Ops! How about the police on their computers while driving? There is a new radar like device for police developed by Comsonics that is supposed to be on the street in near future to detect texting drivers

How would you go about making sure only the phones within the vehicle that's in gear are jammed? And how would you make sure only the driver's phone was jammed? And of course you would have to allow calls to 911 to go through; they couldn't be jammed.
It's a nice fantasy but it ain't gonna happen!
my phone is my only number. so all that need me call it. i will never look at a text when driving, but with the hands free in the car, i will answer it. most of the time after i answer it, and it is not important, i tell the people that i am on the road and will call back.
Its not as simple ss jamming the phone signal. Many nav systems use the cell phone network for data. All Onstar based systems as well as many Garmin units do.
JC,
I don't think those systems should be allowed in cars as well. When you are looking at the screen you are not looking at the road. So, when the car is moving I don't think those should work as well. Sorry if your job requires you to be on the phone while driving, but what did you do before cell phones? If you need to call someone then stop the car and call them. Chances are that you need to write something down as well and that takes even more attention off the road. The car is for driving, not conducting business.
The problem with all these gadgets they have in cars to help drivers is that it makes them stupid. People can't back a car up without a rear view camera. They can't parallel park without assistance. They can't brake properly without ABS. They can't handle a curve with out stability control. You get a person with all of these features and in about a couple of years they are not able to drive a car without these features competently. It's a real shame and I see it quite often. One guy I know had to back up his brother's car to move his out and he said that he was stressed about doing it because his brother's car didn't have a back up camera. Holy crap, look out the back window!!! :banghead::banghead:
It's simple, if the vehicle is not in park or neutral, ALL CELL PHONES in the vehicle are rendered
not useable.
to call 911 you must pull over and STOP.
what did we all do before cell phones.
but you are right, it's a fantasy.

Before
we had GPS, we used maps. Would you rather I look at a map while driving? I don't think so. Vehicle navigation systems with real time traffic, weather and other data make for safer, lower stress drivers.
I disagree with your thoughts on the use of technology in general. Do you think because I CAN use a slide rule that I SHOULD? Do you think engineering students today would be well served by even learning to use one? Are they less capable because the tools they use to do the job are better? NO. We all become dependant on the tools we learn to do the job. New generations to not fall back on outdated tools.
Pull over and read the map. Why do you have to keep riding/driving?
NOTHING is that important that is can't wait until you pull over and you may save a person's life.

Also, A GPS lowers your stress? I don't think so. I think when I used mine years ago it increased the stress because it usually brought me someplace I didn't want to be.
And what the heck does the other stuff you are talking about have to do with driving????????
I am not against technology, just how it is used.
So when you are talking on the phone, looking at your GPS and typing something on your tablet. When do find the time to look at the road and drive???
