• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

collapsed oil filter

I wonder if the collapsed oil filter is the old style or the new style?

JT

Several years ago I remember someone posted photos of a collapsed oil filter.
It was before the new, larger one was released.
At the time the conjecture was, as I recollect, the filter became clogged and the pump simply mangled it.

I had the new style on my Spyder since the 600 mile service...

Its the transmission oil filter that changed. The main filter is the larger one and those have not changed style. BRP did change construction on theirs due to failures.

Sorry, I should have specified I meant the xmission oil filter.
I don't believe BRP ever admitted to any failures, the reported reason was an extended service life.

BRP pulled all the original filters off the shelf in mid to late 2012. You would be hard pressed to find one after that time. It is extremely unlikely that this latest issue was an original filter.

I had an oil change done to the Spyder the day before we left for Spyderfest. Dealer checked oil level when I left the Spyder the day after it happened and everything was okay. The next two weeks should be interesting. BRP has no spare engines. I wonder how many parts for the rebuild will be back ordered? I hope I can survive this no byke period.:dontknow:

Hey Roger, I feel for you bro'.
Maybe JW will give you his engine?:joke:

No spare engines? That is hard to believe. Just pull one off the assembly line. So 1 Spyder build is delayed. Or take a motor out of a demo or floor model.

This is very interesting. If you got the oil change done at Spyderfest I'm sure it was done correctly with new filters. Were the filters genuine BRP? Are they sure it was a filter issue?

Really sorry to hear all of this. I hope BRP gets you back on the road soon.

The "no spare engines" thing sounds like dealer BS to me. Sounds like they want to do the rebuild, either because they will make more doing the repair that way, or because BRP has instructed them to do it that way. In the end it won't matter as long as. The work is done correctly.

common problem

Modern cars Trucks and Motorcycles have a spin on filters, older models have a cartridge filter like the spyder
British cars had a bad reputation for the engines seizing up because of NO OIL caused
by the filter turning to mush and plugging up all the oil galleys.

Holy moly I just searched collapsed oil filter and seized engine, this is not as rare as it should be ????????

Did the dealer inspect the oil filter and tank screen?

They removed the oil filter and drained the oil into a pan. The oil was full of silver powder. The mesh around the filter was crushed on the lower end of the filter. This caused the welds to break from the bottom end. Made a mess of the clutch and cracked the lower end.

Hmmm. Sounds like it could have been a failure elsewhere that overwhelmed the filter with debris and then the filter failed. Sorry for the speculation at your expense. Just saying it may not have been filter collapse first. The failed filter may have been the final blow of an engine that was already grenading from other causes. No filter can stand up to debris overload. It may not collapse but it will not be able to supply sufficient oil flow.

The main thing is to get you back on the road. Hope that happens soon.

Automotive (including motorcycle) lubrication systems have a by-pass valve which is activated if/when the oil filter get blocked, allowing the system to still be pressurised. If collapsed oil filters on Spyder should happen there is something very odd going on in there, but that goes with owning a Spyder.

The biggest wear item in the system is the clutch, its also the most vulnerable to failure and personally would be my first suspect area. I'd make sure they take a really good look as they get everything back together.
Best of luck for sure!
