• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Cell phones need to be jammed while vehicles are in gear

How would you go about making sure only the phones within the vehicle that's in gear are jammed? And how would you make sure only the driver's phone was jammed? And of course you would have to allow calls to 911 to go through; they couldn't be jammed.

It's a nice fantasy but it ain't gonna happen!

make it a capital crime if you are texting and you cause an accident... if found guilty... hang them by the neck until dead ... the next sunrise . .. you won't do it twice...

It's simple, if the vehicle is not in park or neutral, ALL CELL PHONES in the vehicle are rendered
not useable.
to call 911 you must pull over and STOP.
what did we all do before cell phones.
but you are right, it's a fantasy.

It won't change because

it's by far the best argument lobbyist have for why people need to be in autonomous cars.

Sad news...

tough issue....guess this would be a strong plus for the driverless car. They do need to come up with some way to limit the use while driving. Best would be not phone in a moving vehicle would function unless totally hands and visually free. Voice activated only, pick up your phone and it is dead in your hands....if you want to use it manually you have to stop the vehicle...In the meantime this will continue to happen :banghead:

my phone is my only number. so all that need me call it. i will never look at a text when driving, but with the hands free in the car, i will answer it. most of the time after i answer it, and it is not important, i tell the people that i am on the road and will call back.

I agree something needs to be done. Call me a chicken but this is one of the reasons I do not ride my Spyder much anymore. Just to many distracted drivers these days.

I have hands free talking and text in both my vehicles. All that does is allow you to drive with both hands on the wheel. Your driving is still not getting 100% of your attention. Hands free is not the answer nor are autonomous cars. Put down the phone, keep your hands off the infotainment system and just drive your fricking car.

Not an easily solved problem. I really feel in the minority these days. I do not text or use my cell when driving. Looking around, pretty much everyone else is.

Am hoping the pickup driver is prosecuted for causing 13 deaths. :bbq::bbq:

Gas buddy solved the problem

If the phone's GPS detects motion it won't work. Soon, the government will become involved in this issue and then they'll really screw it up for everyone. Which is worse DUI or DWT?

As far as setting up a damping field around the driver's compartment... that would probably be an easy thing to do. Focus it in that one seating area, and :2thumbs:

There is a new radar like device for police developed by Comsonics that is supposed to be on the street in near future to detect texting drivers

Software exists today which will disable a GPS-equipped phone when in motion (similar to the Gas Buddy comment above).

The car's manufacturer is not responsible for providing any jamming technology, and the phone manufacturers don't want to turn off any phones.

But, if a parent feels strongly about it, as an example, they can add software to their child's phone which will shut off texting, internet, and most phone access while in a moving car. Emergency calling is not disabled.

I know about this because I have a client I write web content for who makes a system. A quick internet search will find this capability, it's not something in the future.

A couple of weeks ago I saw some dude texting on the expressway. Weaving all over the damn place!!! People just don't get it..... Until a tragedy happens..... And then they go right back to texting and driving.... Sigh....
