Odyssey Chargers

I have seen this here before but can't find it again for some reason.

Can you use a standard Battery Tender on an Odyssey battery or do you need to use the trickle charger that they sell?

I am usisng a Odyssey charger on a standard battery... I would think the reverse would work as well..

I am sure that our GURU's here will let us both know..

Have a great day as it is POURNING BUCKETS of RAIN with HIGH WIND as I type..

They do have a list of aproved chargers, But i never heard of most on that list:dontknow:?

I wonder too

Here is a link to a list of Odyssey approved chargers.

Very few of those chargers do I recognize and some of them are pushing some serious amperage. I was planning on getting an Odyssey when my OEM battery finally dies. I was just going to hook it to my trusty Deltran Battery Tender, but, now I'm not so sure. I think a lot of Spyderlovers have gone to the Odyssey battery, hopefully some of them will chime in and let us know if buying an Odyssey battery means buying a new charger too.:dontknow:

My odyssey has been installed for 2 weeks and every day it's been connected to a battery tender junior. After each ride I connect it and then check an hour later and the light on the battery tender is green and it is left on until the next ride.

My rides are short d/t the weather. Usually 1/2 hr- 45 mins.

i use the tender from wallmart works fine im alwas on the tender iless im riding.keep them charged and you will have less problums.thats fun lets ride.:2thumbs::D:chat:

I dont see why a different charger would be needed if that was the case you might have to change alternators in vehicles :dontknow:

I had the dealer install an Odyssey Battery when they assembled my RT almost a year ago. I use a Deltran Battery Tender Plus and have had no problems as yet. It is on it right now, but since I ride mine pretty often I don't always hook up the Battery Tender.

I'm far from an expert on batteries but it is my understanding that Deltran Battery Tenders may charge at a voltage that is slightly too high for Gel Cell batteries and might damage them. But the Odyssey battery is an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) rather than a true Gel Cell battery and should have no problem with the Battery Tender voltage level.

I agree, but I also don't want to have any warranty problems with a new battery, and my trusty Deltran Battery Tender is not on the approved list. If other Spyderlovers are using "non-approved" chargers with the Odyssey battery and are not having problems, I'll quit being paranoid. Probably. I'm just glad someone posed the question so there is time to get answers before the purchase. I love this forum.

I'm going to take a look to see if I can contact Deltran and see what the deal is with the odyssey battery and deltran not being listed.

I just e-mailed Deltran. I don't know how long it takes for a response.

The determining factor as far as voltage developed in the charging system of any vehicle would be the voltage regulator rather than the alternator. The Spyder does not have an alternator. It uses a magneto and voltage regulating diodes to charge the battery. Assuming everything is working properly, magneto output voltage is regulated between 13.0 and 14.0 volts.

Conventional wet cell batteries or AGM (Odyssey and others) batteries can be charged at a voltage level up to 15.0 volts without damage. True Gel Cell batteries may be damaged if they are charged at a rate above 14.2 volts. The regulated output of the Spyder magneto is 14.0 volts maximum so Gel batteries will not be damaged. On the other hand, AGM's which are usually used in the Spyder, won't be charged as fast as they would if the voltage was higher.

First, I'm a fan of Battery Tender Jrs. I have three of 'em.

I also have an Odyssey charger for those batteries. Don't have any right now but will again in the future.

I've read somewhere (in the past) that the Odyssey charger will completely charge the Odyssey battery. The Juniors just think they're fully charged.

That's my $0.02. Where's my change? :sour:

Well I just ordered a PC680 battery, so If I need to get a different charger so be it.

It was awfully slow to turn over tonight when I left the restaurant after dinner. It was 41F out. It's time, mine is a 09 that was just bought last Nov, however the batter has a lot of shelf time on it.

When you get the pc680 battery, if you have a problem connecting the positive terminal, let me know and I'll take the panel off my spyder and take a pic. In a previous post I said it took me about a 1/2 hr. to determine how to connect the L terminals together to have the stock positive end connection connect up. You'll see what I mean when you receive the pc680. You'll probably figure it out in 1 minute and it took me 30.

I am a machinist, one of my customers has me make copper busbars. I have copper material that I can make terminal extensions if needed.

Thanks for the offer though!

Here's the response I just got back from Deltran:

Odyssey does not recommend using our chargers on their batteries. I do not know
the reasoning.

I contacted Odyssey and spoke with their tech. person. Here's the criteria for a battery charger to be used with the PC680:

1. minimum 2 amp rating

2. float charge at least 13.5 volts to 13.8 volts- tech said typically chargers don't go over 13.8 and the 13.5 was the most important of the three criteria

3. auto reconditioning setting (if equipped) should not be over 15 volts

I just contacted Deltran and found that the battery tender jr.'s float charge is only 13-13.4 volts. Looks like I need another charger.

 for doing the research on this one.

Well, my Battery Tender Plus has kept my Odyssey PC-680 at full charge on my 2010 RT for a year and before that it kept the 5 year old PC-680 on my BMW in good shape. I even connect it to the double batteries on my Ford Excursion 7.3 liter diesel when they seem a little low. I think I'm gonna keep right on using it no matter what Odyssey says.
