Got a speeding ticket yesterday...

And it ruined my perfect driving record. crap.
$100 fine by a Mass State Trooper.

I dont know if my insurance will go up because of it. I was in the left lane trying to pull past a truck and trailer that was infront of me and he just moved to the center lane.

I'm so pisted at myself.:banghead:

How fast did they get you for?
Most insurance companies won't ding you for the first "minor" ticket... "Minor" being defined as a speeding ticket of less than fifteen over..., a failure to yield, or a stop sign violation.
Can you negotiate it down if it doesn't fall into this category?
Good Luck, and talk to "Fly"...

:cus:That stinks!!! Where were you when you got the ticket? I'm from just outside of Boston, too and want to avoid the area when I go for a cruise later on.

"RT-S # 352; Timeless Black... faster then any other color."

It's ticket gettin fast!

:joke: :doorag:

Sorry you spoiled your perfect record. I'm very careful in Mass. Besides, I think the Spyder is an eye magnet. Much more likely to notice one compared to a regular motorcycle or car. Hope it doesn't mess up your insurance.

I am not an attorney nor am I giving legal advice but on a few occasions when I have felt there were circumstances such as you describe, I have gone to court and requested to plead Nolo Contondre.

See details here http://criminal.lawyers.com/Criminal-Law-Basics/No-Contest-Pleas-Nolo-Contendere.html

This option is open to you in Mass. if the judge accepts it. You could still get fined but you are not charged as being guilty of the offense.

Worth a try. I would always go to court on traffic violation charges just to see what can be worked out.

ALWAYS fight speeding tickets ... 9 times out of 10 you can get a deferral... which means you pay the ticket plus some extra like $50... agree to get no tickets during the next 6 months... or take some online driver safety class for $50... and they take the points away.

Doesn't hurt to pursue it.

Whatever you do... DO NOT sign the ticket and admit guilt..... then you're done.

:agree: All they want is the money, If nobody sped they would have to raise tax's to make up for the lost income nojoke

Yeah, well maybe. In some places the revenue from enforcement is more important than the enforcement itself. On the otherhand, I like it when there are cops around when someone passes me at a gazillion miles an hour, swerving between lanes. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that we need to give credit, too, for the safety that enforcement brings.

me too

did the same thing several weeks ago. had perfect record for twenty five or thirty years. i feel your pain. i felt better after a week.

:agree:Oh, I'm always careful whenever I'm out and about. The Spyder does stand out like a sore:cus:!

TICKETS

I don't make any guarantee's....but if you have the opportunity to ask for a jury trial ( and some juristictions allow this ) you may want to try this....Jury trials are very very expensive and unless your ticket is worth a $1000 or so they may be more willing to cut you a deal....Don't tell anyone I said this.....?...signed Unknown

I got one several years ago. Same thing, perfect record, was passing a broke down school bus when another driver came out of a driveway and I had to punch it to keep from hitting him. Trooper gave me a hard time, said I was speeding on his road. He wrote the ticket for 69 in a 55. Anyway, gave it to a lawyer. Still cost me $250.00 but he got it reduced to 60 in a 55, no points and no record. Had I gone before the judge, it would have cost me $400.00 plus 5 points and raise in insurance. That was 1993 and I haven't had a ticket since.

The State trooper wrote the ticket for 80+ in a 55. I'm not sure exactly how fast I was going, only becuase I was concentraiting on getting past a truck that was trailering a bike and I dont always like to sit in the left high speed lane.

I could fight it, but he also did mark down that it was clocked.
I did get a failure to stop at a red light about two years ago, that only digned me for my "safe driver" points. But this ticket may actually ding my insurance.

The statie did say, allways look in your rear view mirrors, especially if one of these is behind you... he pointed to his car.

Is it still worth the $50 in hearing costs to "fight"?

Could have been worse

Of the three speeding tickets I've been issued in over 50 years of driving, the first one is the most memorable. Because at the time ('73) California law (unknown to me before getting the ticket) mandated that exceeding the posted speed limit by thirty miles per hour was automatic jail time. No fine - three days in the RCOJ (Riverside County Jail) - bowl and roll was on the house. :roflblack:

Life happens ;)

I always plea not guilty when i get a speeding ticket. I know in NY they always reduce the fine.

You really don't need to pay for a lawyer just show up and the DA usually will reduce it for you. Especially in NY. If you get charged for a moving violation the fine now goes to the state and the town you got the ticket in only gets the surcharge. If the town reduces that fine to a non moving violation the town gets the money for the entire fine plus surcharges.

Like someone just posted its all about the money.

This is probably one of the few times we benefit off of greed

:agree: I Always keep an EYE on how fast the traffic is going behind me. If there Tooo slow and Not whizzing by me there is a GOOD chance that the presence of a LEO is Probable?:yikes:

YES. With your previous good driving record you can simply tell them you really want to continue your clean record, explain that you were indeed passing a truck and trailer that were buffetting you with a lot of wind.. and let them know how such winds affect the Spyder....blah blah blah.....ask them if you can get some kind of deferral. You can do this without even going to court.

My last one I got in Indiana... handled the whole thing over the phone. I had already pled not guilty and mailed the ticket in... received the court date via mail from them.

I then mailed them a Discovery Request asking for many items related to the case. Chances are they will get the idea you know a thing or two about fighting your case and not want to jump through all the hoops and do all the work... so they'll offer a deferral instead. That is what happened to me. Here is a sample of a Discovery Request.. you can just change and fill in the various things needed.....

Make it look as legal and formal as you can.
