North to Alaska Blog

Put a new Arachnid rear tire on for SpyderAnn. Then, Ready for more adventures!

I assume one of the new 35004's with the higher load rating. That'll be a great back-to-back comparison with the S-Drive on the Alaska trip, although I guess all that was with a trailer. She'll have more miles on that new tire even quicker than Lamont! Waiting to hear what she thinks of it.

Yokohama

Joe, I don't remember what tire was put on Ann's Spyder pre Alaska, but curious which one and what was the mileage on it.

Gary
Yokohama S drive. Pretty smooth at 9000 and some change.
Gypsy, Yes, I think it is the latest and greatest. IDK - we go thru them so quickly, hard to remember which is on there!

YAY

I got home mid-afternoon yesterday. My dog remembered me! Happy to be here. After I do laundry and unpack, I'm wondering where to go next! . . . Maybe I should check my credit card bills first.
Glad you made it! Sleep soundly in your own bed, then look at bills. Otherwise, nightmares! Joe

Actually it is one that they sent me last October, it is the 80H load rating but I don't know where you find that 35004 #. I looked but didn't see it anywhere. They sent me this one a few days to late for my cross country trip in October then they sent me a different one, probably the 35004, and I put that on earlier this year. It only lasted about 8,000 miles so I don't expect that this one will go any further.

The Arachnid handles great but it does not wear any longer than a Kenda. I generally put most of my miles on pulling the trailer.

If you made it home there is still enough room on your credit card to go at least another tank full! Was your dog pissed at you? Mine still sticks really close and gets very unhappy when I put on my boots.

She was happy to see me - couldn't hold her licker! She doesn't act bothered that I was gone, probably because there are other people in the household to give her attention. I think she thinks she's my dad's dog. She watches for him whenever he's gone during the day. I don't know if she does that when I leave. I think it's because I come and go and he usually stays home.

It was the Yokohama S Drive and I got about 8,600 miles out of it

Interesting. The 80 load rating is certainly a new tire, not the 68 of the previous version. But Lamont just got his and said they just became available. I talked with Vee's tech people and they said the same thing. They were not aware of any pre-production versions that were made available to anyone for consumer testing and definitely not as long ago as last fall. The model # is on the paper that's glued to the tread of the tire. If that's gone, I don't know either how to ID it. The pedigree of the current Vee you just installed, from last fall, is baffling, at least to me. But the load rating is certainly the key and you're good there. The build date on mine, which came direct from Vee, is 1915 so it's certainly a recent build -- first week of May. The last Vee you ran, which was actually the newest one, did about the same as the S-Drive mileage-wise. Give or take. Which is also the same as you've gotten from Kenda. Do I have that right? Sorry we're off topic here. Maybe a new Vee thread is needed to get all this straight.

Well, we made it home sunday, biggest problem was how to learn to ride in sunshine and warm temps,HA,HA. as was beautiful weather from Dawson Creek to home. Everything was good at home. My rear tire had wore down 2/32 of an inch in the 7,000 miles we traveled and the tire has 17,000 miles and still has 5/32 tread remaining from the 10/32 new. It is the Michelin Hydroedge. We sure missed the group and disapointed it had to end, had a great time. Thanks again Karyl.
Roger & Linda

North to AK is officially over...my musings as I was scrubbing off dirt

The Great:
The people..first Gary & Karen, Dwayne & Linda for all their input on the planning of this grand adventure.
Then the 15 brave folks that said "heck yes we are in" and joined me on this adventure. Seriously they did not know what to expect. They came from as far away as NY, MN, AZ, KS, Saskatchewan, NV, Manson, WA (lol)..to head out North to AK on 6/29.
.as soon as we crossed the border there waiting to lead us were Gary & Karen..the roads they took us on were to whet our appetite for the bigger and better that would come.
More great people were all that I worked with to make reservations...with this many folks traveling together I decided that prearranged living was a must.
So yes the people get the :firstplace:
Also GREAT was our Spyders...thousands of miles and some not so good miles of construction mixed in and other than attracting every dirt molecule known to man..the Spyders ran like champs. Never lost a tire, belt or tupperware. Had a couple glitches but found a great dealer in Eagle River that moved our people to the front and got the issues taken care of: Dave was throwing codes..when Dave, Joni, Ann & Joe stopped at the Anchorage dealer and the tech didn't even know where or how to find battery/fuses on the '14...they beat a hasty retreat and Dwayne says right here in Eagle River...awesome dealer. For Dave's Spyder the tech pulled a part off of a display engine..issue solved. Roger & Les had simple fixes...Robin's Spyder needed a little tweak from the repair done on way to WA and Tom needed/wanted a new battery. My broken support occured the last leg of my journey and Banner in Kelowna immediately solved my problem...they could not fix and I wasn't willing to wait a week for Quebec to get part to them..so they sent me to a welder dude and in 1 hour repaired better than new.
Also GREAT was the wonders of the country we drove through and tried to fully take in. Thanks to Robin and others there are some great pics posted.
Also Great was the attitudes of the merry band of adventure seekers. Think about it that many folks getting right close and :yikes: could have been...but it was not. Heck no one even complained about day after day of rain...It was always as we were getting ready to head out for the day...hey, what you think start in rain gear?

