Tabs for Jayden

Desert Spyder

New member
This thread is long overdue but I have the blessings of my friend to write it. Merri is a kindergarten teacher and a Spyder owner (PE). She is a member of Spyderlovers and we met just prior or at the LA Owners event. Merri is also a cancer survivor.

Part of Merri's duties are for cancer patients who are in her charge and she keeps track of them afterwards as well. Including a 9 year old named Jayden.

Jayden has about 3 weeks to live. Here is his letter to Merri dated last May:

[TD="class: td1"]
This is a letter that was given to me today by Maverick, Jayden's little brother.

Dear Miss R***,

I am having my nurse type this for me, because I do not have enough strength left to write, and besides my spelling is not so good. I wanted to make sure I told you some things before I leave. I will never forget how much you have meant to me these past 4 years. When I first got out of the hospital and you came over to teach me, I was happy that you were going to be my teacher. I remember how we would talk about the things that they were going to do to my body and how you explained to me about how food would taste weird once I started chemo. You did not hide me from the facts or the fears that you had. We talked about how you told the doctors that they were wrong, how you would not miss your daughter growing up- you would be there for her first love, her first heartbreak, graduation etc. I thought about that when the doctors told me that the cancer was in my bone marrow and that they could not do anything more for me.
I thought about how I would miss those things, but I did not. I graduated from Kindergarten. My first love was my kindergarten teacher. She always smiled at me, sang silly songs and loved me even when I was not following the rules. She taught me how to read, to write and to solve problems. She loved me enough that when I was sick, she came to my house. She held me, brought me Ginger Beer and peanut M&Ms. She never got frustrated with me when I could not remember how to write the number 4 or which way a “p” was supposed to face.
I am now facing my first heart break. I will not be with my brothers as they grow up. I am hoping that Ryland will be a good brother to the boys and that they won’t give mom and daddy too many problems. I have to say good bye to the ones I love. Like you.
I am not afraid to die. I am ready to be without pain. I want to say thank you, not for only being my teacher, but for being my friend. I will wait for you in heaven.

What a way to end a school year!!!
Hugs,
Merri

Last year about April we started a "Fill the Frunk for Jayden" campaign which was pretty impromptu but netted $200+ plus a quantity of pull tabs. The pull tabs are used to pay for Jayden's chemo treatments. Since that date the members of SRA Inland Empire Chapter have continued to collect pull tabs (from coke cans) and giving them to Merri.

For awhile Jaydens condition improved although he is surviving with only 1/2 of one lung. The doctors gave the family some hope then discovered another mass saying he has about three weeks to live.

Thats about Christmas time.

So here's what I ask from you: #1 pray for Jayden and his family, and for all the other Jayden's of this world. Merri recently lost another student, who was 5, to occipital cancer. So pray for Merri, too.

#2 begin a Fill the Frunk campaign of your own. Its too late for Jayden but there are thousands of kids just like him...unfortunately. If you are part of a Spyder or motorcycle club this can be a worthwhile project to get involved in. If not a member then you can do it simply at home using a baggie and a refrigerator magnet. Just break off the tab before putting the can in the recycle bin. Afterwards, you can either send it to me and I will see it gets to the proper resource, in this case Loma Linda. Or you can locate a charity near you. Just google pull tab charities.

May the Lord bless you and keep you and give you peace this Christmas season. Brian

When I was an EMT children always broke my heart, and they still do. Our prayers are with him and his family.

Being a cancer survivor myself, my heart and prayers go out to them and all the family's who are dealing with this terrible disease! When I was going through my treatments , people would ask how I was coping and I would say,"there are young children who are dealing with this, at least I understand what is being told to me(not that it is any easier to go through or deal with but puts it in perspective ) some of them are too young to understand what is happening. I see Jayden is wise beyond his years! What a special little man. God bless and may he find the peace he deserves !

Pull Tabs

I am part of SRA - Inland Empire, and want to point out this. It is not limited to just soda cans, but beer cans, energy drink cans, or any cans that use these type of tabs will do. I have three people at work that save cans, and they all let me pull the tabs from what they collect. Some bring them from home, and it is not uncommon to find a tab or two on my desk. I average about 15 tabs a day, and none are from me (I only drink water). The point I am trying to make is tell your co-workers, your friends, as they add up really fast. This photo is of a Planters peanut jar I use, and has been about three weeks since I had to empty it into a plastic bag. 002.jpg001.jpg

Also, if cost of postage is an issue. PM me and I will reimburse the postage fees.

