Where Did My Oil Go?

HI ever one. I did my 600 mile service and at about 800 miles I had to add some oil, it was about a 1/4 up on the stick. This past weekend at 1500 miles I checked the oil and it was not even on the stick! had to add 3/4 of a quart. No leaks, not smoking. called the dealer and all I got over the phone was "You prob. did not fill it completely when you changed the oil". BULL #$%^... and yes it was hot when I checked it both times. any one else using oil? or do these take loner to break in than any other bike? Thanks.

Make sure you follow the instructions EXACTLY as they are written in the manual. The spyder WILL show low oil if you wait very long after shutting it down. The oil is draining back into the " sump" tank. I know, its a crappy way to have to check the oil. A longer dipstick, with the proper level marks would be a great addition to the 2012 line-up. BRP, are ya reading this?????

If it's not in your air box, and it wasn't smoking, I kind of agree with your dealer.:dontknow:

Dealer's full of it. When the dealer changed my oil, they used a synth/blend, and my RT used a quart every 1500 miles. My last change converted to Mobile 1/MC, & I haven't used a drop in 2000 miles…..

Do not know if theirs any oil in the air box, all most rather take a butt whooping than take it apart that far...lol. I may go ahead and at my next oil change, not to use BRP oil but change to mobile mc 10w40 full synth. oil.

From what I've read on these forums, a good number of us need to replenish the oil a time or two between changes, although yours does seem excessive to me.

I topped mine off before leaving on a weeks trip recently but during and after getting home (2300 miles total) had to add a bit; prob about a half pint each time. Right now its down again about half way on the stick. Waiting to hear from Blackstone Lab where I sent a sample to be analized. I'm using Amsoil MC. 10-40.

You said you have no leaks? When you changed the oil did you change the crush washer? Just got back taking a buds bike to the dealer as they did not replace the cush washer and it leaked a gt out some where in a week. these has plastic along the bottoms and the oil may be collecting up on top and you arnt seeing it. Just a thought

My 2010 RT burns oil about 1 qt every 2500 to 3000 miles. I use Amsoil now but it also burned oil using BRP synthetic blend.

One quart in 3000 miles is acceptable and they all use some oil. Bonus is that it has a dry sump so the resivoir is may be low but the engine is full. The engine holds about 1 1/2 quarts all the time and the reserve is about 2 1/2 quarts. Hope this makes you feel better.

Same on my RS

I use about the same amount of oil on my RS. Not sure where it goes either, not leaking or smokin' but about a quart between oil changes. I don't mind adding oil, but wish I had of known that it might be needed. before letting it get so low before I started to recognize the fact. Nice to have a sump system so the engine stays lubricated. SE5 doesn't behave as nicely without a topped up oil resevoir.

Thanks every one. Looks like all use a little oil. I'm just not use to having anything new and have to worry about oil level... I have 2 4-wheelers and they get ridden very hard and never had to add a drop. My Yamaha Raider has dry sump, never a drop added. My truck never added any... anyway I will have to keep an eye on it, carry a gt. around with me.

I agree with you. This is the first unit I have owned that I have added oil to. If I wasn't having so much fun driving my Spyder I would get rid of it!

I also use oil and have none of the typical signs, no oil on the garage floor, no smoking but it's going somewhere. I don't go for a ryde longer than 10 miles without checking the oil, for long trips I bought a "plastic ketchup bottle, the kind you find in old resturants with a cap from wally world about a buck" put it in the frunk, no fuss, it's clear so you know exactly how much you are putting in. Also it make putting it in much easier because it has a spout built in. I put mine in a zip lock bag for double security. I just got into the habit of checking it after every ryde, put it away ready for the next ryde.

What has been reported in past posts, at least with the RS, is that at lot of owners reported their machines burning off some oil through blow by until the level settles in at around a quarter to the half mark. Also the procedure in the manual for checking is critical and some of use do not warm up the transmission by just letting it idle. I found you have to take it out for a short run to fully expand everything to get a consistent reading.
