2012 LIMITED WILL NOT START

Hello all, I am so disappointed! My 2012 Limited will not start... I posted yesterday on the tech forum, about pulling in for fuel and the bike would not start. I thought the problem was that I didn't have my foot on the brake. Today after 75 miles stopped for fuel and it would not start, after sitting for a while and several tries it started back up, the radio will not work when this happens either. I called the dealer where I purchased and they said to bring it in right away and they would check it out. It has codes in the system and a communication problem, I was there when the SM called BRP Technicial Assistance. They said pull the cluster and see if is completely plugged in. It was, now they are testing all the wiring on that circuit.

I walk back into the shop and here them talking, they didn't realize I was walking up, the Service Advisor made the comment that the bike was a piece of S---! The SM saw me over her shoulder and told him to be quite. My BP went up with those words.

I went to the General Manager that I purchased from and told him the story and he understood my upset. I told him before the purchase, two things concern me, one is the quality of the product and second is being able to get good quality service. He assured me of both, his SM and Tech both were very trained and competent.

I told him I did not feel comfortable with the Roadster, it only has 200 miles on it and has failed me two times in two days. He said that he wanted me happy and did not want our friendship disrupted. He offered to back the deal out, give me my two bikes back and the difference that I paid. I purchesed the extended warranty for 3 additional years and maintenance for 3 years.
Or he said I will give you the new 2012 White Limited that will be unloaded tomorrow.

I am at a crossroad, I am somewhat uncertain of what to do. I love the darn Roadster just after 200 miles and I know the experience will only get better. The problem is that I am bummed out with the whole experience. I really want the Roadster but I need to have no worries on quality or service.

Can anyone tell me how to find a dealer service rating for the dealership that I purchased from?

I have ridden my new 2012 RT Limited over 300 miles in three days without so much as a whimper.. I have complete confidence in my dealer tech (this is my second spyder - 21000 miles on first one before crash - not my fault).. I feel my roadster was set up right and that is why it will run well... My only concern for you is the tech.. The dealer can be the most wonderful guy in the world and if the tech is not aces , you may have a problem.. Unfortunately some folks have to go to an alternate dealer than the purchase for service.. If you keep the Spyder very long it can get into you system and be very hard to give up.. It took me over two months to get a replacement and I had severe withdrawal..
PROBLEMS NOT WITHSTANDING - I have never had so much fun in my life as I do with my Spyder Good luck with your decision and future

I am heartbroken to hear of the trouble with your new Spyder. Hopefully the service department had enough sense to check to see that they installed the battery cables firmly. many do not, resulting in a confusing host of problems such as this. Unforrtunately, there is no dealer service rating system. All you can depend on is word of mouth in your area. The fact that they appeared to call BRP and got instruction to change the cluster speaks well for them. In my experience, the techs that "know it all" or refuse to ask questions, are the ones to avoid like the plague. Their attitude that your Spyder is a POS worries me. At that point they usually give up or get half-hearted about really repairing them.

There have been a scant few Spyders with these seemingly unexplainable and hard to sort out problems. At least some of them ended up having wiring flaws, but it can take months to find the exact cause and location. I had a problem RT, and I don't think they get better under the care of the average technician. I can't blame you for thinking about a way out, although for you, there seem to be few alternatives. I will say that my second RT is a gem, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Your situation is not hopeless. I'd continue to work with your dealers and techs, preferably to take the offer to swap, but even to attempts repairs if that is the only alternative. It is premature to throw your arms in the air and run the other way, but it may be necessary to hold their hands to the fire.

I sent you a PM.

I would say your dealer is a good one if he's willing to do that for you. The fix could be as simple as a loose battery connection but if he's willing to give you a new unit that says a lot for your dealer.

