See the shiny spot in the middle of the filter....almost looks like a split in it when magnified. :dontknow:
I don't think so--- it's a 2-piece unit and that is the 'ridge' where they come together... looks pretty normal to me.

Don't expect too much from Carlo. BRP treated the fires last year with mostly silence. They will acknowledge that you had a fire and that's about it. Carlo told me that they had studied the fires and then closed the book. They never told us what they found. They just sort of skated by this issue and got away with it because there were only eight fires that we know of. There have been two more this year. BRP never saw my bike after the fire. It went straight to the salvage yard. There was no interest in seeing it. The two updates speak louder than words.
Do the canisterectomy. It will remove one of the risk factors.
That dark area between the 'ridge' and shiny spot is what I'm looking at.I don't think so--- it's a 2-piece unit and that is the 'ridge' where they come together... looks pretty normal to me.
Thanks for the advice and I will be sure to let Cowtown know to go ahead and do that while they are working on everything else that needs to be replaced. I say that right now not knowing yet what the insurance will say but the majority of the ryders that were with me (who are way more mechanically inclined than I am) seem to think that it can be salvaged still.
I am not 100% positive as well but again I will repeat myself, I am reporting this issue. While many may not agree with me on waiting a day or two, again it is because I want to give Carlo the courtesy of having a chance to reply to my e-mail before I do. Call it wrong or whatever, it's just the way I am. It's not like BRP is going to hand me keys to a brand new Spyder free of charge, again it's just me extending him a little courtesy.
As for the second update I will be honest, I am sure they were done and I say that because I bought the Spyder used just a month ago. I did have it at Cowtown only days after I got it for an oil pressure switch that had gone bad and I was told they did all the updates at that time. I was told that 5 total updates were done and I trust them enough that when they say they did it, then it was done.
No worries or problem here with you waiting to report it.....
And if Cowtown said they did the updates--- you can take that to the bank.
Not sure if they would do the cansiter-ectomy for you or not.
Keep us posted--- and good luck!
I'm going to let this issue simmer a few days. We may have to have something similar to the Boston Tea party.Thanks. I thought of that as well seeing as how they are a dealer and even if it is not needed here for emissions purposes I guess it still goes against how BRP built the bike and I completely understand if they don't want to do it. Unfortunately I don't have the knowledge to do it myself. Maybe I can do the next best thing and have them do what others have done and that is to add an extension to that hose and run it under the panels away from the main heat source.
Hi Guys, yes BRP WILL get a full report on this from us and MEEEE.....DID I SAY ME??? any ways MoLee is right! and the upgades on this 09 were never done....the head pipes were wraped. I will get some Close up pic's and send them to MoLee to post being I suck at that. Joe is a great GUy who bought a spyder second hand out of warraty from some one who's dealer or they did not get al the new updates done, we are on it and will now go throught this bike top to bottom......kinda have to, to replace the wirring harness now. Any ways will do my best to keep you all updated as we go along. Thanks gang for all the help!:agree:
:cus: the Canister!
Glad I've had mine yanked..... very interested to see the pics of the burnt parts on this Spyder.
Really only two choices of where the fuel for the fire came from---- a line that carries fuel--- or that :cus: Canister.
------------------
Someone mentioned areas of the Spyder hitting 1000 degrees under the hood? Really? That sure seems high.... I was thinking more in the 500 range. What areas are getting that hot?
uhhh sure we can't remove the canisterNo worries or problem here with you waiting to report it.....

Lets keep in mind the first update changed the timing of the purge solinoid causing it to create a lean condition (or so we were told) this caused the engine to run crappy. The second update seemed to program the purge solinoid to open less or at different times therefore making the engine run better. The extension hose was an addition to the update and not widely known about. If a tech was checking on updates he would check BUDS and assume it was done correctly or it could have simply fell off. Thanks Len! While I hate that this has happened again---- It frankly couldn't have happened at a better place. With the other fires we were all left wondering what the deal was---- but not so this time!
I have mixed feelings about finding out this has not had the second update. While it seems more likely we can now point the finger at the second update being the 'cure' to this problem (as many have theorized).... we've never been told directly by BRP that the update was to help this situation.
Have we seen a fire yet to a bike that had the second update done?
I highly recommend anyone worried about this to do the canister-ectomy. Anyone who can't do them --- I'm sure you can find a fellow Spyderlover to help you out. I'll gladly do them for people.
Maybe time for one of our vendors to develop a kit with instructions.
Thanks Joe but, you and mike and Molee were the realfiremen here....not to forget our host marven Frances...... not sure what really happened yet but were are on it and will let everyone know the outcome asap! Firefly has a point I will shoot you as staight as possible so we really know whats actually happing:2thumbs:Joes pictures kind of show the same thing but here is a couple that I took:: Notice Len in action here..
X-Joe
We will be looking at the bike in the morning and letting you all know. BRP is aware and wants to know whats going on so no worries, we will keep all up to date
