• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I have started noticing something and am curious if others have noticed. My rear wheel is getting covered in a fine black powder that looks like soot. The wheel in the pictures below were cleaned approx 500 miles ago. Is this abnormal? I have almost 14000 miles onthe Spyder and have never noticed this kind of filth so quickly.

My 09 GS does the same thing. Combination of tire rubber and brake dust. I think this is normal.
 
This has just recently started happening?? :shocked: Maybe your rear brakes are hanging up and wearing themselves out; creating all of the new dust.. :shocked:

I had that when GADOT paved roads near my house. It took the newly pave about 6 months and 8 to 10 hard rains to wash the black dust off the roads.

I understand this is somewhat normal and I know this is common with disc brakes but this seems excessive and not what I am accustomed to seeing on this Spyder. I have put all 14000 miles on it and this seems to have just started recently. Before I cleaned the wheel it was so coated in black powder you would have thought it was painted flat black. I mean it was on there REALLY THICK, unlike ANYTHING I have ever seen on any other vehicle in 25 years.

Possibly but I just did the rear tire and checked the brakes. They seem to be functioning normally an the caliper is not locked up. I am running the EBC pads from BajaRon on the back. Never noticed this with stock pads.

I was thinking exhaust gaskets since they have not been replaced but I think that is a stretch.

Brake dust. It is a by-product of disc brake use. Your front wheels accumulate it, too...as do those on your automobile.
 
Brake dust, Next time your stopped at a light look at at the front wheels of cars alongside you, Most if not all
will have the same dust. It's normal.

Fronts are clean. There is some brake dust, what I would call normal. The rear however looks like it has been spayed flat black. This is a new thing. Has not been happening previously.

Does yours get this dirty in 500 miles?

Something certainly has change. Did you just change to these brake pads? New pads do need to wear in a little... but again; this seems excessinve.

I have about 1500 miles on the EBC pads. Did the rear pads in Jan 2012 but I had not really looked at the rear wheel a lot since I did them. Maybe it is the EBC pads. Really noticed it when I did the rear tire.

No, go with ECB. Tried 130,000 miles BRP generation 1,2 and 3 pads and OEM rotors: enough is enough!

Yes, sometimes. It depends on the weather conditions, how much you use the brakes, etc. Remember that with an RTS or LTD, the smooth chrome fronts will collect less brake dust than the wide, flat, powdercoated rear. I don't think what you are seeing is all that unusual, although it is enough that it could indicate a brake adjustment or release problem. If it is combined with excessive pad wear, it would be a warning sign of brake problems or bad pads. If you are worried about it, have your dealer take a look. At least that way it will be on record.

For what it's worth.....
You might try touching the brake disc after a few miles of riding....gingerly at first 'cos you might burn your fingers on the disc if it is overly hot....hot disk means brake pads are dragging.

The belt isn't running against the pulley shoulder and grinding its self to powder?

:agree: You might want to check the belt allignment? I just changed my rear tire and did about 3 seperate adjustments to get it just off the sprocket enough. I have never seen that MUCH dust from my brakes.
