Wiring for volt meter

Oh I see where you got that. But if you scroll down to the product description, it says that its 2 inches. It actually fit perfecly into the opening.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Pam

I figured it was a mistake. Just thought you should double check.

I think you have that wrong Bob.

The 2013 temp gauge has 4 wires like you said but are not as you describe.
Two 12V switched from the same source junction in the harness. Both are the same color. Orange with a red tracer.
One wire from the cluster.
One common ground.

I would assume that one of the 12V line was dropped. Since they are both the same anyway. It still can be used for a volt meter.

My 2011 the stab on for the light bulb is not the same color. It is red not orange. Yes the other wire is orange with a red line. So obviously there were changes over the years.

Not to disagree with finless, but I have used the dash wires on my last 4 Spyders for a voltmeter with no problems to date.

cruzr joe

Cruzr Joe, I know you did but I also read about someone hooking up a gauge and blew the cluster. It was a 2015. It was not the same gauge as many of us are using. So all I am saying is be careful.

Finally let me just state something. That is true battery voltage vs the switch 12V coming out of the regulator.
Your volt meter will read lower if you tap onto the gauge wires and thus not the true battery voltage. Fully charged battery on the gauge wires reads about 12.4. At the battery it's almost 13V. At least it does on my 2011. So if you want your true battery voltage, run the lines to the battery with a fuse. A

Bob,

Do you have instructions on how to run that line direct to the battery with a fuse? Or is there a wire somewhere that I can easily tap into?

Thanks

The battery in yours is in the frunk so running a wire down to it shouldn't be too hard.

Well it is that easy but since you now wont have a switched 12V the gauge will be on all the time.

So when I say run it to the battery, I would look for a switched 12V that is before the regulator.
I could find this on my 2011 with the service manual but later models with the battery in front I cannot help.

Pam, I think you bought the same gauge as Cruzr Joe and I have. For you I would say go ahead and hook it to the orange wire for the gauge.

Thanks to some sage advice from one of the SpyderLovers, I have solved how to do it. I am plugging in a "Add a Circuit" on one of the switched fuse locations (r6) , then running a red wire from that added fuse up to the voltmeter. I will also run a black wire from somewhere on the frame of the Spyder to use as the ground.

I also ordered a nice digital volt meter on Amazon. I didn't really care for the look of the one I got.

I'm sorry but that is just an awful idea. How the heck are you going to keep the water out of the fuse box afterwards. Don't ask for trouble. Just use the orange and black wires from the gauge plug.

I'm curious how this will cause water to go into the fuse box. I'm not arguing, I respect your advice BillyBovine. I'm just wondering what you mean by that.

Both fuse boxes are located behind the front trunk. Fully exposed to whatever mother nature and your garden hose can do to them. BRP issued a TSB for 2013's for new fuse box covers to try and keep the water out. Same design in later models like yours. So don't start poking a hole in them to get a wire out.

Oh I wasn't planning to poke a whole in the cover. I was planning to run the wire through the existing opening behind the fuse box that leads to under the tupperware.

Yeah I can see your concern with the idea of punching a hole in that cover.:yikes:

OK I'll try the Orange. I became concerned when someone told me that he fried his cluster and had to get it replaced.

Thanks BillyBovine

I agree, sometime we make more problems for ourselves than we prevent.

hi
can you post how your project worked and pictures would be great.
i'd like to do the same mod.

I did it!

Thank you everyone for your input. Especially Finless Bob, Cruzr Joe, and BillyBovine. After busting my noodle trying to figure out how to do it the hard way, I got the Voltmeter working by tapping into the orange and black wire just like you guys said to do. It works! :dg1:
