How much will it help to wrap the exhaust pipe going into cat/primary muffler?

I am about to replace my cat with an RLS cat delete that is ceramic coated. While researching this project, I've seen a lot of talk about heat control and abatement, including wrapping exhaust headers and pipes.

I'm not good enough to get deep into the engine, but it appears that I could fairly easily remove the pipe coming from the header right below the stock heat shield, running under the bike to the primary muffler, and wrap it. At least I see the clamps on each end, and can get to them.

So I think I could remove and wrap this pipe "fairly easily"... unless I missed seeing a bracket or hanger somewhere. I would wrap it from just end to end, stopping just inside both clamp flares.

But... will this be worth it? I see the existing heat shield , which I assume comes down from the exhaust header itself, and dumps a lot of heat out the bottom of into the chamber pictured, and I'm not sure this will mitigate any of that.

Thoughts and advice?

Just removing the cat will reduce the radiated heat. Not sure how much more the wrap will help.

Hey Allen. Heat wrap was a thing for the 998 engine in the RT, especially before the scoop mod was created by BRP. So, I bet you're reading a lot about that engine. The 1330 though, not so much of an issue. If heat still bothers you after you remove the cat, the scoop mod will serve you better than wrapping the exhaust. But, wait and see how things feel, first. A forum search about the scoops will tell you all you need to know.

Removing the cat will reduce your heat greatly. Wrapping your pipe will reduce exhaust noise some as well as heat reduction. But I don't think your going to notice unless you're stuck in stop & go traffic. As mentioned, it made a great deal of difference on my 998 V-Twin.

Thanks guys. I haven't seen a vote yet for "do it", so I don't believe I will. You guys are awesome.

" Do It " I did mine when I removed the CAT, .... " heat wrap " isn't expensive, it will quiet the pipe a little, it will help scavenge the exhaust, and it wasn't difficult .... your call ....Mike

The Basalt wrap can be a wonderful method to reduce unwanted heat.
It is not without drawbacks.
Generally accepted, it needs to remain dry for longest life. Wet wrap is also know to promote corrosion of the exhaust tubes.

If installing on thin walled tubes, the contained heat can promote erosion of the tube, or induce cracks.

Granted many Spyder owners did wrap exhausts with acceptable results.

One of the aircraft I maintained, it did have wrapped exhausts. The result was cooler under cowl temps, but realize also, these were straight pipes, all 6 of them.
Ultimately though, as the wrap deteriorated, all 6 pipes were removed and sent to Jet Hot. Jet Hot properly coated both the inside and outside of each pipe. That was the best setup.

Even with wrapped pipes, I would still get burns around the hot engine. With the Jet Hot coated pipes, within a minute after shutdown, the exhaust could be touched.

They didn't have a Spyder in their gallery, but I did put in for a quote. I could see this having a major impact of felt heat at slow speeds.

Jet Hot probably has even better stuff now.

I know, a lot more work and cost, but consider sending the bypass and mid pipe. Super easy to remove.

Mac Daddy setup would be pulling the three primary pipes, and do them all.

Hopefully the cost is reasonable. You might need to actually call and get an idea on what they recommend.

I used the Titanium Header wrap on my '18 RTL when I replaced the cat with Baldwin Iron Work's Cat delete and wrapped all the way forward, so both the cat delete and "tuned Pipe" that's forward of the cat. Reduced heat at the ankles and lower legs, though I'm one of those crazy people that ride in shorts and walking shoes.
