• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Guts and Glory Rally

The way I look at it, I pay $1000 for the entry fee, I get 14 nights accommidations, a kick off party in LA, a concert in Bar Harbor, a digital camera, meet new people and the bragging rights that a Can-Am whipped all those loud A$$ harley. This goes beyond the rider. It also goes to the bragging rights of a manufacture. I think if those of us are serious about riding in this event, we should contact Can Am and talk to them about a sponsorship and maybe some support at checkpoints. Tell them about the bragging rights for their products. Heck if that won't fire them up then maybe we should get a different brand. All in all, the last charity to come on board with the Gut and Glory Rally makes it totally legit to me. Shriners Hospital for Children. Now the Shriners will not sign with just anyone. Just a thought.

:agree: 100% with your comments, but I preferred to remain independent in ryde and opinions (= no disclosure/agrements signed with BRP). JMHO :2thumbs:

I had a good talk with Robert Swope yesterday and he's excited about having some Spyders in the ride. They hope to have every brand represented in this event. They are working with dealers at every location to give a deep discount on repairs and to do the work after hours during our 7 hour rest period. Our bikes/Spyders would be trailered to the shop for repairs and brought back to us.

They are mapping out all the fuel stops along the way. The hope not to have more than 170 miles between stations and if there is they'll let us know. That could be a problem for a RT towing a trailer.

It sounds like they are still working out all the details and I was told that the website should be updated within the next 48 hours with new information.

I haven't put my money down yet but I'm real close. Looks like Ron is going to try and make the run with me along with Fred Rau. We'll be leaving in groups of 100 so we should be able to ride together. :doorag:

While looking over the Guts and Glory site I noticed there is a way to sponsor a rider or possible a group. I would be interested in making a $$ contribution to Docdru/ Lamont or any others how step up and make this superhuman effort. see the site and look at the sponsorship form :chat:

How about Jammers? :dontknow:

Doc... You'll be disqualified at the starting line on the 1st day! If this were a football game there would be flags littering the field! :roflblack:

The rules on this thing are starting to get pretty petty. What's next, no CB radios allowed because you'll learn where the police are and that means you are trying to break the law. :cus: :gaah:

I haven't read through all the rules. But I don't think restricting the use of devices that are illegal in many states anyway is petty.

Besides, the whole idea of the rally is to run at the speed limit. These kinds of devices exist to defeat that purpose.

Not to mention the liabilty issues involved here for the sponsor.

Now there may be some petty rules. But I don't see this as one of them.

I guess this goes back to the standard argument of just because I'm using a radar detector doesn't mean I'm always speeding. They do serve other purposes too. Mine actually saved a trip for me because my speedo went out 100 miles into a 4 day trip. My detector flashes the speed when it's hit by a radar so I turned up the sensitivity and was able to monitor my speed the rest of the trip. There are also only a handful of states where they are illegal and in that case it is the user's responsibility to not use them. I can't imagine going on a road trip without one. Actually I carry a spare just in case. I've been using detectors on bikes since the original Fuzzbuster back in 1978. Never leave home without one! :D
A GPS would be a better tool than a radar as a backup for your speedo.
Are you going on this ride?

I agree about the GPS. After that trip I bought my Zumo 550, but that isn't allowed either hence my reference to petty rules.

No, I was going to wait until next year to see how this one plays out but unless they allow aux fuel cells next year my Spyder would be considered illegal.
A GPS is not illegal unless it is a radar detector or blocker.

Everyone should ride the way they want too. So I'm not giving you trouble over the radar detector. Just giving my opinion that a rule against them in this event is not petty.

And I suppose there are other uses for one of these. But I've got to beleive that the overriding reason to have one is to be able to exceed the speed limit with some security.

At least everyone I know that owns one has decided to use a radar dector instead of running the speed limit to avoid getting tickets.

If you can't leave home without one... then I guess you'll have to look for a rally that allows radar detectors. I've never used one so I'm good on this count at least.

I was going by Doc's quote above but I guess I might have misread. It looks like this rule is then specifically targeted against the new Escort combined GPS/radar detector.

No harm, no foul, just a spirited discussion. Yes I also want to avoid tickets but even when I'm just cruising along in laid back mode I still like to know where they are. :ohyea:

:chat:

I wouldn't mind that myself. And I am a gadget person as well. Just never have gotten into that area.

But how about laying down the RD and going naked to the rally (electronically speaking, of course)! :yikes:

In this case I need to...

If you search Google for "Guts and Glory Ride" this SpyderLovers thread is in the 3-rd position of 77,200 results :D

That's cool that SpyderLovers comes in third. It may climb up higher than that before the actual event starts. :D

Doc, it sounds like you are either going to have to strip Silver Dream down to nothing, or take your RT on this adventure. :dontknow:

If the fuel cell is stock (part of the origanal building process of the motorcycle) it is legall to use in the rally.

If no fueling points sooner than 170 miles, then the spyders are kaputt without carrying additional fuel..

And trust me, Forrest knows for sure about running out of fuel. I'll bet you won't let that happen again aye Forrest?

I can usually go around 190 miles before I absolutely must have fuel. Our last run to Canada I did a 194 mile leg coming home.

My RTS was lucky to get 120 out of a (6 gallon) tank...sometimes less. Nancy's RS will be sucking fumes at 160. Spyders seem to be quite variable in this department. :agree: that 170 is stretching it uncomfortably too far...especially for an RT.
