Hot Weather Gear

With apologies to you Northerners, hot weather is not too far away for those of us in the South. When it is 90 degrees and humid, what do you guys wear to cover you legs? Do you switch from a full face to a half face helmut?

I should probably wear more, but I pretty much wear jeans and boots all year round.

For a jacket I wear a mesh jacket with armor with the liner out in the summer time. It still gets pretty unbearable at long lights but once at highway speed, you're not too miserable. I also invested in a small vest you wear under your mesh jacket that you soak in water first and wring it out. Under the mesh it acts like a mini air conditioner and keeps your core body a few degrees cooler. High humidity like here in Texas or Florida reduces that effect.

For gloves, I switch from winter weight to summer weight mesh with armor across the knuckles. They are cool but provide good protection.

For helmet I stick with my modular HJC Symax II helmet. With my Cal-Sci windshield I can run with the visor up and the sun visor down and get a nice breeze on my face. I don't feel safe enough without a full face granted modular is not as strong.

Hope that helps. Keep cool

We ALWAYS cover legs - they are vulnerable to road crumbs!

In hot/humid weather, we have the Joe Rocket mesh suits, which work pretty well. I have worn them over shorts in 100+ but sand still gets thru. One hot day in 06 I had my Roadcrafter on. Glad I did after sliding across asphalt and concrete.

Had my full helmet on, too. It got trashed - I would look VERY different these days had I not had the chin guard.

It's not hot here yet but it's almost April so hopefully we'll be seeing some warmer weather coming soon! :2thumbs:

it gets in the 90's and very humid during part of the summer in CT. I'll wear a shorty helmet, jeans, tank top. I do have a mesh jacket and used to wear it but sitting at stop lights with no breeze, forget it.

Then we we stop at rest areas I take my tank top and put it under the faucet and soak it and put it back on so I have a little bit of a cool ride until the next rest stop.

I don't like a whole lot of sun so I won't wear shorts but w/ the tank top, I'll put on major sunscreen on my arms and all over my face.

summer attire.

I do my best to wear my mesh motorcycle jacket throughout the summer. Not always able to do so but I give it my best shot.
Jeans in the summer. Never shorts.
Always wear boots.
Half helmet.

ATGATT - For summer that means a mesh jacket and pants with armor over shorts and a T-shirt. If it is really hot I switch to lightweight long pants and also wear a cooling vest. Helmet stays the same for summer, I just open more vents. I switch to lighter weight gloves with no gauntlet. As strange as this may sound. If it is "too hot to ride" I often wear long underwear beneath my mesh suit instead of other light weight clothes. It wicks better and ultimately keeps you cooler and dryer. I also put the cooling vest in the refrigerator before riding too. You do need to bring some other clothes along if you have plans to do anything that involves you taking your riding gear off. :yikes: nojoke I don't often use it but there are various evaporative cooling devices that go around your neck. Major blood vessels travel close to the surface there and it is a great place for heat exchange. The simplest of course is a wet bandanna. You can also buy tubular gel packs that are kept in the refrigerator or freezer and go around your neck. They are more effective in humid environments.

When it's hot I just were baggy pants or jeans. I still use a full face helmet, GMAX has lots of vents, but I have the visor up sometimes. I also go for white or light colored helmets then.

Jeans and T-shirt with 1/2 helmet for me when it's hot--- sometimes shorts.

On 2 wheels I wouldn't even consider shorts--- but on the Spyder I sometimes do wear them.

The 1/2 helmet makes a big difference in enjoyment for me--- but I realize the protection is nowhere near a full face. Good chance in 2011 that Michigan will repeal the mandatory helmet law--- and I have been known to ride without sometimes. It really does feel great-- and you can see much better.

Not safe, not smart -- but I'm rarely accused of such things....;).

Do what you're personally comfortable with.

That's a perfect description of what I wear, including the HJC modular helmet. Being a little further north and west of San Antonio our humidity is less and the cooling vest works really well. I'm still on two wheels until my Spyder comes in but I don't expect to change what I wear. Smylinacha, if you like the wet tank top, you would love a cool vest. It takes a LOT longer for the water to evaporate.

I haven,t seen summer on the :spyder2:yet so I,m going to have to see a Therapist :yikes:to help me decide?:roflblack:

When I first started riding my spyder, I was sure I was going to be one of those very safe All Gear All the Time folks. I discovered I am not quite that safe. On hot days, I have been known to wear my jeans, boots and a t-shirt and this year I even invested in a half helmet. Yes, I understand the risks!! I am an EMT and have been on my share of motorcycle accidents. I did discover crossing the salt flats in Utah that long sleeves were actually cooler than my t-shirt though. I was just baking out there. I also believe if they repeal the motorcycle helmet law in Michigan, there may be even times when I will make that quick ride to the store without my helmet. I don't know for sure, but I'll bet I will. I am not suggesting that anyone else ride this way, I am just answering the question. When it is really hot out, I ride as comfortable as I can be. Not looking for a debate or a lecture, just being honest.

Too many visits to the asphalt, and first aid for others who did, to be the least bit comfortable riding without protective gear, especially touring on the highway. I have worn jeans, but I am not comfortable that way, even on a Spyder. Mesh jacket and pants (sometimes over a wet t-shirt and some shorts), full face helmet, short deerskin work gloves, and boots for me. Nancy does the same. After wearing full leathers or a 3-15 firesuit during the summer at the race track, nothing is too hot.

In 1967, I wore cutoffs once and after a bee went up my left leg, I had to pull over fast on Rt 9 in CT and strip down. Since than I have always worn jeans, boots, long sleeve shirt, vest, helmet, summer gloves, with rap around sunglasses.

Here on FL Panhandle, it's hot and humid at lights with the heat from the bike, pavement and sun beating down but, not as bad as it gets in Southern FL. After this mornings and afternoon ride in the colder than normal temps and the wind, I'm looking forward to temps in the 70s before getting into the hot, humid summer weather, that will most likely show up the following day.

On hot days, I put a small cooler of bottle water in the trunk and when I get too hot, I pull over and take off the helmet and pour a couple of bottles of ice cold water over my head, soaking me and my bandana and drink another.

I have a pair of Cortech riding jeans and mesh jacket and Tourmaster gel mesh gloves for summer ryding. A pair of mesh pants would be great to have also, may be my next investment. I actually tried shorts on the spyder in July '08 but the engine heat and sun was unbearable, never again. I keep cooler with the mesh jacket than a t-shirt. Don't like being sunbaked when ryding all day.:sour:

hot weather gear

from a TRUE NORTHERNER, no offense taken.during the week, always with a good pair of boots , jacket and gloves, flip up open face helmet, complete with harley davidson safety/sun glasses. during the weekend same thing except a good pair of hiking boots. spring is a coming to this part of the world, getting plus temps and actually saw 4 bikes today, one on the highway ( enduro style ) 2 bigger bikes ( harley i think ) and a crotch rocket close to home, not sure if these folk are brave, hurried or just plain stupid , with all the melting going on, not to mention the sanded/dusted roads... I am more than excited to get out and ride but not worth that kind of hassle....:2thumbs:

Stay hydrated first of all. If you not have to use a restroom and are not thirsty. Drink.

Safety Meeting today, rode, 25 degree to start. "Dress to crash not to ride". Or on a bike, I ride with, " I would rather sweat then bleed."
My Opinion, of course
