600 mile Maintenance

I was wondering how many miles over 600 you can go before hurting the factory waranty. The salesman told me just get in under 1000. I am at 700. I hope i am ok.

You should be fine. Lots of people have gone past 600 miles. Mine was done closer to 1000 miles and my dealer had no problem with it. I don't thin I would push past 1000 though. I'm sure others with more technical knowledge will give you some good feedback.

You are fine..!!

Don't push it to the limits for no one knows..as soon as possible now..!! After this you can fudge..!! :ohyea:

The dealer is the one who needs to be comfortable with it. I would ask the service advisor rather than the salesman, though.

:agree: with all the posts above. And NancysToy is very correct on not listening to the salesman... regardless of what :spyder2: experience he/she has.

The idea of the 600 maintenace is normal on most motorcycles. This is to assure that the machine has gone thru a proper break in: brakes, cables, liquids, belt are in place; oils are changed because the engine is still right off the factory and the valves have been seated so the engine oil could use an "refresh" on the oil. Once this is all done, you are good to go for 4600 miles more!

I only wish that were true.
I watched while they did the 600 mile check on Glo's
The oil and filters got changed.
That's it.

When I asked the answered "That's all we ever do'"

I pressed the point, they then checked the belt tension and took it out for a ride.

My point to all this is:If you aren't comfortable doing the checks yourself, make sure they were done.

Sadly true...

Some dealers forget (mostly on purpose) that the 600 mile maintenance is done for a reason, so they just assume the customer goes for the oil & filter change and nothing more.
That is why I always ask what will be done before I turn my vehicle in.
Like you said, Roger, make sure they were done. After all, we pay them by the hour, and removing the panels takes now less than that, so they can check other things...

At that point I would be pulling out the maintenance schedule and asking for their explanation about the other required tasks. Then I would look for another dealer, as well as report that dealer to BRP. JMHO

i just had my 600 service at 800

Just got mine back from the dealer from the 600 mile service at 800 miles. Not a problem. fixed a couple of warranty issues (had to order parts) and cost was exactly what they quoted. $346.00 with tax. Get to know your dealer and he will take care of you. Marina Boat Sales (Sea-Do, Can-Am, Honda) here in Northern CA is great. Especially since the day I bought it the battery was hooked up incorrectly and I only got 2 miles toward home when it ran out of juice. Spent hours along side the road waiting for them to pick it up and figure out what was wrong. They have been wonderful and receptive to any questions or issues.

Ay my 600 mile checkup (done at 900 miles...), the service tech gave me a printed list of everything that they did, and everything that they checked.

If you think that maintaining a Spyder is expensive; try letting one be neglected a bit and learn what repairs can cost!

The price seems to be about par for oil changes and checkups. I have to let the dealer do mine because I am not a mechanical person. Take average $100 per hour shop time--add the parts, fluids, etc. and it does not take to long to run the bill up.

I do have an ongoing complaint with some dealers that charge the shop rate and do not perform the services required. I have suspected, and others have agreed, that the valve check operation may be overlooked and charged for by some unscroupulous dealers. That is a nice $600 or so add on.

I was just in Redondo Beach Motor Sports to pick up a riding jacket that was on order.
I told them I was picking up a 2011 RTS SM5 with 450 miles on it and wanted to get the 600 mile service done.
I asked the price...

Ready for this?

Quote was $450!!!! I said "what"? He said that would be the max counting parts but it could be cheaper depending on parts needed. Lowest was $375 best case.

I asked what parts would be optional to cause the variable price and he said it depends.

I don't think I will be taking it there at that estimated price! Ay least I have 2 more dealers I can call.

Last year i had a 2012 Spyder RSS and made it in on time. This year since i am used to riding the 600 went on quickier than expected. It is nice to know others have gone past the 600 mile with no problems. I am at 697 right now and i am keeping the miles down. Since i have bought two spyders in two years I think i am ok with my dealer but who knows. I will be calling service tomorrow to see what they say. Thank to everyone for the input. It is nice to get real feed back. Also i think i will have the work done while i wait and watch as much as i can. I also like the idea of gettin a print out for the computer stuff.

It never hurts to get to know your Tech on a first-name basis...
A box of Donuts goes a long way in accomplishing that goal! :D
