• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

blew a mufler gasket today

On my way to one of my customers (I'm The IT guy) I noticed that my mufler sound was a bit more vocal and sound like a chopper. It was geting worse. I would admit I liked the sound, but the stink of exhaust was seeping up to my helmet.

When I got home I took the sides off to discover that the small gasket between the header pipe and the pipe prior to the Y-split (located vertically between the gas tank and the radiator on the right side.) that the spring had elongated and the gasket material had disintegrated. The metal filings were caught in the spring. I took off the heat wrap that basically held it up.

I thought it might be a season ending injury. Blown ACL, that kind of thing... but I lookd up the parts and its like $14 for the gasket and spring. Bummer is I need to take off nearly the whole mufler and most of the headers to get it installed.

Wouldn't this be covered under warranty?

Do you think wrapping the pipe may be causing more heat to stay in the pipe and thus caused the gasket to blow?

I've thought about using exhaust wrap but wondered about the side affects. Not that it caused this problem but I know it isn't recommended on stainless steel headers!

Did you reuse the gasket when you installed the Micron? I did and I had a very similar problem, the gasket went bad on me as well. Get in touch with No Magic, they had them in stock and I got it within a couple of days.

Not the same gasket / joint.

.

I had to cancel my warranty visit to the dealer. They cant get the part as was stated in an earlier post.

Suggestions for other material that I can fabricate in the meantime ?

I am curious, would it help to install a stainless zip-strap or some double twisted stainless safety wire...butted up against the break to keep it from popping out, or is it discintegrating and coming out in pieces?

I also have an exhaust leak in the same location. Seems these gaskets are breaking down prematurely. BRP has these marked as backordered for my dealer. From the sounds of it, I'll be waiting a while for the fix. At least mine is still ridable, for the time being. :sour: :dontknow:

I haven't wrapped my exhaust (yet) and I also have a leak in the same gasket.

So I don't suspect wrapping the exhaust is the sole culprit. The mere fact that BRP has a replacement part# tells me they know the problem exists and is either getting a different part from a different supplier or they are having that supplier re-design the part since the original is now considered flawed.

I checked Autzone, PepBoys and even Midas Muffler, and NO ONE CARRIES ANY sort of gasket material that I could even attempt to fassion a temporary fix.

My Syder now has a season ending injury, since their is roughly only 1 month or so decent riding weather here in New England. Like Tom Brady, I will have to get my Spyder's ACL fixed.

So what about butting a stainless zip-strap against the exhaust break? Would that keep it packed in or is this thing turning to dust? For a fix...what about USING exhaust wrap with high temp exhaust sealant to make a new gasket?

The original gasket is gone. poof. disintigrated. I talked to my dealer and they confirmed that BRP pulled the remaining supply of these gaskets. They (my delaer) offered to make a custom gasket so I can at least use the bike while waiting for the re-designed one to come in.

Inovators risk I guess.
