• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Can the "Resources" tab on the new SL website be used for this?

Before I get started, let me make clear a couple of points; a) I am new to this new website, having been away from SpyderLovers for almost 3 years, during which time the feature-rich old website that I had learned to use was replaced by this one, which I don't know how to use, b) I'm not criticizing the new website AT ALL when I make observations from a user point of view, c) any suggestions I make are intended to build on the present platform to hopefully create a better user experience, not complain about it, d) I am not presenting my thoughts as the best or only way to do anything, but rather to hopefully stimulate a constructive discussion, e) if what I'm suggesting is already happening elsewhere on the website, please point that out; I'm only making this suggestion because being new to the website I haven't found it.

Okay, on to the topic at hand. One of the things I found extremely useful and interesting on the old website was the vendor section. I understand those vendors paid for the privilege of advertising their wares or services and vendors came and went depending on whether they could justify the expense. But, those who did advertise in that way provided, I think, a valuable service to the Spyder community. Whenever I needed a part or farkle or service, I would go first to those vendors and usually didn't need to search further field.

One of the drawbacks to that system is that small vendors and entrepreneurs weren't readily visible. After being actively engaged on SL for awhile, I would come across threads where other members suggested a certain company or person was providing a solution to a problem, and that's how I discovered someone providing better side cover brackets, solid billet windshield arms that didn't break, belt tensioners, floorboards, replacement windshields, etc. BlueKnight used to make and sell unique, inexpensive products and I know there were others.

I noticed on the current website platform is a tab called "Resources", which is not being used. Maybe this is where vendors can and should strut their stuff? I posted a trial listing for Lamonster Garage just to see how it worked (and it's still there so I'm guessing I didn't break any rules by doing so), so members could list companies that wouldn't normally be vendors on the website, but who provide products or services members would find helpful, like an independent repair shop, or even a dealer they recommend highly.

Thoughts on this?

Forum Support & Testing I thought was for Technical Support? I wasn't expecting to involve Anthony G in this, as I'm sure he has enough to do without being asked to make changes to a nonprofit website.

No, rather I'm suggesting that in the absence of a vendor/sponsor portion of the website, we might use this tab, which is presently unused but which seems suited for it.

If it is NOT appropriate to use this tab for this purpose (maybe the platform builder / site administrator had some other purpose in mind, I don't know), that's fine. I'm shooting in the dark here, as I can't find any info on this tab, or others which are in the menu but not being used.

Again, I am not trying to dictate or criticize, just looking for clarification.

Thanks.

We don't have any 'Sponsors' as such these days, it became too difficult for Lamont and Joan to manage in the circumstances, and a revised 'Forum Advertising policy' was published back in June 2024, outlined in post #7 of this thread:

https://www.spyderlovers.com/threads/no-longer-any-sponsors-advertising-on-spyderlovers.160280/m

And while the link in post #2 of the above thread does still work to take you to the old 'Front page vendor's list', I'm sorry, but the links in the thread it takes you to no longer work. However, as post #7 does suggest, this may not be the permanent state of affairs, altho I believe that for now, it isn't a priority.

Then of course, because it became pretty much impossible to keep the Forum running on the old platform, the entire Forum migrated to the new platform back in late 2024/early 2025 (that's at least partly why the links in the Front page vendor's thread don't work any longer) followed by the change of ownership notified in the thread below back in February 2026:

https://www.spyderlovers.com/threads/new-owner-of-spyderlovers-com-02-19-2026.166007/

In that ^ thread, Lamont states quite clearly that @Anthony G is now in full control of the Forum, and that he has agreed to keep running it pretty much the way it is, at least for now.

So there's been a LOT of changes since you took your sabbatical, but the Forum is still here, still running, and still trying to remain a valuable resource while still exploring the possibilities and uses of all the features of this new platform. However, at least for the moment, I don't believe the 'Resources' section works in a way that will help achieve anything quite like what you are after... But that's not to say that we won't ever have something that does that, we just don't right now. Time will tell... ;)

Thank you, Peter. I pretty much guessed that to be true, which is why I suggested using the resources tab as a workaround. I think it could work in a limited way and I'm not sure I understand why you think it wouldn't; can we at least give it a try? It has the advantages of already being in place as a part of the new software, plus it would not require ANY of Anthony's time, as far as I can determine.

The old way of having paid sponsor / vendors is a nonstarter under the new software, which apparently is not designed to support that. So, I ruled that out as a solution. It is possible that the software is designed to support paid memberships; if so, I think for the long term viability of the website you might want to consider that. I, for one, would be willing to pay for access to this unique and indispensable resource.

"You get what you pay for" and "there's no free lunch" are both true, eventually, and that's my fear.
