Which tires rear tire is best?

I'm not sure what tire to go with at this point. I don't really ride much in the rain but I'm sure these wear down pretty quick as well. Given what others are paying for service, $200 for a rear tire is not terrible. That's assuming we can get more than 8K miles between replacements.

I'm leaning towards the Toyo as I do not want to be the first to try a new tire. The difference between 20 and 30Lbs of pressure in the stock tire makes a huge difference in ride so I'm still leary of a tire with stiffer sidewall.

I'm used to off-road so a little skidding along is all good!

I've broken loose at speed in the rain on the Spyder. I've done my share of off road riding and breaking loose (with control) is the name of the game off road.

The key here is "With Control". Breaking loose in the rain with the Spyder is, at best, on the edge. I would not recommend it.

If you are much out of shape when the Spyder hooks up again you're going to get launched.

Losing traction in the rain is not the same thing as drifting.

We are definitely getting off topic here but riding on the road is certainly not near the "edge". I'm used to sliding sideways on a rut filled trail at 50MPH with trees on either side. So, I would say the rear tire breaking free on a smooth surface on a machine that has a very low center of gravity is far from difficult to handle.

Have slid the spyder many times on wet roads and the nanny helps you out to the point where it is almost boring. I am waiting for the sport version with no nanny but until then I do love the Spyder as it is the closest thing to a road legal quad you can buy today!

Make sure none of the tires slide while your on the dragon as that would be considered "out of control".

Anyways, on a more serious note. Who is installing the aftermarket rear tires? I called 2 dealers and neither was willing to install anything other than the BRP recommended tires for fear of lawsuit. Anyone else run into this?

Nope, our dealer looked at the Kumho and thought it would work very well on the Spyder. He mounted, balanced and installed the Kumho's on our Spyders.

The problem you'll run into is that our size, 225/50/15, is not common. I have not found a Cooper tire that will work on our Spyder.

It is very fortunate that Kumho and Toyo make pretty good tires in the size we need.

A better route would have been for BRP to go to a 16" rim and a 40 series tire. Ride would suffer a bit but tire selection and performance would be better. Then again, it may not have been BRP's intention to give us more tire options.

Let us know if your dealer can get you a Cooper tire in our size.

Since the Spyder is registered as a motorcycle in most states, I am wondering if motorcycles must have motorcycle tires to be "legal". The Kendra tires are designated as motorcycle tires. This might influence BRP's thinking, but not mine. I run a BFGoodrich gForce Sport.

Food for thought... some cruiser folks have been putting on car tires (rear) for quite a while. It's called "going to the dark side". :D

In my opinion, it would be totally inappropriate to put an automotive tire on a two wheel motorcycle. The tire would interfere with cornering (think Boss Hoss). An automotive tire on a three wheel motorcycle is a much different proposition. All trike conversions have automotive tires on the rear. The reason they don't have automotive tires on the front is because of the difficulty of matching the tire to the motorcycle. If you really wanted to do it, you probably could.

When we went on our trip to the black hills. I met a guy with a Honda 1800 v twin with a car tire on the rear. Said it handled just fine on curves. But I've got my doubts about that. Not for me.

Morning all, Based on the positive review of the TOYO tire from fellow spyder lovers, I placed my order. However... I just recieve the following response.

Hi Justin,

The tires that you ordered from Treadepot have been discontinued. Is there something else I can offer you?

Anyone else hear this? Wonder if its the distributor or the manufacturer discontinuing this model. Anyways, I am open to other reviews from other models of car tires for out spyders. If you have had a positive experience, let me know what your running.

Thanks
JJ

Uh, there are tons of tires that are 225/50/15, just look at Tire Rack, etc..

I personally switched to a MT 3751R Drag Radial. It wont be the longest lasting tire... but it will give me the traction I need with its soft thread compound. Plus since I have wheel adapters for the 18" car wheels on the front.. I now have "car tires" all the way around. Handles MUCH better. :ohyea:

I would try a different vender. I just bought one late last fall. I could have got it from several dealers; but hunted down the cheapest I could find on the old p.c.. if I remember right $55 or $56 with free delivery.

I know that Tire Kingdom, and their affiliated stores, stopped carrying the Toyo brand, but I don't have any data as to why they did so.