Merri here- Jayden's parent's can still use the pull tabs to help with their expenses at Loma Linda- which they will be paying for even after Jayden has left us. If you wish to send tabs for Jayden, you can mail them to me at work. Mesquite Trails - Merri Rice 13884 Mesquite St., Hesperia, CA 92345.
Every day is a battle for this little guy, but he is a courageous and amazing young man. I have had 3 of the four boys in my regular classroom ( number 4 starts next fall) and I have been truly blessed to know this family. Thank you for keeping him and them in your thoughts and prayers. As much emotional pain I have when I visit with him, I cannot even begin to imagine what they are going through.

Marri,
You get all of my tabs, I hope you know that! Thanks for all you do to help these brave kids in their struggle.

I posted on FB this morning about Jayden, (I was in tears as I posted it) I will continue to do all I can to help these amazing kids, they can teach us all a little about courage and bravery. Jayden and his family are in my thoughts....

In the last few years. I have seen kids that have faced the most challenging circumstances because of cancer (mostly brain tumors)in some cases the loss of their sight, hearing and balance yet they are unstoppable, they continue where some adults would throw in the towel, these kids are truly my heroes!
I am a member of the task force for the Local "Ride for Kids" event here in San Diego, and I will be, long after I can no longer ride. The "Ride for Kids" supports the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, you can find out more at www.Ride4Kids.org.

I ask that everyone take a moment to do whatever they do (prayer, chant, rub the lucky rabbits foot) for Jayden and his family and for all the people we know or we have yet to be touched by, that have suffered due to cancer (almost everyone knows someone affected either directly or indirectly, I know several that ryde Spyders)

We can end this horrible disease.

-George

Thank you everyone, an update

Thanks George! I appreciate what all my Spyder family has done to collect tabs for Jayden. Not an event that we attend goes by without two or three people walking around asking people for the tabs off their cans. You guys rock!
Jayden spent 6 hours at the hospital yesterday doing some test and arranging for a hospice nurse to come daily so they can give him morphine instead of the pain meds that he is currently taking.- hoping to have that in place next week.
I received a phone call at the school on Friday from Santa ( he dis not tell me his real name, so he IS SANTA) He wanted to offer to come by and visit my little guy and his three brothers next week. All is arranged (going shopping today for presents) that he will meet me at the school on Tuesday afternoon and follow me to his house- he is driving a horse drawn sleigh- BTW. I do not know who this mystery man really is, but am so thrilled that he wants to help make a special visit to my boys.
Jayden loves root beer, so I stopped at Bev Mo yesterday and got a variety of special root beers and made them into reindeer for Santa to bring as well.
Please continue to keep all of them in your thoughts and prayers.

If you will post an email address that i can send a $25.00 donation to, I would do that rather than waste money paying postage for these tabs, that way the entire amount would go to this childs parents to assist with medical cost. If you would prefer to respond in private here is my email address.

Joe, my email is [email protected] If you want to send a check, I would prefer it be made to the parents (as not to have anyone think I took the $ for myself) mom is Melissa Settle
Have not really done many $ collections other than "filling the frunk" at rydes. In fact at the BRP owners event I refused to take money from people, as not to have BRP mad at me. Our school address is Mesquite Trails 13884 Mesquite St., Hesperia, CA 92345 Please put my name on anything or the office will be confused- Merri Rice. feel free to email me with questions

Thank you, i will put a check in the mail inthe morning, thank you for helping these folks cope with this terrible disease.

Thanks Joe

I think after this year I may refuse any additional students for the remainder of the year. As a cancer survivor myself, I know I offer the students and families hope and support that they would not normally have- but in 7 years this will be my 2nd loss, and all with in two months. I only have one other student on my case load besides Jayden- and emotionally I just need a break. Maybe a miracle will happen and there will not be more students to add to my case load anyway... One can hope!

It would be a miracle if there was not another child in need of help before the end of this week
