Communication system????

CRUCIFIED

New member
As many of you know my wife is handicapped and I am working on mods for the spyder to enable her to be a passenger. She has MS with very little leg function due to severe nerve damage. One of the other serious issues is fatigue. I need to find a way to be in constant communication with her when we eventually get to ride. My question is this, does anyone know of a good and fairly inexpensive system to use with two full face helmets? I know absolutely nothing about this topic and have no idea what would be needed to pull this off. Standard equipment, accessories...etc I would also like to be able to share my ipod music with her as well, if this is at all possible.

Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Depends on what you want but you can go wired with JB and other solutions others talk about or wireless with the Cardio Q2s or Q4s. The Q2s are dropping prices since the Q4s just came out. I love my set, the FM is OK most of time in town but not very good when out on the highway. The person to person comm rocks and plenty load enough at even 90 MPH.

I have Scala Rider Q2's and love them. They are simple to operate and have good sound. My wife (who has trouble changing the TV channel with a remote .. read "non-technical") can operate it just fine.
A neat feature of this set up is that they will work even if you get off the bike as long as you have your helmet on. (Like when you walk into a store for a minute)
You can do other stuff with them (like phone calls or GPS and they have a built in FM radio)
I just use them for intercom but I am 100% happy with them.
They can be bought for around $250 for a pair.

I agree with RShrimp and others. We also use the Scala Rider Q2 and are completely satisfied with them. My wife had some trouble breaking the VOX initially until I convinced her that the mike needed to be really close to her mouth, then it was fine. I'm including an ebay link to the seller I bought from. Their price is currently $223.00 with free shipping. You may find them cheaper somewhere else but this is the cheapest I've found for a new set.

:agree:

We've been using the Cardo Scala Q2 Multiset for the past year and love them. My wife rides solely as a passenger and uses a full face helmet with no problems at all. Pairing the headsets with a phone/GPS unit/ other Scala Rider systems is a breeze and they've worked flawlessly for us. As others have stated, the FM radio is a bit twitchy, but not bad at lower speeds. The only issue from your post is that iPods connect via a wire to the individual headsets, so sharing music from one iPod could be a bit complicated, but I guess running a splitter from your iPod with a wire going to both helmets could be done.....

Overall, a fantastic product and I would definitely buy them again...

Happy Ryding,

Steve

Yes, running a spliter works great from an ipod. I have the Ironman Ipod watch as well that connects to the Ipod to allow me to control it from anywhere I put the watch. Works greats if I dont' want to mess with changing the controls and works with the Q2. I generlly put the watch on the console somewhere so I can access with gloves on. If two up, she puts the watch on but the music gets interupted if you need to talk to each other.
Not sure if this is of interest but I have successfully been able to connect 4 Q2s as each are the MultiSet.
Rider1->Passenger1
Rider1->Rider2
Rider2->Passenger2
Passenger1->Passenger2
It is not possible for Rider1 to talk to Passenger2 but rarely would see a need. I really want a Q4 to test out the conference feature but can't justifiy the cost since everyone I know ownes the Q2.

Chatterbox

Have a Chatterbox setup that has been working fairly good and affordable too!! I would recommend using the open face setup even in a closed face helmet, it is what I run and find it to work very well. The CB50 is what I have. Check them out at Chatterboxusa.com:doorag:

I have a Tom Tom rider 2 and would like to use the headset that came with it. but if not, just as long as I can hear the directions from it. I would like to get something Rider, passenger and another bike system. Any one have any thoughts on this combo. Thank you

The G4 is supposed to be backwards compatible. 4 G4s are required for -way conference I believe though.

I bought a pair of G4's and they will be delivered tomorrow. I will do a full review after a couple of thousand miles.

If I understand your requirements correctly, that's exactly the setup that the Scala Rider Q2 accomodates. I think the range on the bike/bike communications is about 1/4 mile, but I use it for rider/passenger almost exclusively.

I have the G4.
The G4 is backward compatible to any of the cardo scala units. I have talked to a 8legs who has a Q2. I plan on connecting to 2 Q2s when we go on our route 66 ride.
FYI, I talked to a cardo scala support person and found out that in an update for the G4 in a few weeks, you will be able to program your FM stations on your computer by inputing the station address ie 95.7 etc. Also, right now the music that is sent from a GPS is not stereo. It will be with this update.

We use the Scala G4 which is a blue tooth system. They are great but there is a lag time when activating the com system. If you want constant communication go with a wired system. Regards Dennis

Cardo Scala Q2 Multiset :2thumbs: my wife was very impressed when she called me while I was rolling and could not believe I was on the trike at the time. Absolutely no noise, clear as a bell. This is my first time with a communications system on a trike or bike and I'm very pleased.:D

Good info. As I understand from Cardio support, you can connect to 4 Q2s but you can't conference them in all in on one. So my hope of only getting one Q4 so I can then have 3 other Q2s conference does not seem like it will work "right now". I think I got that straight.

Cardo advertises connecting 4 units on the G4. In fact, they show a picture of it in their ads. This is in a rider/passenger on 2 bikes situation.
I think the difference in the G4 and Q2 is range in the bike to bike, Stereo capabilities and the G4 has a more powerful amplifier for voice volume. You can also get software/firmware updates via the internet. I'm not sure how the range comes into play as I have not yet used mine in an environment with another G4 on another bike. I've been limited to the range of the Q2 when communicating in a bike to bike situation.
Would I spend $100-$150 more for the G4? I did. So I guess I answered my own question. Is it worth it? :dontknow:

Yeap, G4 can do conf..however, nothing states you can connect 3 other Q2s to that conference. One, yes and I would understand that but 2 more, I have a feeling there may be limiation in the Q2 that would prevent this. Don't know.
I have the same problem, is it worth it. I have had my Q2s for almost 2 years now, love them and never leave home without them. I have done 3 hour conference calls with my customers in Hong Kong and they hardly know I am on the bike unless I gun it going 80 down the highway.

I don't see how you could add 3 Q3s. On the G4 there are 2 buttons to access/pair other units. So, Maybe by daisy chaining them somehow. Or maybe by pairing one of them through the GPS or Phone bluetooth set up on the G4. If you do that you will lose that particular function on the G4. I suppose that's OK if you run your phone through your GPS anyway. IMO, if your Q2 is working now and you like it, why change?

It is a relay type of setup. Which ever G4 unit is connected to two other units cannot use the phone. I think the conferencing ability of these is limited with the Q2's...which is a limitation of those units.