The Good:
Actually the roads as a whole were good. I do believe except for those big trucks throwing big rocks that the Dalton Highway (Haul Road) would have been passable for our Spyders.
The weather I put as good...holy cow it could have been sooooo much worse....and those areas that were low visibility just gave me a reason to put back on the active "visit" list.
Gas, never an issue with good planning...some of the folks were carrying extra gas, just in case, but never needed.

The Bad:
All that dirt in every personal and machine crevice and more. As an example it took me 7+ hours to clean trailer. Spyder has had 2 washings and thinking #3 should just about get Studly looking presentable. I gave up on counting hours to clean the Spyder..
For those of us that our USA credit cards would not work in Yukon/Canada gas machines..Meant we had to leave card with clerk...pump gas...go back...
Finding gas stops with only 1 older vintage gas pump...but seems we always found someone to talk to or they wanted to talk to us (or check our temperatures to see if we had lost our minds!!)

The Ugly: Me trying to zip up my jeans after eating with abandon for a whole month!!!:yikes::banghead:

Some other thoughts: Of the special things...nothing tops Dwayne & Linda being our tour guides for 4 very special rydes and then the amazing meal Linda prepared for the whole group .. I also said repeatedly that those folks that had to head home early, basically after Denali, sure missed a lot. [but as a side note..I was thankful they went home and back to work so that those of us remaining could continue to receive our social security checks...thanks guys!!)
If your budget allows you to take "side trips". Of the ones we did I highly recommend Prudhoe Bay; Glacier/fjord tour; I put a thumbs down on the all day Denali tour. And Chena Hot Springs got a passing mark. Muktuk B & B a must experience. Nothing better than 5 people sleeping in an open loft with one inside and one outside toilet!!
Cost: Budget I set for gas, food, lodging was $200 (US) per day. I actually averaged $193.16...so pretty good guess on my part. Any of the side trips were on top of that as well as the need for postcards, shirt or other souvenirs.

Folks these are my closing thoughts. Sure hope the others that traveled North to Alaska will post theirs. It was a mighty fine adventure and would encourage any and all to go North to Alaska and enjoy Canada & Yukon on your way through.
Oh yea...Dave & Joni are still working their way back to NY...

Many thanks for the G, B & U

This credit card thing happens to me all the time at gas stations in the USA with my Canadian Visa. I get used to it, but don't like it. We're in LV soon & they are the worst of anywhere.

I was glad I had the chance to cross paths with the group in Eagle River. It was good to see people I knew and meet some new people. I probably won't fly to Alaska again in my life but driving is not out of the question once the wife retires.

Karyl, thanks for your after action report. I was changing my rear tire and had another opportunity to get more of the dirt off my Spyder but I know there is more hiding in places that I haven't looked. I think that if we had hit sunshine and good roads all the way we wouldn't have felt as adventuresome as we did. There was something really cool about riding down a muddy road in the rain, dodging potholes while wiping the mud from your face shield that made you think about the early settlers and what they must have experienced. If you can't stand to see your Spyder filthy then this trip isn't for you, or you will need to pull out the hotel room garbage can and give it a little bath each night like Roger did.

Karyl, you must have forgotten that the only person to actually run out of gas was our gas stop planner, Les. :roflblack: If anyone is planning this trip just remember that you don't pass up a station unless you know for sure where the next station is.

I agree with you Karyl on the all day Denali tour, it was just too long and I know that you can see all of the wildlife on the other shorter tours.

For anyone who is fearful of taking their Spyders on long trips you shouldn't be.

Next big adventure? How about the Owner's Event in Valcourt in 2017. Are you in?

Ann,

Are you the group planner for this one!

Les

I could be. I'm planning on heading north from Las Vegas to Canada then east from there. Maybe even go all the way to Newfoundland, do they have any roads there? Scratch that, I mean New Brunswick and Nova Scotia then I'll hit Maine and New Hampshire and come back from there. We could go by Dave & Joni's in Buffalo then around the mitten of Michigan, maybe take the old ferry across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin. I want to go to Bemidji on the way home.

Are you in?
