Not the Corvettes!!!!
EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WTVO) — A powerful tornado that tore through central Illinois has destroyed a nationally known Corvette museum and automotive complex, wiping out decades of history in a matter of minutes.
The storm struck Effingham County on the evening of June 17, 2026, leaving
widespread damage to homes, farms, and businesses. Among the hardest-hit sites was Mid America Motorworks, a major Corvette parts supplier and home to the MY Garage Museum, which featured rare and historic vehicles.
Company officials say the campus took a direct hit from the tornado and suffered catastrophic damage.
Mid America Motorworks
said in a statement its buildings “sustained catastrophic damage after being in the direct path of a tornado,” with large portions of the facility destroyed.
Michael Yager, president and CEO of the company, described the devastation in stark terms.
“You know I told him everything is gone and he said, ‘clarify what you mean is gone,’” Yager said. “And I said, ‘Dad, everything is gone. The buildings are destroyed, the cars are gone, the inventory is gone… we’re essentially going to have to start from new.’”
Museum, rare cars lost
At the center of the destruction is the MY Garage Museum, which housed a collection built over more than 50 years and widely considered a destination for Corvette enthusiasts across the country.
The museum and surrounding campus have been reduced to debris, with officials indicating that the loss is total.
Founder Mike Yager
said in an update that “every building is a total loss,” including the museum, corporate headquarters, warehouses, and even a vintage 1910 gas station on the property.
The storm also appears to have destroyed or severely damaged multiple one-of-a-kind vehicles and historic prototypes.
Among the reported losses are the last C4 Corvette ever built and early C5 prototype cars, which enthusiasts say cannot be replaced.
“This was a museum. This was a place that families came to see cool one-of-a-kind cars,” Elizabeth Yager said. “It’s absolutely devastating. You can’t replace the last C4 Corvette or the Alpha and Beta cars.”
Widespread storm damage
The tornado was part of a severe weather outbreak across the Midwest, with damage reported across multiple counties in Illinois.
In Effingham County alone, officials say at least 30 buildings were destroyed and dozens more damaged.
Emergency management officials reported the tornado traveled roughly 12 to 15 miles, with the most severe damage stretching across rural areas and into parts of Effingham.
Despite the destruction, authorities say there were no fatalities and only a small number of injuries reported.
“Corvette Mecca” erased
Founded in 1974, Mid America Motorworks grew into one of the largest aftermarket parts suppliers for Corvette and Volkswagen enthusiasts in the country.
Beyond its business operations, the Effingham campus became known as a “Corvette Mecca,” hosting events and drawing visitors from across the U.S.
