• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

2010 Photo Scavenger Hunt

I have decided that, in order to make it more fair, for Item 88 (longest word) I will assign each letter the value assigned to it in Scrabble. Then I multiply the number of letters times the value...add the total...and divide by the total number of letters

At this point, we have Roadkill in the lead at 1.8
IF Deb's word had been a sign (as required), she would have had 1.65
IF Biker1 can get to Co. Galway and find it, Muckanaghederdauhaulia would score 1.77
Albuquerque on the other hand would score 2.7

I will then award the top word 100 points; #2 gets 75 points, # gets 50 points, and #4 gets 25 points...no other words will get points

So, everyone has a chance. The "odder" the word, the better chance you have

my opinion

+And what is the opinion regarding rejected windmills then later accepted for others?

And what is the opinion regarding the stated requirement of the bike in the image? I'd imagine those lacking that requirement aren't valid.

Opinions are important upon factual presentation as they'll shape its overall construct, but late-dated changes are not opinions and affect the outcome.

My opinion is that I've participated well along the rules guidelines and don't appreciate them being changed at the last minute.

I'm preparing a fully-linked spreadsheet presentation of my overall Scaverger Hunt Attempt that I will attempt to googlepost. If not, you'll still have access to my full attempt record.

I was in Albuquerque, NM two weeks ago that sucks.

Need help with math also. How did you get 2.7 for Albuquerque? (31 * 11) /11 = 31

Even though I haven''t been participating in this contest, I do agree with Roadkill on the rules being changed at the last minute. If the longest word picture guaranteed a win regardless of other pictures, then I think it is an unfair advantage. In that case, I would remove that category / picture from the contest entirely. Being that (longest word) picture is only worth 100 points and there are many others that are worth that much or more, I don't think that's the case.

I'm not sure how you'd planned on scoring the sign with the longest name, but may I recommend a #88 scoring rule, Irish? (I don't think any of us would be averse.)

Just a suggestion, and for annual variety, perhaps next year you could assign Scrabble tile point values, or something equally unique, causing us to look for things like Quinnipiac College or such...

You're the one who brought up the option of using some sort of formula. Decided to use your suggestion posted on 08-16-2010 at 07:37 PM. Sorry you're upset...so am I

Okay, I've tried hard to make this a fun contest and to be as fair as I can about awarding points. Believe me, it hasn't been easy but I didn't expect it would be.

However, as we reach the end, my patience is wearing thin. I will go back over all of the entries (UGH!) and review their compliance with the item/rules specification. If the item description doesn't specify something specific, that's my bad and I have to use my judgment. If it does, I will go strictly by what is said.

I was hoping to do this again next year too. This was a learning experience having never done this before and I've picked up on a lot of changes/modifications/ that need to be done if it were to be done again.

But, if someone else wants to do it instead, it's YOURS.

#88 point assignments

+Irish, don't lay this crutch on me.

In that post you're quoting, I suggested making #88 more fair by assigning each letter of the longest word sign presented a value divided from 100, thereby providing you with a specific option for this year that would negatively impact no-one, and positively impact everyone other than myself. That's the kind of person I am.

I then provided you with a suggested option FOR THE FUTURE, when I said, "Just a suggestion, and for annual variety, perhaps next year... (It seems you only quoted part of my post.)

... I'm not sure how you'd planned on scoring the sign with the longest name, but may I recommend a #88 scoring rule, Irish? (I don't think any of us would be averse.) Why not assign each letter of the longest word sign presented a value divided from 100?

For example, my Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg (45 characters) divided from a total 100 value would net a 2.2 value per letter. In turn, someone else's presentation of Lake Woebegon (8 characters) would then net a value of 17.6 (2.2 * 8).

Just a suggestion, and for annual variety, perhaps next year you could assign Scrabble tile point values, or something equally unique, causing us to look for things like Quinnipiac College or such...

I'm sorry you didn't understand, and I'm sorry you're frustrated, but my day-long trip to capture lake whatchafukincallit was no walk in the park considering I could've sat in the freakin' driveway and waved a vee sign with my hand for points.

I'd take over the contest next year, and even donate an AMSOIL oil change, but I'll be participating again if it's repeated.

The most important factor of anything like this is that mid-stream rules changes don't negatively impact participants.

Ride on.

You could get some pointers from your buddy SpyderGene. He put on a heck of a poker game at the Cuba, MO. rally. :D :joke: :joke:

You know the old saying about "No good deed...".

Thanks for doing this. Even though I didn't participate (no Spyder), reading and looking at the pics has been fun and educational.