Sorry for your troubles. IMO, the initial build is the most important one. Both for the spyder functioning as it should and your piece of mind. I hope it works out for you. The spyder will be worth your patience, although your dealer may try your patience. :lecturef_smilie:

RAS

It may also be that your Spyder got a virus/syndrom from Tech guy, it is called RAS and it usually turns into nightmares with no treatments.
I would definitely suggest to take new unit you were offered and clearly specify that it is important for you and for your Dealer that your new Spyder assembly will take as long as it needs to be and properly tested, so no RAS risk occurs. Look, you took your Spyder with 0 miles on it, what does it tell you? - nobody bothered to test it! I mean what kind of Tech will let you ride away without him testing it himself? - Lunatic Tech.
Definitely appreciate your Dealer and stick with him, sounds like incredibly sound business man
Just take a new unit, your current one might turn into a Lemon because Tech guy is an ....... and no one will be able to figure out what is wrong with the bike especially when it causes problems only sometimes, unless they take it all apart and put it together step by step again. Let it be their head ache.
Oh, I am sorry, I forgot that you are new in our Brotherhood, FYI - "RAS" = Rushed Assembly Syndrome.
Keep us posted and don't give up on us.

RT Limited Issues?

Man, what is up with the limited RTs. :dontknow: We had a Spyder meeting on Jan 21st and our presidents limited broke down, on the way to the meeting. It had to towed to a dealer. She described it as the engine racing and it would not shift above 3rd. Once she pulled over, it would not shift out of 1st. The bike just hit 600 miles...

:chat:

It sounds like your dealer is trying to make it right.

Just got a new 2012 sm5 a/c 2 weeks ago. it now has 1300 miles on it, no problems yet. I think I would take the dealer up on the new one. The old one may be a simple fix or it could take several tries to get it fixed. This would leave a bad feeling all the way around. New bike, new start is what I am thinking. Good luck on your decision.

:agree: !!!
Take the second unit and the odds are you will be happy. Sounds like a decent dealer. Tech is in question, you can train someone all day long, but at the end of the day if they don't have the aptitude for it,,, then training doesn't matter. Even if the tech does have the aptitude it sounds like he has a crummy attitude.

I agree!! Take the new unit. They'll make sure it is up to par and get your's fixed with time and sell it as a demo model. But not many dealers out there doing that kind of respose. Mine would let you walk off a deal after 48 hours.:lecturef_smilie:

I am also sorry to hear of your issues with the brand new Spyder.

:agree: with the others that you seem to have a great dealer. The offer to give you another Spyder in place of the current one is outstanding.

:agree: with the others that the tech has a bad attitude. I would be skeptical in allowing that person to work on my Spyder at all in the future. The fact that the Spyder seems to have been delivered without a test drive indicates service department problems to me. The Spyder is a very high tech machine and needs to be worked on carefully. A lot of problems have happened from poor servicing. The simplest things can cause problems.

I hope you can get your problem(s) resolved. Once they get the problems solved, you should be a happy camper. Keep us posted as to what happens.

:welcome:

Thanks for the support everyone... I decided to go with the new unit, I called two other dealers out of town and discussed Spyder issues with them. One of the Service Managers actually knew the Service Manager that I am dealing with, he stated she was the best and very well trained, the technician as well. They have bent over backwards to make me happy, even reimbursement on the paint sealant that I put on the Spyder. To clarify the issue with the attitude, it was the Service Adviser that that spoke those words. I am still uncertain why it wasn't test driven, this I need to ask the GM. He himself stated that he put it on the floor without any miles and that if it would have been ridden, then retested, it would probably have shown up.

The other Service Managers were honest and there were more positives than anything. They did discuss issues and said that dealer set-up is the key.

Bottom line is you have to put up with another Newbie asking silly questions for a while!

I'm glad to hear that your Dealer is trying to keep you as a customer by offering a new bike! :2thumbs:
:congrats: and let everybody that you know just how far he went... Word of Mouth advertising can keep a good dealer in business!
And the best of luck to you with the new Spyder!

:2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:

The Spyder arrived this morning, it was top priority to get set-up. I picked her up around 3:00

Well she is home in the garage... It is a big noticeable difference, the 1st one had a high temperature reading, almost in the red., It idled rougher and sounded different, died at a red light all on the way home from the dealer. Can Am is getting involved to help with the repair, it was still in the shop.

They fired the SA that said the Spyder was a POS.

The replacement Roadster feels right, normal gauge readings, sounds good, idles properly and 'EVEN STARTS' after you gas up. lol

  •:yes::clap: THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT, IF NOT FOR THIS BOARD I WOULD HAVE HAD THEM BACK OUT THE DEAL!

      • Thank You Lamont for your advise!!
