• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Key Duplication

Mixed? Maybe not...:dontknow:
Billy described the differences and the different reasons, for cloning a key, versus having one programmed...
I can't think of a reason why cloning wouldn't work... but I'm no expert! :D

but I'm no expert! Bob, glad you clarified that. :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

Well that should tell us if the chip has changed.

:yikes: I almost wish that I hadn't heard that...

We'll see just how honest this guy is...

I see no reason for this guy to BS you. From what I understand as soon as he drops your key in the machine he will know if it will work or not. If the chip has changed maybe he has a different key blank that will match the chip.

Whatever happens I am counting on you to pump him for info!! :roflblack::roflblack:

 If it works; we should know in a bit over a week and a half... I've got to get to a place that can cut the key for the ignition, once I get it back from him.
If it doesn't work  ; perhaps by next Wednesday?

On the 2014 RT there is a option to duplicate a key that was not available through BUDS before. There is no master key for the 2014, it's all done through BUDS and the key is NOT the same as the 2013 and below, it has to be the key for the 2014.

:dontknow::dontknow:, my parts guy says the bike has to be hooked up to make a key now.

That is the way that they made a duplicate key for me on my 2008 - my original key, master key and newly cut spare key.

If you buy your key from someone else, the dealers cannot charge you the SUPER inflated costs.

It cost me $45 for a duplicate - another dealer wanted to charge me $150. I was charged 0.1 hours of labor to cut and program key. I had to shop around to find a dealer that would not rip me off. And funny thing happened after I purchased my key from that dealer - he got my spyder back to fix my steering issue that was causing my spyder to stall at the drop of a hat. They fixed it - I'm a happy ryder again. Since they did not rip me off on the key - he gets my spyder to work out the mechanical issues. Win-win.

Here is a scenerio.
A thief has the following:
- blank 2014 key
- BUDS software
- lock picks (to make the tumblers fall into proper position)
- your 2014 RT

Can they take off with your 2014 RT? Because the BUDS software will make the RT recognize the chip in the blank 2014 key, the lock picks can be used to set the tumblers in the right spot and turn it to the "ON" position?

When I had a new key programmed (for a 2008), they needed my original key, a master key and BUDS program (I think the software was needed). I watched the tech switched between my key, the master key and the new key.

As far as I know you still need one good key to make another clone key with buds.

Confused

Master? Cloned? Sheesh I'm having a senior moment.

Will I be getting 2 ready to use keys with my new 2014 RT Limited?

Yes. The discussion is actually about two things. If you want more keys for your spyder there are a couple of ways to do it. For 2013 and below, you can buy blank CanAm keys, have them cut the same as your present key, then get a dealer or someone with a master key to program them to be recognized by your byke. All keys have to be programmed at the same time and you can only have 4 keys programmed. For 2014 the master key is no longer used, the keys have to be programmed using BUDS. I don't think the restriction to 4 is effect anymore, I checked BUDS and it shows up to eight.

The other option is cloned keys. There are some other threads out there with links to purchase some blank Aprila keys that use the same chip as the CanAm. You can have them cut the same as your CanAm key and then cloned off that key by a place that can clone transponder keys. I had mine done at an ACE hardware. When cloning keys there is no limit on the number you can have.

I bought two of the Aprila blanks from one of the links on SL. Have been to two local Ace stores and two big box hardware stores. One Ace and one of the big box stores refused to even try to clone the keys. The other two tried but could not read the Can-Am key. So I wonder if the 14 key has changed, new chip or something?
Most likely. Something must have changed. I just compared part #'s between the '13 and '14 RTs. The ignition switch module, the DESS module, and the key, all have different part numbers for 2014.

My guess is that the JMA Aprilla key we used for '13 and earlier will not work for '14. But then again, the key may still be functionally the same if they just changed something like the shape, color, or something like that. Does anyone see any difference at all between the '13 key and '14 key? The quickest way to get an idea is ask the parts guy to look up part # 710001211. If it comes up as superseded by part # 710003596 then either they are functionally the same, or the new one is backwards compatible but the old is not forward compatible.

The game of outfoxing BRP and the dealers starts all over again! :banghead:
