on the basement and looking down the stairs you could not tell as the carpet did not look wet until you stepped on it.

Hi Les and Kathy,

I am glad you made it home safely! So sorry to hear about the surprise in your basement with the flooding!! :gaah:

We attended yesterday's MN Spyderlovers ride at Caswells in which we were in the Kanabec County Parade at Mora - only 11 Spyders attended yesterday and you guys were missed!

Good luck with your home, insurance, cleaning, etc.!

Again, glad you made it back from your epic trip safely!:clap::clap:

I'm glad you're home safe and sound, even though your house is less than sound. Next time you pay your homeowners insurance bill, remind yourself you're glad you had it.

Time for a new house-sitter?

Patti, he technically is a dog sitter, I guess we have to pay him more to be a house sitter too.

I did the oil and filter change today. 8500 miles on this trip. I also changed the air filter and was surprised it was not plugged considering all the dust we went through. I still need to fully wash the bike and trailer, but that will need to wait.

Update on the wet basement.
Turns out we needed to have a rider for sump pump failure so not covered. Will cost around $3000 to have them come out and remove the flooring and dry wall about 3' up and spray a mold killer. They are to be out tomorrow to start on it. After that we will need to replace it all.

We are off to start the process of hauling stuff out of the basement. Sadly a number of my LP's took on water and a lot of them are collector items and not replaceable :banghead:

Sorry to hear about the insurance stuff and the loss of some of the collectibles.

The LPs themselves won't be hurt, but the album covers may well be shot. Was the value to you in the LP itself or the entire package as a collectible? If the latter then that really will be a loss. If the former give them a good cleaning and they'll be as good as the day they got wet. The labels on the LPs may even survive in decent shape.

I'm so sorry to hear that about your basement. Sounds like you've got a lot of work ahead of you.

Joe had his bike serviced last week and his air filter was not too bad either. I plan to check mine too but first I need to put on a new rear tire. My mechanic has been busy.

Kathy and Les I am so disappointed that your damage was not covered. That just sucks.
NTA is officially over. Dave, Joni and I leave Canmore in the morning. I'll be home by Weds. Dave and Joni still have a good week of ryding to get home .

Robin and Tom should be home by Wednesday. Dave and Joni will be the last ones home.

It's 11:20 our time and I have to be up at 4:00am for work so I am calling it a night. We did get most of our stuff out of two of the basement rooms. I will just have to pay the workers for their time as I am out of my time and my knees will not take another set of steps.

I hope everyone else had as good a trip as Kathy ad I did and that the remaining members arrive home safe and sound without any unpleasant surprises!

I went from Casper, Wyo., to Cozad, Neb., yesterday. I'll get home today. I took US26 from south of Casper to Ogallala. There was a constant strong wind from the east and when I got off I-25, it was mostly a head wind. It was sunny and I even put my sheepskin seat cover on in the morning. But as I approached Bridgeport, Neb., there were dark clouds in front of me, so I stopped at a station and put on my rain gear and replaced the sheepskin with the seat rain cover. Sure enough I rode right into the rain.

The temperature dropped from mid-90s to high 60s. At first it wasn't too bad, except for the wind gusts. More than a few times I felt like it would blow me off my seat. Then the wind got stronger and the rain heavier. I went through a little "grain elevator" town and there was a huge quonset hut building (big like an airplane hangar) with wide open doors and I considered ducking into those doors to get some relief from the wind, but I didn't and kept on. I don't know if it was sleet or hail or just rain, but it felt like it was raining needles on my left shoulder. Then it got so dark and thick the visibility was only about 6 car-lengths. Suddenly I saw the tail-lights of a bob-tail semi tractor and just keep pace with him. Finally, just like I could see the storm clouds way ahead I saw blue sky up ahead. Temps went back up to the 90s, the wind was almost as bad, but was blowing dust and chaff from the fields. I breathed much easier when I got to Ogallala on I-80.

Joe, my water-proofing on my boots did its job! My rain suit mostly kept me dry, except for my butt.

Mostly on familiar territory today and can't wait to be home.
