Wheel Balance

I have an interesting wheel balance question. Bought the Spyder 11/09 and after about 2,000 miles developed a shake in the handle bars at around 65 mph. Figuring I threw a weight I brought it to the dealer. The wheels were balanced, but when they test drove it still felt the shake. Process of elimination led to a new tire. Everything was fine until last week when I installed the mud flap lights which required removing the tires. Put the tires back on the same side, and now have a shake at 65 mph! Pulled the tires off and rotated them 1 lug, test drove and the shake is reduced but still there. How can that be?

Go one more lug, Rule of thumb go back to the last thing you did to it.

balance

i had the same problem, the dealer said the hub was off they roted the wheel on the hub checked the run out and said (it is in specks now) I still have a slight vibration at 70 but is much better now. this spring I will go back and check again. hope this helps. Joe

I believe the tire pattern is directional and shouldn't be rotated. If you want to switch them, they need to be taken off the rim and remounted.

yup . . . .

Yes, the stock tires are directional. Yes, you can pick up mild vibration at the speeds you mention. Somehow, probably an ataDude moment, I switched the front tires when I got them balanced - sad thing was, I was really paying attention to getting them back on the right sides. I could not believe I had put them on the wrong sides.:opps:

So, check, just to make sure. If all is well with the rotation, you my find a product like Ride On will 'balance' them out.

Tires were put on the same side, rotation is forward. Shouldn't go from silky smooth to shakey just cause I pulled a tire off and put it back on so took it to the dealer. They said I didn't have enough torque on the lugs (77 ft.lbs) and they drove it and now is vibration free. I wish, vibrating again at 65 mph on the way home. Took off the right wheel and rotated it one more lug, put back on with torque wrench and drove 5 miles up the expressway (vibrating) and then back (no vibration). Weird. Guess I'll rotate the right tire one more lug to see what happens and then start with the left.

I don't know, sounds like you got something else going on. Have you checked your hubs and wheel bearings? Rotating it on the hub shouldn't make a bit of difference. I would make sure the hub and wheel are free from any humps or bumps too.

I agree. The "shake one direction and not the other" thing sounds like worn suspension parts. Did the dealer check the shock and suspension bushings and ball joints? Several Spyders have experienced failed shock bushings.

Everything was OK until you took the wheel off, Are you sure the fender or mud flap are tight. I don't see how the bearing/ suspension can go bad
just by taking a wheel off .

It might just be coincidence. A balance or "out-of-round" problem is usually constant, changing only with speed. An alignment problem will change with road conditions. If the original problem was an alignment issue, like bad tie rod ends, a new tire casn make it disappear for a while, then return when the tire gets worn in a ways.

Before I take it back to the dealer, I thought I'd try rotating the tires one lug nut at time just to see what would happen. First I rotated the right tire until I found the smoothest position, then started with the left. Last test ride seemed pretty smooth, but only had a chance to go a couple of miles at speed. Even if this works, there must be some underlying problem. This bike has only 2,000 miles on it and they have already replaced the right tire last month to solve the same problem, an intermittent shimmy of the handlebars which gradually became constant at 65 mhp. That it is happening again would tell me there is something else, but that it started exactly right after I pulled the wheels off ... the timing make is questionable.
