Why does the BRP Oil Change Kit have 5.5 quarts of oil?

I haven't done the break-in service yet on my 2024 F3-S. In preparation, I purchased an oil change kit from my dealer. Included were all of the O-rings, the drain plug gaskets, the oil filter, 5.5 quarts XPS Full Synthetic 5w-40. A very convenient package.

My question is why do they have 5.5 qts? The 1/2 quart is even in a tiny 16oz. bottle. My owners manual and the shop manual calls for only a 5 quart change with a filter replacement. What gives with the extra bottle? It says for 1330 Rotax. Does another model/year require more than 5 quarts?

When draining from the 2 plugs, if OEM draining plugs, 1 is 41 or 45mm torx, 1 is 6mm hex. Then you fill with 5 qts; and use the check procedure in the book for checking the oil level. Then, if necessary, add any more oil needed from the small bottle. I'm surprised they just didn't add a full qt as extra, for being able to just use a small amount.

If one removes the crankcase plug, the left one requiring a T45 Torx bit; and the clutch cover, aka transmission plug, the right one requiring a 6mm Allen or hex bit, not a socket; and then lets all the oil drain into waste pan(s); reinstalls both plugs; pours five (5) quarts into the engine; starts it and lets it run until the cooling fans cycle on and off twice; turns off the engine; and then within two (2) minutes, checks the oil level, it will read right at the Min level on the dipstick. If one so desires, one can add the remaining oil from the half (0.5) qt bottle, the engine will have adequate oil to go 9,300 miles or one (1) year, whichever comes first. BRP, in its infinite wisdom, knows the company will sell Spyders to owners who think they are intrinsically smarter than the Rotax engineers who designed the 1330 ACE engine, and can therefore pour in another full quart instead of the 1/2 qt bottle and there will be no problem, when they will in fact be overfilling the engine, and some of these individuals will complain on some Spyder owners forum that their problem is BRP’s fault. Remember, MURPHY WAS AN OPTIMIST!

When you change the HCM filter at 28,000 miles on SE6 machines when you do a oil change, my book says to refill it with 5.2 Qts.

Great, that is exactly the answer I was looking for. Being that I only have 1000 miles on the F3, it will be a while before I can use that .2 of a quart.

As a suggestion, why not take the opportunity to switch-out the OEM socket drain plugs with aftermarket hex-drive plugs? They are not expensive, readily available (Lamonster Garage, Baja Ron, Value Accessories, etc.) & might save you some grief in the future.
