Changing the oil

I have no problem with changing the oil on the bike. My only question is, will it void the warranty on the bike if I change it myself. Two hundred bucks for an oil change is ridiculous. Being a diesel tech and going to college for auto and diesels I have never paid for an oil change. And I don't like the thought of having them do it.

For my .02, I save every receipt for oil and filters highlighting the date, which correlates to a date in my maintenance and fuel log.The part numbers for the oil and filters are on the paperwork so there is no doubt what has been used. Also, is it true that the National Hog calling contest is held in Yellville? Or is that just folklore.

No national hog calling contest that I know of. I know during the annual Turkey Trot festival they have turkey calling contests.

I can make a full on work order for the oil change and anything else I do through my diesel company, just don't want to mess up the warranty since it is my sisters bike.

And there is no way that it is two hundred bucks worth of work to do an oil change and inspect everything.

It will definitely not void your warranty (see link below). Just save the receipts for the oil and filter(s) and keep detailed records. Make sure you use the proper oil and change on schedule according to the BRP owner's manual (recently amended, BRP should have sent you the new maintenance schedule).

They cannot void your warranty because you change your own oil. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits it in the US. You do have to use oil (and filters) that meets their recommendations, and change according to their maintenance schedule. It pays to keep proof of the service, including receipts, pictures of the odometer, dates, etc. I use a checklist each time, which I sign, date, and initial for each task. The sheet includes the date and odometer mileage, and I attach my receipts. It is seldom questioned, but it could be in case of sever engine damage.

Please note that there is more to a service interval than merely changing the oil. All thge tasks should be performed and documented. Some items may require BUDS or special tools, and can generally only be done by the dealer. It will still save money if you do what you can yourself, and pay the dealer for the remainder.

If the dealer is an idiot, it would be time to call a lawyer. There are laws to protect against this practice.

It's not just cracking open a drain plug and screwing off a filter, There's a little more evolved.
Plus the dealer has an over head, And if he cant crack that nut he's out of business, Then i guess when you have warranty work to be done from that dealer and hes out of business you can always try to do it your self on your driveway,
I'm the last one to defend a dealer, But two hundred is not ridiculous for a service on a Spyder.
If you just enjoy doing it yourself than that's a different story.

I know it's more involved than just unscrewing a filter. But if I can do complete rebuilds on dodge fords and Chevy diesel motors, I think I could handle an oil change. There is a lot of videos demonstrating how to change oil on the spyder. The owners manual is pretty specific on how to do it. And I have yet to see in any of it where a good mechanically inclined person couldn't get it done. Let alone a certified mechanic. Maybe I haven't worked on a can am, but 4 years ago, no one had. I see no point in paying 200 to do an oil change. I'd rather pay myself the 100-150 dollars and spend it on something I can use.

After 1st change

The first oil change is one that should be done by the dealer at least. It's not just an oil change , it's also an overall cycle check . Unless you are a spyder tech and knowwhat to look for there's liable to be something wrong and you not know it. There's a list of things they check ( if you have a good dealer ) .After the 1st service there's no reason you can't do the oil change yourself , many spyderlovers do it all the time . The spyder does have scheduled maint. procedures ( per miles ) that should be performed by a trained tech.. There are people on the forum that do all the maint. on their spyders . Just be careful. I do my oil changes but let someone familiar with the spyder do the technical stuff.
