CHAD mod- from No Magic Neon

I'd been riding with mine all the way forward and 2/3 of the way up. No buffeting or other issues. Then the temp went to 85+ and there was NOT ENOUGH wind! Had to set it like Smyliatcha's to get cooled down to a reasonable riding temp. Does that mean it's TOO GOOD:dontknow:. All I can say is it's really nice to be able to ADJUST the amount of breeze you can get.

I put my new chad on last night. much better for me ...

...I haven't noticed any backdrafts that were troublesome...

All the way down, all the way tilted for me. Over 100 on the highway with a lightweight little do nothing beanie helmet and a flimsy pair of sunglasses and I was A-Otay!

Yeah..sure..but all you guys have been ryding without your corners cut off! :roflblack:

My CHAD arrived not even an hour ago. It will keep its corners because I don't have the tools to cut them off. I know with certainty it will be better than the BRP Ultrasport windshield on there now. That thing is useless x 3 On Saturday I think it's main function was to funnel bugs right into the visor of my helmet! I was pelted!!

Interesting observation. I do like the look of the cut off CHAD a lot better though. Maybe MagicMan could loan Lamonster another CHAD for side by side testing?

Okay it took me some playing and I know I'll do some more as I put more miles on it.

For me it seems to work great with it all the way up and all the way back. I can still look over the top of it and the only wind I'm getting now is around my arms. I get a little bit from the back but near as bad as it was. All in all I like it and cutting the corners of the shield is the only way I would put it on my Spyder. I love the way it looks now.

:agree: I cannot believe how much better the Chad looks with the corners rounded, Lamont. Excellent mod. :2thumbs:

That looks soooooooo much better than the stock shield. What kind of radius did the put on the cut?

Pretty much the same as the Cal Sci I cut down. I just eyeballed what looked good to me on a piece of paper and transferred it to the shield. :doorag:

I just got the CHAD this afternoon from the big brown truck and I have a few comments on the installation.

First, I used the stock bolts to hold down the plate and the supplied bolts to attach the windshield. I can see how they seem short but properly tightened down the threads come right to the back of the nut and considering the lack of significant load on these I imagine that was the way they were designed.

Second, they include 8 rubber washers to mount between the metal to both cushion and provide friction. I didn't like the way the shield binds up so I took a quick trip to Lowes and got 4 nylon washers and 4 additional stainless washers. I used the nylon between the brackets and the stainless on the outside where the plastic nuts contact the bracket. It seems to tighten up just fine but now when you loosen them the screen slides up, down, up and back like butter.

Third, when installed the screen was tilted to the right. By tilted I mean the right side top was further back than the left. If made the screen look off center. To correct this I had to shim the right top tab on the base bracket using 2 of the washers from the stock shield. That rotated the base ever so slightly counter clockwise. That got it very close but to get it perfect the bent the screen mounting tabs on the left bracket about 1/16" down. That pulls the left side of the shield down and has the effect of rotating it that last little bit counter clockwise to get it square.

I took a short ride in both the lowest and furthest back position as well as the highest and furthest back and I think this is going to work out well for us. For me the up and back position was great and based on the feel the down and back position will be great for Joyce @ 5' tall.

We'll give it a few rides before we decide if I'm going to trim the edges.

BTW, this is Joyce's Spyder but somehow I end up doing all the wrenching :ohyea:

That's a nice idea, mjw, thanks.

I like that I'm confident that it won't slip out of adjustment with the stock washers, but the nylon would make you tend to adjust it more often (more quickly) and get the angle/height you really need at the moment.

You guys have me thinking I'll need to add yet another shield to my collection!

Looks GREAT with those rounded corners!

I did much the same thing when I installed Nancy's. I used fiber washers instead of nylon because I couldn't find any nylon fender washers and the usual nylon ones are quite small. I also needed additional stainless washers to place below some bare plastic nuts. This makes them much more stable. The nuts have a cone shaped bottom instead of a flat one, which makes them wobble considerably with the rubber washers. Nancy is 5'2" and I am 6'0". We found an intermediate position that suits us both pretty well, so we don't have to adjust frequently. Had no problems with the mounting on ours, despite some console problems that have broken several windshields. The bracket lay very flat on a flat surface, with no warpage. It did have to be pulled down into place on the Spyder by the fasteners however. I didn't like the "barely there" screws provided, so I used BRP windshield screws, which stick through the nuts slightly. Hope you enjoy the CHAD as much as we have so far.

A little history.

The CHAD originally shipped with NO washers. A few of us griped a bit (I know... surprising) about the adjustment slipping at speed. We began to use star lock washers.

I7 didn't like that idea as the paint would be scratched. They came out with the rubber/stainless washers which, like you, I did not like as the adjustment was difficult, at best. But... they did listen and respond rather quickly. That's good.

I switched to plastic fender washers a few months ago and like the results.

What exactly are plastic fender washers?

What exactly are plastic fender washers?

You'll need a washer with a 1/4" hole in it. Normal washers are... maybe... .625" in overall diameter.

Fender washers are much larger (but same hole size)... about 1.00-1.50" in overall diameter. They're typically used for securing something to sheet metal (like "fenders").
