Seal floorboards and heat

Does anyone have the Seal floorboards and the upper block off plates on a 2011 RT? If so, does this combination eliminate the right leg heat problem with the feet in both the normal and forward positions? It looks looks it should, but I would like to have definite information before spending the money. Are there any overheating issues resulting from this? Thank you in advance.

Alan.

I 1st added the upper block off plate and removed the lower panel as recommended but still had a hot foot in the forward position. Heat coming out the lower hole. Then I added the lower block off plate. No hot foot but to much heat coming up the middle of the spyder and bike was running towards the hot side of the scale. Finally I cut the upper block off plate in half (just above the screw tab. It's still a little warm but I'm not melting my shoes anymore. Spyder is running normal temp range. Overall It's a decent solution till I can figure something better.

Be sure to remove the bottom (under side) plate so the hot air has some place to go

I always recommend Spyderpops block off plate. I had mine for 2 rys and have never had a hot foot experience. Just finished a 600 mi. 3 day trip in a very unusual 90 degree Or. and Wa. heat wave. No heat issues at all with my feet, but would have like to take my T shirt off. Afraid the world isn't ready for that kind of beauty yet:yikes:

I have had Seal Deluxe FB and upper block off place in place since my 2012 RT was new, 14K miles ago. I removed the under panel as well. I normally wear boots. I don't ryde in desert conditions, but even at or near 100, with high humidity, I, unlike others, don't and haven't experienced "heat issues."
BTW - IMHO, the Seal's are the best!!!

John, I just ordered your floor boards. Looking forward to the installation. Which Spyderpops blockoff plate do you recommend? I've never used one and know that I will need something now that I will be moving my right foot around. I hope it doesn't cause heat to come up between the seat and bike. Thanks for your help!

I was wondering the same thing, I have the block off plate but a lot of heat gets around it which is very obvious when I have my feet up on the touring pegs mounted on the black deflectors. I am hoping that the seal boards would deflect the heat, has anyone noticed this?

Thank you all for your replies. Like Bluestratos, I observed from the photographs that the upward curve of the Seal floorboards appears to have the ability to deflect the heat emanating from the lower vent downwards and away from the feet, at least while moving. This, combined with blocking the upper vent, may offer a solution to the right foot heat issue. I note that both John of Seal floorboards and Tofriendscreek have this combination and both have no heat issues. I also note, however, that they both live in more northerly states and I wonder if anyone else has tried the combination in real southern summer heat.

I'm referring to the radiator block off panel. Be sure to remove the bottom plate, as instructed. It's very inexpensive (around $25. I think). For me, it works great.

I tried out my foil back Styrofoam heat blocker that I installed behind Spyder Pops block off plate and no more hot foot! I road just over 100 miles in my tennis shoes with short socks and felt no heat at all. On the way back I took the Chuckanut (a serpentine coastal road here in northern Washington state with max speed of 40 mph with lots of 15 mph sharp curves and very narrow roads). This is the best test as I hit speed of 90s and break hard and power through the corners. My foot used to bake to such a point I would pour cold water over it to reduce the discomfort. I never even thought about it this time.

I had discovered that while the block of plate reduces the hot flow of air, it a actually radiates heat and a lot of hot air escapes around the perimeter. On Friday I took some 1/2" foil back Styrofoam and it out to fit tightly behind the blocking plate. I took less than 5 mins but it wedges in well and bocks off the areas that are missed by the S.P. plate. I then remounted the plate to lock in the Styrofoam. Try it you like it!

I have to say I'm disappointed in the RT. I have Seal floorboards (which I love) but continued to have heat problems on my right boot. Last week I had the dealer install Spyder Pops block plate and heat shields. I took it out yesterday and put 200 miles in 80/70 degree heat. No difference whatsoever! It runs a little warmer but the damn thing still puts out more heat than a steel mill! The heat shield/block plate didn't do what I wanted but the fact of the matter is the Spyder just puts out way to much heat on the feet. I melt my shoes so much that I have to take my shoe and socks together and RIP my socks out of the shoe/boot!

I have written to BRP and if they don't come up with a realistic fix I'm going to trade it on a Goldwing. I'm fed up.:banghead:

This post concerns me because I wonder if there are other problems with this RT. I had the deluxe Seal boards last summer and I did have heat issues while riding at the owners event in Durango. I had Harvey install his block off plate and relief was immediate. We rode with temps over 100 every day and my foot stayed cool and the temp gauge never went past mid-range.

I have switched to Seal Pups and added Lamont's NBV highway pegs and still do not have a problem with heat here in south GA and North FL - where it is quite warm. In fact, I kind of miss the heat in the winter because it was nice to let the heat go up my pant leg ...

I guess some of the questions I might ask: Is this rider spending a lot of time in traffic or idling? Did the dealer remove the lower plate, as recommended by the block off plate instructions? Did they install it properly? Is there a problem with the fan controller? As I recall, the heat really blows out only when the fan is on.

Now, I will admit that many on here would disagree with the way I ride but what can I say. I am always in the highest gear possible, which keeps the RPMs down. I can do this with an SM 5 - and, before I get flamed, everything runs great, I don't lug the engine and there is plenty of power if I need it. I am also lucky that I seldom have to ride in traffic, which keeps air moving.

Not an expert here but I would check for proper installation of the block off plate and then have the fan controller checked out. BUDS can probably pull up a history of engine temps.

Thanks for letting me vent ...:gaah:

I'm with Bill, I'd check the lower block off plate. I don't know of anyone having the heat problems you describe with a properly installed SpyderPops block off plate.

Thanks so much, John. I have placed the order.

If you fail to remove the underside panel then the block off plate is useless, the heat has to be able to escape and if the underside plate is still attached the heat will come up elsewhere.

The 2013 is a different story though, you actually have to drill some holes for it, but 2012 and below it works great.

do you have any pics of what you did, or more info about" my foil back Styrofoam heat blocker"?

I have seal floorboards, block off plate, and removed the lower panel on my 2012 RT Limited. Rode last Saturday 100+ degrees in San Antonio. My boots were warm, (so was the rest of me) but not hot and definitely not melting my boot soles. I use the sloped section of the floorboard as a highway peg. Before the blockoff plate would feel the hot air, with the plate installed no issues.

Again, thank you all for your replies. In particular srwilli who gave me the information which I needed. I will now order the floorboards.

on spyder pop page it states that "This product requires that you retain the right under body panel for proper flow of hot air"
Should that say remove instead of retain?

My 2010 RT LE has the top block off and seal floorboards an I have no hot foot issues like I had before installing these.
