Tendonitis in right hand

This is the thrird yearina row that I have Tendonitis in my right hand. Specifically the tendons that go to my thumb. This is a direct result of the throttle. I do use a cramp buster, both on the horizonal (palm rest) mode and pointing straight down (thumb paddle mode).

I've gone to PT last year and the year before that. What do you all do to prevent tendonitis like this?

Diabetic Neuropathy does me in... Feels about the same as Tendonitis or or that Carpal Tunnel Stuff... I hit the Cruise Control and do some stretching and give the old arm a good shake ot three and I'm good to go for another half-hour...

I had a numbness in the right hand that was carpal tunnel. Had release surgery 9 years ago and haven't had the problem since.

I had mine operated on. Now only have to contend with arthritis and bad shoulders. Time to talk to doctor about shoulder joint replacement. So many things to slow us down. Okay to slow down but not stop. Hard to get going after the stop. Hang in there.

I also can relate to driving while hurting. This year I have encountered bad arthritis in both my shoulder joints. Even doing little things was an endurance thing for me. The Dr. has me on some meds that help with the range of motion. I still have good days and bad days--but at least I can do most things. I am going back to the dealer and going to drive my Vulcan (which has not sold yet). If the ride turns out good, I am going to bring the Vulcan back home. Wish me luck.

Hum, My doc says it is Bursitis I have in my shoulders, Numbness in the feet (Diabetic) eat up with stupidity according to my wife, among many other ailments, but other than those, I FEEL GREAT!!!!! Life is Good!

All of them "Itis" brothers are meaner than a poked rattler! :gaah:
:agree: Life is good! Better than any of the alternatives by a long shot!

Had same problems when I first got Spyder..... get a throttle lock like a Throttlemeister and it will help greatly!

Didn't your therapist give you exercises to continue with after you stopped going to PT?

Yea, I've got the stretchy rubber bands etc. I did do the excecises. But once then tendon gets inflamed, it keeps on hurting and gets worse. An ice pack helps momentarily, but it does come back again.

It may not actually be in the hand...the hand is just what hurts. Mine originates in my forearm, and is complicated by some muscles that then knot up in my hand. The constant pulling eventually causes me tendonitis, but it is actually just above my wrist, even though the hand is what hurts the most. Once we found this, we modified my strengthening and stretching exercises, and I learned how to massage the offending muscles myself. It has really helped reduce the repeat incidents, by being able to properly address the problem before it gets out of hand, and keep things stretched in the interim.

I sure know what you are going through. I get tendonitis easily, in several places...and it lasts way to long to ignore. Once it is inflamed, you absolutely have to lay off for a while, or it doesn't seem to ever heal. Hope a return to PT isn't necessary for you...but if it is, those folks do a marvelous job!

Man, I love you guys. I have all the above ailments and probably a few more that haven't been discussed. I thought I was alone. I have in both my hands. I have an RS so cruise control is not an option. My left hand has no problem with shaking it. My right, I just wait until there is noboby behind me and shake it a few times. Does the trick. DR says because of my diabeties, nothing can be done. Oh well.

A throttle lock might help during those "shake the right paw" episodes...
Diabetic Neuropathy; Sux; don't it? :gaah: But on the positive side of the ledger; you ARE out there riding!

I've got Carpel Tunnel in both hands. One reason I like the RT with semi automatic, so I am semi- retiring my GL 1800. No need to clutch the Spyder in stop and go situations. Every bike I've had in the past 14 years has had cruise control. Won't have one without it. At some point I will have the surgery, but I'm just avoiding that. I'm always setting cruise and shaking and working the feeling back into my hands when riding. Try not to ever let that slow me down. Heck, even happens when driving my car, on computer, etc.

Scotty,

You never seek to amaze me! I work in physical therapy and you are correct about the possibility of referred pain.

I have spent more time than you would ever imagine under the care of orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists. I still do my workouts (when I have time) at PT. You eventually learn a thing or two along the way. My doc tried to pound the concept of referred pain into my head for years. It took some talented therapists to find the sources of mine, and work out the kinks. I am a biologist by education, but I continue to learn amazing things about the human body every single year.

For me I am pretty sure the origination is at the wrist bend. I used the kinesio tape to help in the PT at home last year. I will have to use it again now. That plus perhaps a Carpel tunnel brace may help me.
I also find that if I ride with my my right hand over the throttle, no thumb under does help. But I feel safer with the traditional thumb under the throttle bar.
