Enclosed Trailer Recommendations?

I am looking to buy an enclosed trailer to haul my RT-S and my husband’s 1800 Goldwing. We tried a 7 X 16 but that was too small to fit both bikes so we thought we would go up to an 8 X 20. Anyone have any recommendations, pros or cons, on brand or size?

I know some of you will say we should ryde instead of using a trailer, and I concur, :agree: but there are events, such as Spyderfest, that we are missing out on because we don’t have enough leave to get there and back on the bikes.

:dg2:

PSLawing (dale and Peggy) used an 8x18 to haul their Spyder and Road King to Spyderfest. We used an 8x20 to haul both Spyders. Our 8x20 was custom built by Cargo South, Ocilla Ga. I would make sure the trailer has D Rings installed, or an in floor track system. You can get the Spyder Lock for the Spyder and install it yourself. You'll need a side door and a rear ramp door. Minimum 2500lb twin axles with brakes on all 4 wheels. I'd also recommend LED lighting. I have twin 3500lb axles and LED lighting on ours. What are you going to pull the trailer with?

I just ordered an Aluma inline 16 foot snowmobile Trailer.
Wanted to be able to trailer Spyder or my sleds.
Its 7 wide, 16 ft long with a 4 1/2 foot V (20 1/2 ft total) drive on - drive off
Dual 3500 lbs axles.
Loaded my Spyder in one like it and measured everything.
Should be able to load Spyder and a Goldwing no issues.
We tried same trailer but in a 14 ft length with 4 1/2 ft V. I think we could of done it but it would of been a REAL tight squeeze.

I used a 8 x 20 Haulmark. with 12 D-rings in floor and tie downs along the side. We hade 3 Spyders in it at Spyderfest no problems at all. You will be able to do a spyder and a big 2 wheeler easy. The 8 ft gives you plenty of room. Make you you have lighting in the trailer for sure and a drop down rear ramp.

I have owned several enclosed trailers over the years for snowmobiles, atv's, etc. I like the Lightning series from Forest River as they are all aluminum. I bought a 6x12 for my RS/ST series as it fits fine but most other brands I looked at I would have had to go with a 7x14 because of their designs of the openings. I know the RT is wider so probably atleast a 7x14 or 7x18 would be best. This dealer in Lancaster, PA is very agressive and stocks a good inventory. I looked all over VA/MD and couldnt find an all aluminum one for under $6000 for a 6x12. I got one from them for $4100.

Here is just one example of one that might work for you....but you may want longer to fit both bikes.

I don't trailer the Spyder much so instead of buying another trailer I use my 3 place snowmobile trailer. It is 7' x 18' with a 5' nose (23' total box length). There is room for two Spyders so no problem for Spyder and bike.

A 6' wide is to narrow and 8' wide in my opinion is not necessary. The 7' wide gives you enough room to maneuver around inside plus it has the advantage of being able to see down the sides of the trailer without the use of extension mirrors. The trailer is all aluminum and weighs in at 2000 lbs. I got 12 mpg towing it to Spyderfest so you will use some fuel and if there is a side wind it will pull you around. There is a lot of surface area on these trailers and they do catch the wind, like pulling a billboard down the highway.

As far as what brand to buy that is up to you to do your own research. I am done recommending what people should buy, it never seems to work out well. One persons love is another persons hate.

MXZ600, saw your trailer at SF. Liked what I saw. Did you do the graphics?

Thanks for the complement on the trailer Bruiser.

The graphics were done by Decal-Pros in South Haven, MI. I had the idea in my head what I wanted and Eric at Decal-Pros did the rest. I was very pleased with the way it turned out, the decals are die cut not printed.

Eric has an ebay store and does custom work. Give him an idea and he most likely can make it.

We purchased our new trailer thru SDG trailer sales in Georgia. We drove 1100 miles to pick it up at the factory. They were 5-6 K cheaper than any local dealer to us in Fort Worth.

SDG Trailer Sales 800 380 9743

Our trailer is 102``x 84`` x 24` with V-Nose
Dove tail
Rear ramp door
Side walk in door.

Fits our Spyder and our friends Harley just right.

We receive no commission, just passing along a good manufacturer.

enjoy the ride

Like Bruiser said, we pulled our HD Road King and Spyder RT to spyderfest in an 8.5 x 16 enclosed trailer, dual axle, electric brakes. Pulled it with a F150. The trailer did GREAT, the truck screamed and drank gas in the mountains! You'll need a bigger engine truck. We're looking at a F250 Diesel.

Yep, our Silverado did the same thing. I quit using the trailer tow function on the shift lever after just a few miles. 10.5 average MPG out and back to Spyderfest is the pits. Some friends were towing with their Toyota trucks and said their mileage was not much better and they were towing much smaller loads.

What engine and gearing does your Silverado have under the sheets?
I had a 2007 $WD with 3.73 gears, and the 5.3 litre flex-fuel engine... it always did pretty well when pressed into dragging anything around behind it; usually right around 14mpg.
My "New" 2007 has the same engine and 3.42 gears... GUTLESS! Although when lightly loaded, it does get almost 22 mpg!
Aerodynamics and momentum can make or break the deal when towing.

I have the Ford 6.7L Powerstroke diesel and it is a workhorse. Even when pulling my 43' 20000lb toy hauler. It hardly ever shifts out of overdrive.

Enclosed Trailer

Although I only need room for one Spyder and only have a 5 cyl Chevy Colorado, I found WWW.NHTrailers.com the manufacturer of ProLine all aluminum enclosed trailers to be a great deal. Tom will build what you want and or need. Great people to do business with. Highly recommended. The Bowtie bested at 12.2 on our recent NY to Tennessee to NY trip, but overall great trailer. 12'l 2w/2 1/2" vee nose....:clap:

I bought a trailer 2 months ago. Was looking at enclosed but came across a neighbor with an Aluma trailer and was very impressed. I bought the 6810 model which is perfect for Spyders. Durable, folding ramp, stable at high speeds and more fuel efficient than enclosed. Towing with my van only dropped mpg from 20 to 16. Only neg is that it's not as clean when you arrive at destination. Here's a thread.

I have the 5.3 with 3:73 gears. The trailer is a V nose 8x20. This was a heavy load. The trailer is 2200# and both Spyders along with all the gear, luggage etc. I'm guessing total weight at around 4800# + truck. Once I took it out of trailer tow mood it drove a lot better.

Thanks SpyderDen! We just bought a F250 with the same Powerstroke Diesel! We can't wait to try it out!

I just bought a Titan by Stealth 7x20 enclosed trailer. With a 7' trailer you shouldn't need extra wide mirrors on your vehicle. This will haul 2 RT's with trailer hitches. Excellent quality.
