12,000 mile service

What is involved in the 12,000 mile service? My wife loves the Spyder, but wow is it expensive. I don't know of a vehicle costing as much as this one does.

If I recall correctly, the 12k service will include oil and filter change, lube, air filter, change radiator coolant, change brake fluid, replace spark plugs, check/adjust the valves, check hoses, clamps, linkages, etc. etc. I couldn't find my manual just now.

However for me, it will involve trailering my RT to Cowtown in Cuba MO and dropping it off for a while! :2thumbs: :firstplace:

So what did you pay for this? Mahalo for your info. I am trying to understand the cost of three wheels versus two wheels. I am planing on another 5,000 mile trip next year.

Well, I am not at the 12k mark yet, so I am not sure of the price, but I know the folks on this forum and it will be only a short time before we have a dozen or so price testimonials!:popcorn::popcorn:

By the way :welcome:

If you do the valve check, figure $800 or so for the service. (4-6 hours for the valves).

A lot of us have forgone the valve check portion (including my dealer and his two Spyders). I did it on the first Spyder at 12,000 but complained about the high cost. I did not have mine done at 20,000 on either of the the previous two Spyders.

I am planning on having it done at 30,000 miles or so on my RTS.

You are right in stating that this is one of the most expensive vehicles to own regarding service.

My dealer quoted me $200 for labor. Plus any "fluids"...or parts needed. Just changed oil/filters so that won't be in the 12k (actual mileage 15k) service. Getting it done 7/20 in prep for Redwoods trip. Any change to cost, etc. will let you know. Know they want Ms Spyder when they open..so that means I saddle up at 5 a.m. to make it on time!!!! Whoop Whoop love those early morning rydes....

yes service is expensive. So you haven't experienced any issues holding off on the valve check?:dontknow:

thankfully, my dealer has a deal for like $1700 that covers my first 6 visits to them, whether it's the 600 mile, 12000 mile, or whatever. well worth it mathematically so far.

We have 3 bikes: 2 :spyder2: and an off-brand 2-wheel, 96 cu. in. V-Twin. The only dealer service I use is for warranty, tires, and BUDS/computer needs. The manual valve adjustment on the Rotax is a PITA on an RS (I imagine more difficult on an RT) and takes a fair amount of time. The 4 - 6 hours for the complete service seems reasonable. If you've added stuff to your :spyder2: which requires more labor to move wires to get at the motor only adds to the time/cost.

No issues for me on the valve check. Dealer actually tore his machine down at 20K to check it out--he found no adjustments were needed.

This is not a guarantee--but a calculated risk. Sort of like, how high an insurance deductible do you want?

I was wondering about the valve adjustment...
Who actually felt the need for it (and how does it show besides maybe knocking) and at what mileage was it done?

I was told to expect to pay at least $1,200 for the 12k service and that does not include replacing the back tire that they recommend doing at that time, either.:cus:

Just got back from the 24k. $500 and change. The 12k was under $200. The difference in cost is the valve check starts at 24k and every 12k after.

My valves are good to go, so are my rear bearings. :2thumbs:

Think the cost difference y'all are seeing is where you live and who you take it to.

my 12k cost $1500... customer svs rep said something about having to hook the brake line up to a machine to change out fluid being one reason so expensive... :dontknow:

You can't go by what someone paid, You have to go by what the dealer did or Didn't do.
If dealer went by the book [whether you think it needs it or not] you would see a lot higher prices quoted.

My dealer offered me this as well, and I was happy to take it. I have a deal like this on my car (Honda) that has saved me MUCHO DINERO so far; I just hit the 70,000 mile mark on that vehicle. My :spyder2: just had her 600 mile service a few days ago and everything is running beautifully. :2thumbs:

Wow!!!!! So the valves should or should not be adjusted at 12,000 miles? It is or isn't costing me 1200 - 1500 dollars for the 12,000 mile check up?
